Is war likely?

user1492538376 · 04/03/2025 16:28

In the UK in the next few years given world events?

What do people think will happen?

My personal view is that it is likely though of course not inevitable - but there is a path now for Europe to step up - but with the mad orange man who knows what will happen.

Doing a better job than Europe have done. The war in Ukraine has been going on for three years. Europe have spent that time just making sympathetic noises, and thrown money and weapons at the situation. And now Trump has started to try and diffuse the situation, albeit not very well, Europe suddenly start trying to put plans in place to try and resolve. Where have they been the last three years? Trump may not be succeeding in his clumsy attempts, but at least it’s given Europe a kick up their arses.

I don't see Trump diffusing the situation at all. And if by ending the war you mean trampling over a nation state to appease your bully buddy then sure, it's working.

Newfoundzestforlife · 05/03/2025 07:10

Maybe you shouldn't call him the "mad orange man".
You wouldn't make fun of another race for their skin colour, you wouldn't dare....so don't be a hypocrite.

Its super naive though to think the good side will always win. The EU were happy to buddy up with the school yard bully when they were on their side. Now they've made themselves super vulnerable and might need to make some deals that aren't ideal but better than the alternative.

EasternStandard · 05/03/2025 07:17

I'd say no but more a hopefully not as who can be definite about much.

But I think it's less likely than I did a couple of days ago with ramping up of fight rhetoric.

Why do you think Russia want to take over Europe rather than stop NATO expansion? And how exactly do you think Europe would stop them without the US? Angry tweets and cosplaying photo ops do not magically create a powerful military.

Likely outcome is that Russia will get to keep the parts of Ukraine they've already got. And then hopefully NATO (assuming it exists) will stops pushing up against Russia's borders. And the EU can merrily continue to spend billions on a Russian fossil fuels.

Because Putin said so, in his speech about a new Russian Empire. He is obsessed with regaining Russia's former glory.

With all due respect, both Putin and Trump are insane you can’t possibly know if they have a close relationship.

Is that relevant to my main point?

Lex345 · 05/03/2025 07:22

It is interesting who gets painted as the good and bad guys, really.

Putin, however baselessly, has claimed the invasion of Ukraine is because of neo nazis in the Ukrainian government persecuting Russians in the Donbas.

US/UK attacked Iraq, however baselessly, claiming they were developing weapons of mass destruction. The difference is the Iraqi forces fell quickly.

No, I do not agree with Russia's invasion of Ukraine. But let's not paint the West as white knights either. The powerful will always act in their own interests at the expense of those who cannot fight back.

Look at the horror show US/UK left in Afghanistan. We abandoned those people to a terrible fate. Especially women.

More likely civil war within the UK than a world war. There’s a palpable unrest and frustration atm in this country, like a bubbling cauldron. If the Government don’t start to get a grip, things will kick off within the next couple of years. That’s what I worry about.

Nah look at the state of the UK now and no one is out protesting. We have become so apathetic.

Dr David Betz, professor of War studies at King's College London says within 5 years

Isn’t he talking about civil war rather than ww3?

Floppyflippers · 05/03/2025 07:26

Is that all you have? Keep mentioning his skin colour and calling him mad for not holding your views?

Trump is orange and mental !!! Aren't I witty, ha ha ha.

Of all the things he's done and you go for petty insults.

Grow up.

1983pacmanchampion · 05/03/2025 07:37

noblegiraffe · 04/03/2025 22:00

By breaking up NATO?

Well what's the point of it? Good for bullying small Balkan states and blowing up Chinese Embassies true, but they don't even do much of that anymore. Article 5 isn't worth the paper it is written on, it just commits members to a response and would probably amount to a strongly worded email from the "h'office of the secretary general". And who is the enemy anyway? Russia, not exactly the Warsaw Pact are they? They have not rolled over Ukraine despite their army being bigger and better equipped and arguably more motivated (professionals vs conscripts). If Putin did* want to take over half of Europe or all of it, he now knows that he can't go toe to toe with even a national army. The French would mop the floor with what is left of the Russian army. So NATO is redundant.

*a fantasy/propaganda position in my opinion and that of plenty of serious commentators

There are countries, who are definitely not our allies, who are gearing up for war and who are starting to form closer relationships with each other. Russia, North Korea, Iran, China. And the US appears to be sidling up to Russia.

We are already experiencing tactics such as massive cyber attacks, attacks on shipping, cables being cut.

Some form of war is coming.

I think some form of war is already happening and has been for years.

Brexit, meddling in elections, a relentless propaganda and disinformation campaign. Russia has been actively working to create division in the West for years

Thank you for saying this. I am no fan of Trump, but I find this very juvenile and offensive.

That still doesn't mean that Trump is ending the war. So maybe he will get Putin to stop attacking Ukraine for now, in exchange for the minerals to US and land to Russia - but how long will that continue? What's to stop Putin going back for more?

It's naive to think Trump has any plans to end war for real. His plan is to make more deals and make more money. It's naive to think otherwise. He's no philanthropist.

Bad orange tanner is not a race. It’s not even a skin colour.

No one is being racist towards Donald Trump.

Yup, Russia has been engaged in a hybrid war with the west for a very long time now. Disinformation, election meddling, assassination on foreign soil, and amped up recently with acts of sabotage

This. And Trump won't stop any of that.

SquashedSquashess · 05/03/2025 07:43

I do enjoy all the people who say “No”. Remember how certain we all were of that answer in 2016 when it came to Brexit and Trump’s first election. And how wrong we were.

The possibility of war in Europe is much higher now than at any other point since WWII. That doesn’t mean war will happen, Europe’s leaders are of course doing their best to keep conflict contained and restore peace. But it is not beyond the realms of possibility in the next few years.

kungfoofighting · 05/03/2025 07:45

ShutUpForTheLoveOfGod · 04/03/2025 21:33

The US are trying to stop the bloody war fgs.

The US aren’t ’trying to stop the war’. They're ‘trying to acquire minerals for their tech industry’.

The welfare of Ukranians (or anyone else) doesn’t come into it.

Switcher · 05/03/2025 07:46

Yes but we won't perceive it as war in the conventional sense. Our interests will be undermined until it is too late to change anything and then I should think we'll all pretend it's absolutely fine because netflix is still on.

TooManyRabbitsAndNotEnoughChickens · 05/03/2025 07:52

Everyone is talking about war with Russia, but the US is threatening to annex foreign territory (Greenland & Canada). I guess it's only a war if anyone stands up to them
