Hogging the hot tub

Twobroschillininahottub · 04/03/2025 21:04

I'm a member of a spa local to me and go regularly to swim. Always relax in the jacuzzi/hot tub for a bit afterwards. I've never seen the like today- 2 men were in the hot tub for, I shit you not, an hour and a half. They were in there while I swam lengths for over an hour. No sign of them getting out and I saw other swimmers looking, clearly waiting for them to shift so they could have a turn. After over an hour of swimming I'm not caring, I wanted a rest so I got in (room for 6 people).

They stayed in there for another half hour!

AIBU that this is just not on and you move on to let people have a shot of the hot tub? There are plenty of other facilities like sauna and so on that they could have moved on to.

Another one who doesn't see the issue. The hot tub is big enough for 6. Only two people were in it. They were not stopping anyone else from using it.
Had the hot tub had 4 people in it and someone else came to use it but felt it was too tight for comfort then you would have a point.
I doubt it even occurred to them that you were not comfortable getting in a (public) hot tub with other people in it.

Twobroschillininahottub · 04/03/2025 23:52

were timing them

I wasn't timing them, I saw that they were in the hot tub for an hour and a half.

and took it upon yourself to get in the tub as some kind of lesson

I got in the hot tub because I wanted to get in the hot tub.

It's wonderful that you have the imagination to come up with so much armchair psychology about it all but I'm simply dicking about on Mumsnet talking about a thing that happened that I think is rude.

I'm perfectly comfortable getting in the hot tub with other people in it

You repeatedly said ‘they were using it for 90
mins’. I mean that’s timing their use. Your OP also talks about ‘bloody getting in’ as if it’s some kind of confrontation to do that? Most people don’t spend any time at all worrying how other people use public facilities unless it’s dangerous.

Twobroschillininahottub · 04/03/2025 23:57

@Roseshavethorns

I keep responding to the same questions so I can't be bothered repeating answers any more

I wasn't timing them, I just noticed they were in for the duration of time that it took me to swim so many lengths, plus the time I and another woman were also in the hot tub.

There was no confrontation.

Thankfully I never spend any time "worrying" about it because no one has ever been rude enough to camp out for an hour and a half before.

I don't think you are cut out for using a shared facility, to be honest.

IfIHadAHeart · 05/03/2025 04:47

This thread is bizarre. The responses, not the OP itself.

I would have felt uncomfortable getting in the hot tub if I was on my own. I’d probably have got in if I was with someone else, but not on my own. A six-person hot tub isn’t that big, so it would be impossible to get in it without being relatively close to them. A lone female, wearing very little, in close proximity to two unknown males who are already demonstrating entitled behaviour? No thanks.

OP did get in, and good on her for doing so. I wouldn’t have, being a victim of an assault that took place in not massively dissimilar environment. I find it strange that everyone is falling over themselves to say it was fine, without any consideration as to why others may not have felt comfortable.

Aside from that, I think it’s poor manners to monopolise any shared facility that you’ve not paid for exclusive use of.

Marchitectmummy · 05/03/2025 05:34

People use spas differently and that's their perogative. You've described them using a third of the hot tub, leaving plenty of space for others to get in also. Maybe if it got to near capacity, they would have moved, but it didn't.

They haven't done anything wrong. You chose to spend 1.5 hrs in the pool and hot tub. They chose a hot tub.

No wrong done here. You sound very selfish and controlling.

And that's really sad, but these people didn't do that to you and shouldn't have to adjust their behaviour to suit yours. It is a shared facility as you say, the spa owners presumably haven't applied maximum time limits anywhere in the spa as I'm sure the op would have mentioned it, so why as a customer do you believe anyone has a right to do so?

Try to overcome your discomfort. It will benefit you to do so. They weren't monopolising. There was space for others, and the OP hasn't described any resistance from them to share.

ItShouldntHappenToMeYet · 05/03/2025 07:10

They were not monopolising the cess-pit. It had room for 6. They were 2 of them, so 4 spaces left.
In this case, the OP seemingly, would rather seeth than challenge the men (with their loud, boring conversation, allegedly) for 'hogging', yet happily has challenged every person who has disagreed with her here, which seems odd.

They weren't preventing anyone getting in...

Whaleandsnail6 · 05/03/2025 07:19

Yabu.

Had they been taking up the whole hot tub then you would have a point.

As it stands, there was 2 of them in a spcae for 6 so other people could also get in.

Had the spa got a note up telling people to get out of the hot tub after 15 minutes then again you would have a point, but you have just made up a rule and are annoyed that others do not follow this rule, even though it was not stopping you from using the hot tub

I do not often go to spas so I wouldnt know about the unknown rule of only staying in the hot tub for no longer then 20 minutes so as not to piss off other spa users.

Readmorebooks40 · 05/03/2025 07:24

YANBU you are only supposed to be in for 15/20mins. I would be self conscious too sitting with 2 people I didn't know in a small space. It's manners for everyone to take turns. Yes you can share it but it's still rude for them to be in it for so long.

It's not manners (in fact it's incredibly rude) to expect other people to stop enjoying their hot tub when there's spaces available to you so that you can have exclusive use of a shared communal facility.

Want or need exclusive use (or single sex use)-then you join somewhere than offers that and pay accordingly.

The sense of entitlement some people have is mindblowing.

If the hot tub was full to capacity - then of course you move on after 20 minutes or so to allow someone else to get in. But when there are still unused spaces available (and a lot of them) then you can stay as long as you like.

GETTINGLIKEMYMOTHER · 05/03/2025 08:48

While I do my lengths at my David Lloyd pooI, I see a selection of various people, in ones and twos, getting in and out of the jacuzzi.

For myself I never fancy it, I wonder why?

Ginsmything · 05/03/2025 09:04

In my gym the hot tub switches to cleaning mode after about 15 mins so everyone has to get out whilst it goes through the cycle. That appears to make people move on and leave it free for the next lot. No lolling about for hours although I did witness a man shaving while he was in the jacuzzi 🤢

Twobroschillininahottub · 04/03/2025 21:24

If they stay in a hot tub for an hour and a half they are taking 2 spaces from 2 people for an hour and a half. That's a wild amount of time.

It fits six but that many people understandably never get in as it's just too... cosy. No one likes that. Unless it's a group of friends you only ever see 3 or 4 in it.

Even if 3 other people joined after I did, they still took up 2 spaces for an hour and a half and I think that's cheeky and absolutely bonkers. Never seen the like before.

It’s really none of your business what they do. Is it?

It didn’t impact you, so why the rage?

KimberleyClark · 05/03/2025 09:17

YANBU OP. I have this at my gym (Bannatynes) too. As you say, although the tub theoretically fits 6, it’s just a bit too intimate with more than 4. I Also I’m short and need to sit in a particular part of the tub otherwise I’m chin deep and can’t steady myself with my arms on the side!

I can’t see the problem. If there had been six of them and a queue forming, that would’ve been different.
