Hogging the hot tub

I'm a member of a spa local to me and go regularly to swim. Always relax in the jacuzzi/hot tub for a bit afterwards. I've never seen the like today- 2 men were in the hot tub for, I shit you not, an hour and a half. They were in there while I swam lengths for over an hour. No sign of them getting out and I saw other swimmers looking, clearly waiting for them to shift so they could have a turn. After over an hour of swimming I'm not caring, I wanted a rest so I got in (room for 6 people).

They stayed in there for another half hour!

AIBU that this is just not on and you move on to let people have a shot of the hot tub? There are plenty of other facilities like sauna and so on that they could have moved on to.

So you mean to tell me that you swam in the pool for an HOUR, thereby hogging a lane that someone else may have wanted to use?! The brass neck of you 😤

GargoylesofBeelzebub · 04/03/2025 22:02

And last time this happened I started talking with my friends about our teenage girls starting their periods. That cleared them out immediately. 😂😂

Ponderingwindow · 04/03/2025 22:03

There was a health club with a pool and hot tub in my old city that had a chronic problem with this. The old me would just take up residence for hours and I don’t know exactly how to explain it, but they took up much more space than the number of people in the tub. It was manspreading, the jacuzzi version.

They also didn’t really make women feel particularly welcome when we wanted to soothe our muscles after a vigorous swim. It was the only club with a pool that didn’t require a significant drive so taking our business elsewhere wasn’t simple.

It absolutely is manspreading. Have seen it so many time.

No lanes, everyone manages to swim fine and share the space because pools are very large.

So why do you keep going on about their ‘cheek’? There were two of them, it fits six! They weren’t preventing others from using it!

This is very true. The older guy had his legs up on the seat part. The pair of them were talking business very loudly. Absolutely dire.

@AFairDistance

I don't think it's polite etiquette

I don't think they did anything wrong by under-occupying a hot tub made for 6 people.

Then again, I'd much rather go home and have a bath.

@Twobroschillininahottub were they playing footsie under the bubbles???

I will too when we finally have one!

So where’s the problem?

I've answered that quite a few times now

It’s all relative though isn’t it? 2 people in a 6 person hot tub is only 1/3 occupied. I hardly think you’d classify a pool that is 1/3 occupied as being so busy as to deter people getting in. It’s about people’s ridiculous squeamishness at being in proximity to strangers in bathing attire, perhaps, but it’s nothing to do with how long they stayed in because they could have got in if they wanted to. They didn’t want to and that’s that, but it’s not these men’s fault they can’t be grownups.

Twobroschillininahottub · 04/03/2025 22:15

@wordywitch

but it’s not these men’s fault they can’t be grownups.

I'd say it was these two men who weren't behaving like grown ups. Staying an hour and a half in a spa hot tub and yapping away loudly the whole time is treating it like it's your private one in your garden.

howdoyoudooooo · 04/03/2025 22:16

You might think you’ve explained what the problem is, but you haven’t really. Yes it’s unusual to spend that long in a hot tub. But there was always space remaining available so anybody else could have got in. You did get in. You say you weren’t expecting exclusive use. So what is the problem?

You wanted to use the hot tub and you got in it, even after reading the posts I don’t they the problem, they didn’t stop you using it

IfIHadAHeart · 04/03/2025 22:18

OP I know what you mean.

When I’ve seen this happen, they are usually taking up more space than necessary, talking bollocks quite loudly and positioning themselves in such a way that you have no choice but to sit between them. I think lots of women would feel uncomfortable doing so, and I agree it’s rude.

wordywitch · 04/03/2025 22:18

So your problem was with them talking loudly. Why don’t you just say that instead of hiding behind this made up ‘hot tub etiquette’?

ItShouldntHappenToMeYet · 04/03/2025 22:19

Why anyone would want to sit in a bath of hot water previously used by gawd knows how many.
A veritable petri-dish of dead skin, hair, body fluids
Gross!!

Eh? The talking bullshit loudly was just the cherry on the cake. Parking up for an hour and a half and talking loudly are both rude. If they were there for an hour and a half in silence it's rude, if they were in for ten minutes flapping their jaws loudly, that's also rude.

Hiding 😂

I think it's only on Mumsnet, where people enjoy being contrary, that anyone would say sitting in a busy spa hot tub for an hour and a half isn't rude.

You were in the bloody pool for as long as they were in the bloody hot tub! How is that perfectly fine but what they did was rude? You’re mad. Certifiable.
