Is war likely?

In the UK in the next few years given world events?

What do people think will happen?

My personal view is that it is likely though of course not inevitable - but there is a path now for Europe to step up - but with the mad orange man who knows what will happen.

I’m glad you’ve asked this, I struggle to keep up with it all and fully understand, but I am quite worried.

There are countries, who are definitely not our allies, who are gearing up for war and who are starting to form closer relationships with each other. Russia, North Korea, Iran, China. And the US appears to be sidling up to Russia.

We are already experiencing tactics such as massive cyber attacks, attacks on shipping, cables being cut.

Some form of war is coming.

Good grief, just turn off the news for a few days. The world will keep turning. The fear mongering is rife on ol' Mumsnet tonight.

For those of you with genuine anxiety, so much so that it's keeping you up at night, please take a deep breath and relax. I worried my way through the 80s about nuclear war (as furiously hinted at by MSM at the time), and it never happened. Life is too short to waste your time worrying about something you have no control over.

welshpolarbear · 04/03/2025 21:39

I remember being petrified in high school in 1991, age 12, as everyone was expecting the Gulf War to erupt into WW3.

I've learnt not to panic now. There have been many times it's been threatened/scare mongering.

I don't think this time is any different. Hopefully there's enough sane people to keep things level.

SpottedDonkey · 04/03/2025 21:41

No. Nobody is going to attract the U.K. because of our nukes. That’s the whole point of having an ‘independent nuclear deterrent’.

It’s important to remember that although the Ukraine war has been going on for 3 years, the Russians have been very careful not to drop a single bomb, or put a single soldier’s boot on NATO territory. And NATO have trained & armed the
brave Ukrainians, but have been very careful not to get involved in actual fighting against the Russians. Because both sides understand that such actions could escalate into World War 3. And nobody, on any side, wants that.

It’s also important to bear in mind that, for all his many faults, Donald Trump is not George Bush. He wants peace, not wars.

InWalksBarberalla · 04/03/2025 21:41

It's looking likely that a US and Russia alliance is being formed. You'd think that would stop WW3 because who'd be crazy enough to take that on.

Me too. I was 14 and I remember this lovely lady from our church Sunday school reassuring us. Fortunately back then, there wasn’t the internet and social media panicking people more. No-one knows for sure and i’m not going to start panicking over a war. Donald in power does concern me, and this is exactly the worry when he got elected again. I so wish that had taken another direction.
