Is the floral dress and white trainers look out?

garricces · 30/03/2025 20:21

So it’s been really nice as we all know. My go to for work is the floral dress and white trainers and I was told by my younger colleague this look is “out”

I know it doesn’t matter as long as you like what you wear, but I’m also conscious of not looking stylish but keeping my look “fresh”

I live in NZ and find trainers far too hot to wear in summer. I wear them only to go for a long walk, otherwise it's sandals. Little holes or not they are not comfortable on hot days, and once you add a layer of socks - no way!

That is not really a UK issue though. Certainly not here in Scotland!

its not an age thing. It’s a fashion thing. No one has to follow trends but some people enjoy looking on trend. Others don’t mind looking dated.

Can we stop with the “dated”. Especially about a dress and trainers combo for fucks sake.

Well yes they are mostly millennials but I live in an area with lots of young parents and so some of the other mothers at these places are clearly only in their early-mid 20s. I was looking to these women as much more on trend than older me, haha.

Veja trainers have been out for around 4 years in London.

Sorry I'm not trying to be rude.

I'd say white trainers are out however there are exceptions like Reebok C85's.

Clogs are in for women, in a big way.

Vargas · 30/03/2025 23:18

What I find funny is that people on this thread say they don’t care about trends but still wear a trend from a few years ago - floral dress and white trainers. Nobody was wearing that combo ten years ago! So you do care about trends, just not in a super up-to-date fashion sense…

Noroomfor · 30/03/2025 21:28

Well I actually do own a couple of pairs of trainers- coloured ones- which I wear with trousers because I've never thought trainers looked anything other than crass with dresses and skirts. And my feet get warm and uncomfortable in trainers in summer.
So I'm afraid my experience is different from yours.

Alrighty then, but you said "surely" and I'm saying don't call me Shirley. As it's not sure at all.

Oh and actually you said "must" as well! So now who is applying their own stinky feet experience to everyone?

Treesandsheepeverywhere · 30/03/2025 23:19

I've seen people wear bell bottom jeans, flared 70's corduroy, denim skirts and all sorts of other looks.
Looks good as they're individual and comfortable in their choices.

I'm another who'll carry on with the white trainers as I wore them before they were a trend, so won't stop now.
No floral though, more patterned dresses/skirts.

Right! Some followed the trend so hard it's literally all they have left in their summer wardrobe... yet now the trend has moved on they're scoffing at people who moved with it.

It's about tweaking things, so a chore jacket, a denim shacket rather than a jacket, or even a denim blouse over a dress to make it look current.

Instead of a white trainer, a white flat pointed soft leather or glove pump, even something mesh. Otherwise, if you want to wear trainers, opt for something in a colour.

Or, you could give zero fucks and wear what you like and what looks good (on you). If you like a floral dress, white trainers and denim jacket, wear it. Life is short. Having spent the last 18 months dealing with cancer, if I feel like wearing a denim jacket, floral dress and white trainers, I will.

However, one thing I won't wear is that fucking awful Uniqlo bag or any of its variants. I have some standards 😂

🤷🏻‍♀️

Hwi · 30/03/2025 23:36

Since when is it appropriate for a younger colleague to open their gob and opine? Seriously?

CoastalCalm · 30/03/2025 23:38

My mum is in her 70’s and loves the look 🤣

I feel like white trainers are so practical though- trainers mean comfy for walking everywhere, white means go with everything.

I’ve noticed pumps and ballet flats creeping back in, I used to wear them loads as a 2000s teen, paired with skinny jeans or a denim mini skirt/black leggings combo 🤣 They were dreadful to walk in for too long, flat flimsy soles!

ProfessionalPirate · 30/03/2025 23:47

Noroomfor · 30/03/2025 20:40

Well thank goodness if we are seeing the back of white trainers at least!

I'm sick of the sight of trainers.

They are OK in their place and I understand they are comfortable but I don't understand how women were brainwashed into thinking they actually look good with dresses. Give me a pair of Roman sandals or chunky sandals with a dress any day.

I just can't get away from thinking wearing trainers in summer must result in disgusting smelly, sweaty feet.

Firstly, I’m not sure why roman/chunky sandals look so much better than trainers with a dress? 😬
Secondly, trainers are worn with socks of some kind so no need for sweaty feet.
Thirdly, it’s hardly ever warm enough in the UK to wear sandals, so if you only ever wear dresses with sandals you are basically restricting your dress-wearing to a handful of days a year. Which seems a shame imo.

apparently (according to a thread on here) long straight hair was out. But every girl i see (teenage) round here, has long straight hair..... and the new pantene advert, they all have straight long hair.

Just wear what you want, following the latest fashion is for the vacuous brain dead

Such an original observation.....

QuirkInTheMatrix · 30/03/2025 23:49

Clogs are in? Like the Birkenstock Boston? I’m going to pull my 20 year old floral Birkenstock clogs out the wardrobe and get them resoled for summer I think.

Odras · 30/03/2025 23:59

LadyBracknellsHandbagg · 30/03/2025 22:55

‘Others don’t mind looking dated’ Miaow!

Others don’t want to look like fashion victims, slavishly following the next ridiculous ‘trend’.

Wearing the floral dress/crossover bag/white trainers look from a couple of years ago is a completely different thing to have your own sense of style and not following trends at all.

The first looks out of date, the second looks great if you are good at styling.

monktasmic · 31/03/2025 00:00

I have multiple pairs of trainers - still wearing white flat form Nikes / adidas / Veja’s for work. I bought some multicoloured gazelles recently but am still wearing my nike dunks too when not at work. I mainly wear Birkenstocks over the summer as I have since the 1990’s

suburberphobe · 31/03/2025 00:06

^Wear whatever you like.
Personally, I don’t give a toss about “in” or “out”. There are no rules, just what some nauseating influencers or whatever decide will make them more money.
You do you.^

@CollaterlieSistersSister Totally agree with you.

She's not wrong though.

EdithBond · 31/03/2025 00:25

There’s no such thing as ‘in’ or ‘out’. Rock your own look.

Some form of floral is always en vogue every Spring/Summer. It’s the cut of the dress and type of floral that changes. There are endless possibilities.

As for footwear, always go for comfort. Trainers, platform sliders/sandals, flats, clogs, crocs etc. You can wear socks with any until it gets really warm.

Sorry but hope it's out! Never liked that look and if it's not in fashion anymore, then hopefully shops will start selling something else. Past several years haven't found anything but awful floral dresses from shops!

ForZanyAquaViewer · 30/03/2025 22:10

Why do people ALWAYS feel the need to come on threads like this and come out with this ‘wear what you want’ and ‘you can do what you like’ tosh? It’s so painfully predictable and dull, dull, dull.

We know. Everyone knows. OP knows. She even explicitly said I know it doesn’t matter as long as you like what you wear, but I’m also conscious of not looking stylish but keeping my look “fresh”

You are not contributing anything new or interesting to the conversation by declaring yourself an individual who doesn’t follow trends. That’s nice for you. Some people are interested in trends. This OP is one of them.

Who really cares what some anon 'lady' on tiktok thinks?

Well who really cares what some anon 'lady' on MN (i.e. you, me or anyone else on this board) thinks, if you're going down that route?

garlictwist · 31/03/2025 02:07

I think it’s always been a middle aged look but there’s nothing wrong with that. If you like it, wear it!

Deargodletitgo · 31/03/2025 05:17

I'm 50, I wear colourful trainers, got a red pair and a dark lilac pair. Floral dresses have gone from my wardrobe, but more because they weren't really my style as I prefer more geometric patterns.
