Is the floral dress and white trainers look out?

garricces · 30/03/2025 20:21

So it’s been really nice as we all know. My go to for work is the floral dress and white trainers and I was told by my younger colleague this look is “out”

I know it doesn’t matter as long as you like what you wear, but I’m also conscious of not looking stylish but keeping my look “fresh”

its not an age thing. It’s a fashion thing. No one has to follow trends but some people enjoy looking on trend. Others don’t mind looking dated.

‘Others don’t mind looking dated’ Miaow!

Others don’t want to look like fashion victims, slavishly following the next ridiculous ‘trend’.

FrozzyBrain · 30/03/2025 22:57

So can anyone tell me what kind of bags are ‘in’?

@latetothefisting Fair point.

Is there a slightly refreshed or updated version of this look?
I remember following a lady on TikTok who would take classic ‘millennial fits’ and just tweak a few details so the concept was the same but the outfit looked a bit more up-to-date.

Who really cares what some anon 'lady' on tiktok thinks?

My 16 year old Grandson told me recently that you can wear whatever you want to do these days.
So I’d go for it if I was you.

Exactly. It's not going to affect anyone else in the slightest so wear whatever you like 😊

babyproblems · 30/03/2025 22:58

I’m sorry but it is out. It’s very dated now I think!! If you own a denim jacket with this look I’m afraid that is the ultimate over now 😬 Could you wear some ballerinas or mesh ballerinas instead of the trainers? Floral dress is still fine imo especially if it’s long and a bit of a statement! X

I’m glad women have been ‘brainwashed’ as it means I can wear trainers with everything and minimise the pain in my foot without looking out of place!

And no, I don’t have disgusting, sweaty, smelly feet

Why do you need wearing trainers to be fashionable in order for you to wear them?

You are perfectly entitled to wear trainers if they help your feet and you actually enjoy wearing them. You don't need every other women in the street to wear them as well.

I just find it ridiculous that people behave like sheep when it comes to clothes.
These wide trousers are another case in point. They do suit a small percentage of women - generally the tall and slim . But you see droves of women wearing them because they are the current fashion who they just do not flatter one little bit . What is wrong with chosing clothes that actually suit the individual?

Why do so.many women feel the need to try to look like everyone else?

Who cares what's in fashion! Wear what you like! I've got zero fucks to give! Says someone for the millionth time.

Exactly this! Great for you not giving a fuck but why clog up the thread of someone who does give a fuck about trends and is asking advice?

Do you remember her name? That sounds quite fun!

I’ve just looked her up her tiktok is @ beingjulia and there’s a playlist on there ‘updating millennial fits’

Me too!!

I will buy the odd fashionable thing, but wear it my way. I am tall, but curvy, with wide shoulders. I can do marilyn Monroe and Katherine Hepburn. Which is pretty much my go to. The teenagers I teach love that my outfits are just edging towards the unconventional.

I was wearing trainers and dresses (nighties or stripy Jersey dresses) in the 90s. I've got great legs, so i wear them with short dresses - not to work though. It's adidas shell toe all the way for me though. Flirted with converse, but adidas win the casual stakes.

I have a teen dd who does leggings and socks over them. I do not wish to dress like a 14 yr old, so I'm sticking to hidden socks.

Shetlands · 30/03/2025 23:01

71 year old here. I've always been reasonably fashionable and I love clothes. I enjoy people watching and silently commenting on what people are wearing. I've observed the floral dress/white trainer combo (it's not my personal style) and seen it done well and also badly eg made someone look frumpy. Isn't it always more important how you wear a style to suit your body shape/colouring rather than what you wear?

I seem to have come full circle and I'm starting to collect pieces (from Vinted mainly) that appealed to me when I was a teenager/early 20s. Back then, I used to go to jumble sales and pick up vintage clothes (Edwardian, 20, 30s, 40s) and I'm now doing it again (repro pieces mainly now). The other day I went out to lunch wearing a 1930s style floral dress (bias cut) with an Edwardian jacket (nipped in waist) and some repro 1940s suede shoes.

So back to the denim jacket/floral dress/white trainers combo, if you really love it but want to stay fashionable, could you swap the trainers or the jacket for something else you love wearing? Maybe something you loved as a teen/early 20s? That way you'll keep the style you like while also being a bit individual. Have fun with your clothes anyway.

TheFairyCaravan · 30/03/2025 23:01

I shall be wearing my Summer dresses, some of them floral with my trainers. I’ve got Vejas, dark green Sambas, pastel coloured Gazelles, and DH has just bought me some Liberty London Sambas which I love. I appreciate they’re not for everyone, but they’re for me and they’ll be on my feet with some plain skirts, dresses, trousers and jeans.

Summer clothes hardly ever get worn, ime, so I’m absolutely not throwing things out just because they might not be at the height of fashion anymore.

EverythingIsComputer · 30/03/2025 23:03

Saw someone in this outfit today what with it being fairly warm and thought it just looked so tired. Was boring last year but seeing it again today made me roll my eyes.

By all means wear what you’re comfy in but vary it a little, so dull seeing groups of women in this uniform, really lacks imagination especially when it’s the cross body bag and denim jacket too. Yawn.

TheMoth · 30/03/2025 23:05

I've never really consciously followed fashion either. I guess as a teen I was anti-fashion, which kind of followed me into adulthood. I have friends who wear six because it's in fashion, with no thought to whether it suits them or not. You wouldn't be able to describe my look as fashionable, but you would look twice. I guess I still dress to stand out. Unless it's the weekend, when I'm in a giant hoody or army shirt and turned up skinny jeans.

Men’s fashions change much, much more slowly and most men get away with much narrower wardrobes than women, or certainly the men I know.

It must be the men you know

But a cross body bag is the perfect bag.
Spreads the weight.
Thick strap doesn't hurt.
Pickpocket proof.

Denim jacket:
Can layer it- so perfect for all weather
Pockets. Deep pockets.
Not as scruffy as a hoodie.
Warmer than a blazer.
Doesn't get dirty.

Wide legged trousers haven't made it up here (they never do, it's too wet and windy) but I've seen far too many hungry bum leggings, lately.

Who really cares what some anon 'lady' on tiktok thinks?

Apart from those very few on the very leading edge of fashion, we all get our inspiration somewhere. I doubt you invented the rock chick look yourself. If we see someone we relate to online and think looks good, and we get some ideas, what on earth is wrong with that?

It’s just a bit of fun

Tbf I’m not always a fan of the updates, I feel like millennial style often involves clothes that are more fitted and structured which I find more flattering. Eg she’ll swap a fitted biker jacket for something more oversize.

chakrakkhan · 30/03/2025 23:09

I’ve been wearing white trainers and dresses since I was a teenager, so for about 20+ years. I don’t care if it’s in or out. I wear what I like and feels comfortable. If it’s in the shops it’s ‘in’ for someone anyway!

I don’t disagree, I have these items too but I don’t wear them all together as it looks so formulaic

AelinAG · 30/03/2025 23:10

Skinny jeans are back in - Alix Earle just dropped a collab of skinnies with Frame so that says it all (immediately bought then)

gerimander · 30/03/2025 23:10

I couldn’t tell you what’s in or out. I have no idea. I’ve been wearing trainers and dresses for years and will continue to do so because it’s a look I like. I don’t care if it’s dated. I wear skinny jeans for the same reason. Some things don’t really go out of fashion anyway.
