Hogging the hot tub

Twobroschillininahottub · 04/03/2025 21:04

I'm a member of a spa local to me and go regularly to swim. Always relax in the jacuzzi/hot tub for a bit afterwards. I've never seen the like today- 2 men were in the hot tub for, I shit you not, an hour and a half. They were in there while I swam lengths for over an hour. No sign of them getting out and I saw other swimmers looking, clearly waiting for them to shift so they could have a turn. After over an hour of swimming I'm not caring, I wanted a rest so I got in (room for 6 people).

They stayed in there for another half hour!

AIBU that this is just not on and you move on to let people have a shot of the hot tub? There are plenty of other facilities like sauna and so on that they could have moved on to.

You’re angry about an issue you’ve made up in your head.

They used the hot tub.
They didn’t take up the entire thing so others could use it.
It sounds like there are other hot tubs at the same facilities.

You’re obviously very annoyed that they dared spend 90 minutes of their own time enjoying the use of a facility they paid for.

You have an idea in your head of how long someone should use a hot tub- but that’s notional on your part.

You spend an hour swimming. If someone was fuming at the side of the pool thinking you’re rude for not getting out after 45 minutes because that’s an amount of time they deem suitable for swimming, what would your response be?

That they’re wrong.

I would stay in it as long as I wanted if nobody else was approaching, as the men had done. If a few more got in, I'd move then but why on earth would I leave a facility I wanted to use that had space in it incase a group of 6 wanted to use it!? Weird mentality...

don't get me started on the person who said a woman hogging a treadmill for 90 mins was being unreasonable when there were 6 others free....

ClairDeLaLune · 05/03/2025 10:07

Eh? If there’s room for 6 they’re hardly hogging it. They probably just expected others would get in with them.

wknobur · 05/03/2025 10:34

They weren't hogging it. There were 4 spaces left. Anyone else who wanted to could have got in.

The treadmill post was a joke to show how ridiculous the OP is.

I got in...

I don't mind sharing

Then why are you moaning they were in there? It's up to them how long they stay in.

At a spa the hot tub was full of a hen party (rammed to over capacity) for over 45 mins. After my swim I still went and squeezed in... then squeezed out again 10 mins later.

ThDanielDay · 04/03/2025 21:35

Completely agree op.

Similar in my gym with one woman hogging the treadmill for 90 minutes the other day. Admittedly the other 6 were free but that's 90 minutes where she denied a person a treadmill

Eh? There was 6 free how was she denying anyone a treadmill 😂 you make no sense here.
OP an hour and a half if others are waiting is too long and quite selfish but still not denying others use of it if it fits 6. They could have buggered off and left you to relax since they'd already had an hour though.

onwardsup4 · 05/03/2025 10:58

Oh I see you were being sarcastic sorry 😂

CheesePlantBoxes · 05/03/2025 10:59

Twobroschillininahottub · 04/03/2025 21:24

If they stay in a hot tub for an hour and a half they are taking 2 spaces from 2 people for an hour and a half. That's a wild amount of time.

It fits six but that many people understandably never get in as it's just too... cosy. No one likes that. Unless it's a group of friends you only ever see 3 or 4 in it.

Even if 3 other people joined after I did, they still took up 2 spaces for an hour and a half and I think that's cheeky and absolutely bonkers. Never seen the like before.

They aren't taking spaces from anyone because there were 4 spaces.

That's like saying you using the pool for over an hour is taking a space from someone else.

valder · 05/03/2025 11:05

I realise that hot tubs are a relaxing feature after a swim or as part of a spa day, but I couldn't think of anything worse than sharing a mixed tiny pond full of the germs of others, either male or female. I wouldn't share a bath at home with anyone either so definitely not in public. And yes I know that hot tubs are not baths, but to me there is something sleazy sexual about them.

Maybe I'm prudish, but dahlings I do have some standards. 😉

you know they're chlorinated, right?

I do, and that's why I don't use swimming pools either. The smell is bloody awful and people pee in them.

ArtTheClownIsNotAMime · 04/03/2025 21:16

I have no idea what your problem is. You wanted the hot tub to yourself?

oh come on. I don't get this faux confusion.

while there is technically 'space for six' (or whatever number), in reality it is a bit cramped to essentially be sharing a bath with 5 strangers, most people would prefer to have a bit of room. Some women might not want to share it with men for whatever reasons.

If it's busy, fine, you accept that you either squeeze in or don't get a go, but if it's quiet and there's enough time and space for everyone to have 10, 15 minutes in smaller groups then it IS standard pool etiquette to take turns, everyone knows this...

Nope. Not the "standard etiquette" anywhere I've every been.

If there are still two thirds of the spaces free in a hot tub, the need to get out isn't triggered as there's still plenty of room for people to get in comfortably.

If the hot tub is full or approaching full - say just one spot left - then yes, it stands to reason that you get out after 20 minutes or so, to allow others a turn. And generally if it's full/getting full the first to get in should be the first to get out.

But this was 2 people in a hot tub for six, in a facility where there was also another hot tub available. Plenty of room. No need to get out. Even when OP got in with them it was still only half full, leaving a full 3 spaces should anyone want to get in as well.

Nobody at that facility at that time had paid for exclusive use or single sex use, so it would be very unreasonable for them to expect it. If that's what they want or need, then they either need to attend in "single sex" designated sessions (most places run a women only session a couple of times a week) or they need to pay the additional costs to go somewhere which offers exclusive use of hot tubs. That's "standard etiquette" -that you don't expect exclusive or single sex use of mixed sex shared facilities, you accept that they are shared spaces and you are expected to share just like everyone else.

PersephonesPomegranate · 05/03/2025 12:23

My local gym is like this too. Thankfully I'm not keen on the hot tub so it doesn't impact me.

In my experience, its usually the older gentlemen who reside in the hot tub for as long as humanly possible. In my gym, everyone has to get out when the bubbles go off for, for filtering purposes. Many of the hot-tub-hoggers will just sit up on the side and wait for the bubbles again so they can reclaim their permanent spot.

I call it Old Man Soup.

howdoyoudooooo · 05/03/2025 12:28

Yes @mrsm43s !

This is the unspoken standard etiquette for hot tubs and saunas and everything else similar. Only when it’s at or approaching full capacity does the need arise for someone to get out. And then it’s a case of whoever has been in for longest should be the first to make a move to get out.

In the scenario that OP described, it was never approaching capacity so there was never a need for the original people to get out.

EarthlyNightshade · 05/03/2025 12:50

I think if you can get in and out easily without having to brush past them, then it's ok.
Places I've been have signs suggesting that you should get out every 15-30 mins for health and safety reasons, it's not really great to immerse yourself in hot water for a long time.
I'd be annoyed too, OP, perhaps unjustifiably, but unlike most people on this thread, I see your point.

BeaAndBen · 05/03/2025 13:03

Hot tubs are marvellous for joint pain. It’s usually older people (including myself) who are in there for longer because it’s a wonderful relief.

As long as there were free spaces available they could stay in all day if that’s what they like. They’re using the facility as they like just as you’re using it to swim as you like.

It's not faux confusion. There were two people in a hot tub with room for six; this is not an etiquette issue to any normal person.
