He didn’t go to Tesco?

I’ve been ill with the flu for the past few days and am in the worst of it, asked DH if he could pop to the shops and get some dinner in, and food for dc over the weekend, as we have nothing in and I thought he would stop at Tesco on his way home from work.

He decided to go to our village newsagents which sells no fresh food and spent 50 FUCKING QUID on crap. He got unbranded frozen ready meals which no one in our house would touch with a barge pole. The rest went on crisps / chocolate / ice cream / pot noodles. He didn’t even get bread (which they actually sell). Because i’ve not been happy about this he’s now gone in a mood and said he’s not bothering again. AIBU to be psised off he didn’t go to tesco and get real food the kids actually eat and not just chocolate and crisps. And now he’s moaning saying he didn’t know he wasn’t ‘allowed’ to go to the village shop and that i should have told him. I shouldn’t fucking have to tell people to use their brain.

Oh stop! The poor bloke went to the shop and got what he thought would be ok, he tried. The kids won't starve and you haven't had to go shopping. I don't see the problem.

This is why men get away with being pathetic

MissMoneyFairy · 07/03/2025 20:35

Can you do Tesco whoosh or delivery, he's obviously not used to shopping for the family

I was going to say, has he ever done a proper food shop before? Did he write a shopping list? If no to both then he would struggle I imagine. I do every single one of our weekly family food shops. My husband has done it once or twice and found it very stressful not knowing where anything is etc as he’s just not used to it (giving your DH the benefit of the doubt here…although he definitely should have common sense to go to a supermarket for a big shop!)

Chromaover · 07/03/2025 20:39

'He did what you asked.'
'He tried.'
'Its only for a couple of days.'

Christ how low are your bars?!

It's pathetic op. I'd be furious too. Prick.

Being single and muddling through on your own when you're sick (and hopefully being able to call on a friend) is better than this shit.

ForestFox44 · 07/03/2025 20:40

I'd be pissed off too... and for those saying you should have done an online shop. Why should you have to when you are ill? And have a husband who can help. He basically just couldn't be arsed and yanbu to be annoyed!

mcmooberry · 07/03/2025 20:41

I would be livid too, lesser versions of this happen in our house from time to time. I can't stand wasting money, mine or anyone else's and would insist he ate all those crappy ready meals.

Had your husband never eaten before he met you?

GermanBite · 07/03/2025 20:41

So many of these replies are infuriating and depressing in equal measure.

A grown man should be capable of doing a food shop for his family. I can't believe this needs to be said.

Waterbaby41 · 07/03/2025 20:42

Should have told him where you wanted him to go shopping, he's not a mind reader FFS.

ForgettingMeNot · 07/03/2025 20:42

Let him eat the ready meals and get yourself/kids takeaways 😆

pimplebum · 07/03/2025 20:29

Bit precious that your kids only eat branded food , have they eaten it ?

Crisps and chocolate on a Friday night sounds great !

hooe you feel better soon

Have you ever eaten corner shop unbranded ready meals? They are certainly not Sainsbury’s. They barely resemble actual food.

Well, of course. But meal planned and done a family food shop - no, considering he didn’t have a family before he met me…

So what has he made for dinner tonight for you all from his collection of items?
Please don't tell us you saved the day for him.

Ryeman · 07/03/2025 20:46

YABU to be married to such a moron who had to be asked to go to the shop when you are in bed with flu

Presumably he has his head out of his arse often enough to notice what the family normally eat and which shop it comes from?

purpleparroty · 07/03/2025 20:46

By not being branded, I mean it’s by a company that I’ve never even heard of, god knows where the shops got it from. I wouldn’t be bothered if he got Tesco value crap.

Edited

Kids had crisps for dinner and sweets & chocolate for pudding. Can’t afford to shell out for a takeaway after he’s thrown £50 up the wall.

Why are these men so bloody useless? Do they really need to be instructed to get staples like bread, eggs, veggies, fruit, meat ( if you eat it?
Who hears food and gets chocolate and icecream?
I would be furious too.

Andsoitbeganagain · 07/03/2025 20:48

It's a trap designed to make sure next time you need him to do something like this, you'll remember how completely inadequate he was, and you won't ask.

Lentilweaver · 07/03/2025 20:50

Weaponised incompetence.

purpleparroty · 07/03/2025 20:50

Can’t do Tesco whoosh as we live in a village, we have a food shop booked for delivery for sunday (usual day), no slots left for tomorrow now, he will have to go out and grab some milk and bread at least in the morning

Zeitumschaltung · 07/03/2025 20:50

Possibly he should take over the shopping and cooking, sticking to an agreed budget, until he gets the hang of it. Tragic to be an adult with such a complete lack of basic skills.

Deedeesharpwhatkindoflady · 07/03/2025 20:50

Lyra87 · 07/03/2025 20:33

Weaponised incompetence. He's using it, and when you're better I'd have a conversation about it. If he's intelligent enough to have a job, he's intelligent enough to know what food is needed. If he says he didn't know what the family eats, then he's either lying or he's so uninvolved in family life that I'd honestly question why he thinks that's acceptable.

Exactly it's not hard to buy fruit, veg a bit of the usual stuff that's in the freezer, fridge, cupboards.
He took the lazy bastard option and bought crap from the newsagents.

Quinlan · 07/03/2025 20:50

The kids had crisps for dinner? What has he said about that? He actually thinks it’s ok that his kids have had crisps and chocolate for dinner?
What is his plan for tomorrow’s lunch and dinner? And has he brought you any soup or lucozade or anything?

AubernFable · 07/03/2025 20:51

Oh dear you’ve got the self sacrificing mumsnetters that truly believe men can do no wrong. The expectations are so low for some people.

He’s a moron, YANBU.
