Hogging the hot tub

I'm a member of a spa local to me and go regularly to swim. Always relax in the jacuzzi/hot tub for a bit afterwards. I've never seen the like today- 2 men were in the hot tub for, I shit you not, an hour and a half. They were in there while I swam lengths for over an hour. No sign of them getting out and I saw other swimmers looking, clearly waiting for them to shift so they could have a turn. After over an hour of swimming I'm not caring, I wanted a rest so I got in (room for 6 people).

They stayed in there for another half hour!

AIBU that this is just not on and you move on to let people have a shot of the hot tub? There are plenty of other facilities like sauna and so on that they could have moved on to.

This thread is bizarre. The responses, not the OP itself.

I would have felt uncomfortable getting in the hot tub if I was on my own. I’d probably have got in if I was with someone else, but not on my own. A six-person hot tub isn’t that big, so it would be impossible to get in it without being relatively close to them. A lone female, wearing very little, in close proximity to two unknown males who are already demonstrating entitled behaviour? No thanks.

OP did get in, and good on her for doing so. I wouldn’t have, being a victim of an assault that took place in not massively dissimilar environment. I find it strange that everyone is falling over themselves to say it was fine, without any consideration as to why others may not have felt comfortable.

Aside from that, I think it’s poor manners to monopolise any shared facility that you’ve not paid for exclusive use of.

as a pp said, don't sign up to a mixed sex facility then.

I'm not looking for private use of it

So what is the problem? I've got this far and still not seen what the issue is

You either wanted it to yourself - selfish
or... ? not sure what another option would be?

LastHeraldMage · 05/03/2025 13:47

@Changingplace

I don't time anything- there's no clock. The jacuzzi is right next to the pool, it's easy to see how long people stay in it. An hour and a half is wild.

and confused again - there is no clock but you know they were there for 90 minutes?

Not to mention I've used a lot of gyms in my life and never, ever encountered one without a clock.

I know how long it takes me to swim a certain distance. I do it every day.

There is no clock.

It’s not a gym.

I don't get the issue either, there was space for 4 others and nobody else got in during the 90 minute period apart from you.

If a hot tub is public then there is a high chance it won't be empty when you want to use it and you will have to share. You could get in and then 5 minutes later 2 men get in too.

I would rather not share a hot tub but I don't like sharing anything. Not a lot I can do about it unless I can one day afford a private hot tub, pool and a gym at my house.

I was sat in the hot tub alone at my gym for ages one day, probably not 90 minutes but I sat there for as long as I wanted. Nobody else joined me but maybe they were also fuming at me being entitled at me hogging it despite there being space for several other people.

Sirzy · 05/03/2025 15:07

Who is to say what is too long though? You said you sometimes stay in for half an hour others may argue that’s too long.

unless there is a sign to say “no more than 10 minutes” then people can surely make their own decisions?

Grammarnut · 05/03/2025 15:16

ArtTheClownIsNotAMime · 04/03/2025 21:05

There are two of them and room for six, why are you all waiting for them to get out?

If there are several men in the hot tub I feel a bit uncomfortable going in as well - I guess others could feel the same, including OP?

irregularegular · 05/03/2025 15:23

I think if there were only 2 of them in there then that's ok really. Other people can still get in. It would be unreasonable if the hot tub were actually full (6 people) and people were staying in for ages so no-one else could get in.

Then you need to join a single sex facility or one with the ability to book exclusive use. A shared, mixed sex facility isn't an appropriate choice for you. It's a you problem, not a them problem.

SeaShellsSanctuary1 · 05/03/2025 15:28

Meanwhile everyone else were waiting for you to get out of the bloody pool 😃😄

Kbroughton · 05/03/2025 16:03

I didnt renew my Bannatynes membership because of the obnoxious men who over use the hot top, steam room and sauna, spreading out so you have to ask them to move over, and sometimes even then their legs still touch you, then talking really loud voices etc. Totally get it, its annoying.

Yes, I agree and I might do that if I knew of a female only gym/spa locally and felt very uncomfortable rather than just a bit. As it is I don't give into the discomfort unless it's half a dozen men, in which case I adjourn to the sauna. I might be a bit miffed if someone spent an hour in the hot tub, but the gym/spa I go to has notices up saying 20 minutes is recommended limit and most people keep to that.

That wasn't a reply to you, as you know.

If you were happy to get in with them - then there's no problem as there was plenty of room.

Had you not have been happy to get in with them, it would have been a "you" problem not a "them" problem as they are just as entitled to be there as you are.

This is also a different situation. There were two of them, not several of them. If it had been several of them - say 4-6 - then that’s a different situation entirely because it’s approaching or at capacity and arguably they’re dominating it. But not when it’s only 2 out of a possible 6 spots.

wknobur · 05/03/2025 19:15

If they stay in a hot tub for an hour and a half they are taking 2 spaces from 2 people for an hour and a half. That's a wild amount of time

They weren't taking spaces from anyone else for an hour and a half because there were 4 spaces free.
If the hot tub was constantly full and those two people were sitting there for an hour and a half then that wouldn't be right because they were stopping new people from joining. However, that is not what happened and it would be very unfair of you to assume that if the hot tub was constantly full they would have behaved in the same way. If lots of people were using it then they might have decided to leave to let others have a turn. You do not know how they would have behaved.
If others feel uncomfortable getting into the hot tub which had free spaces because two men were already in there, that's their problem, not the men's problem.

But I as a man might. I belonged to gym about the year 2000. The steam room on a Saturday afternoon had a great conversation every week. So we'd sit there sweating like Rachel Reeves in a maths exam.

You don't personally own the hot tub...you don't get to dictate who uses it and for how long...get you're own spa bath..

You as a man? What the bloody hell does that even mean? Me as a woman, starfish, or chicken nugget wouldn’t. It’s rude.

I’m not dictating what anyone does. I’m saying it’s rude behaviour.
