Is war likely?

user1492538376 · 04/03/2025 16:28

In the UK in the next few years given world events?

What do people think will happen?

My personal view is that it is likely though of course not inevitable - but there is a path now for Europe to step up - but with the mad orange man who knows what will happen.

No. Nobody is going to attract the U.K. because of our nukes. That’s the whole point of having an ‘independent nuclear deterrent’.

It’s important to remember that although the Ukraine war has been going on for 3 years, the Russians have been very careful not to drop a single bomb, or put a single soldier’s boot on NATO territory. And NATO have trained & armed the
brave Ukrainians, but have been very careful not to get involved in actual fighting against the Russians. Because both sides understand that such actions could escalate into World War 3. And nobody, on any side, wants that.

It’s also important to bear in mind that, for all his many faults, Donald Trump is not George Bush. He wants peace, not wars.

Your understanding is woeful, and sadly out of date.

We do not have an independent nuclear deterrent as it's reliant on the US to trigger it - and they are no longer an ally. France has one, but not us.

Article 5 which is the foundation on which NATO has succeeded thus far is no longer solid thanks to POTUS and his remarks, plus his history of throwing partners under the bus (see Afghan government of 20 years, and the 1994 Ukrainian Treaty agreed by US and UK).

It's looking likely that a US and Russia alliance is being formed. You'd think that would stop WW3 because who'd be crazy enough to take that on.

Ridiculous take. All it means is that they could try to take over whoever they want, and you think European countries would just surrender to the Russians without a fight? Have you seen what Russia does to people from areas they capture?

The Russians have the pee-pee tape of Trump, this will prevent the US from trying to interfere too much in their antics. That’s why Trump is dismantling any opposition in the US. His plan is they will stand by while Russia does what it likes and it’s up to Europe to defend itself.

Dr David Betz, professor of War studies at King's College London says within 5 years

I think his knowledge trumps all of ours (no pun intended).

Yes! It's kicking off on the 21st June 2026. You heard it here first OP.

I remember being petrified in high school in 1991, age 12, as everyone was expecting the Gulf War to erupt into WW3.

I've learnt not to panic now. There have been many times it's been threatened/scare mongering.

I don't think this time is any different. Hopefully there's enough sane people to keep things level.

I was a bit younger but I remember it clearly too and I now follow the same stance as you.

sparrowflewdown · 04/03/2025 22:09

A civil war - without a doubt. I predicted this 10 years ago.
WW3 - yes in some form, possibly small missiles but most likely cyber strikes affecting, air, health, banking, utilities etc.

Flippercanorious · 04/03/2025 22:11

No..despite how Starmer would like it. Good for the economy. Trump wants peace

Do you think Putin does?

What about China? Iran? North Korea?

AlternativeView · 04/03/2025 22:12

Well there has been lots of talk about trump and zelensky and starmer in the mix but we don't really know what putin wants.
Apparently he's running on a war eccomony and may not want to stop a little rumbling in Ukraine that he knows he can't win, because it's making money.
Stopping it or taking on a larger war would finish him off.
The mineral deal is a sly way of getting USA citizens into Ukraine. If you were putin would you want to risk any conflict.
Putin maybe at a point where he doesn't care?

The US are trying to stop the bloody war fgs.

How?

Trump is looking more and more like a Russian plant. The only way he wants to stop the bloody war is by giving Putin what he wants. How is that good for Ukraine or anyone remotely near Russia?

You haven't noticed that China is gearing up to invade Taiwan?

Allihavetodoisdream · 04/03/2025 22:17

Yes, but at least being right in the middle we will go quickly

terracottatrees · 04/03/2025 22:18

Of course there won't be WW3. No one can afford it, and there's the worlds so hung up human rights where people would simply refuse to fight. So no, of course there won't be.

MeinKraft · 04/03/2025 22:21

There’s a lot of willy waving at the moment, but hopefully things will settle down quickly. Trump is known for changing his mind on a whim so you never know what the next day will bring.

No.

Good grief, just turn off the news for a few days. The world will keep turning. The fear mongering is rife on ol' Mumsnet tonight.

For those of you with genuine anxiety, so much so that it's keeping you up at night, please take a deep breath and relax. I worried my way through the 80s about nuclear war (as furiously hinted at by MSM at the time), and it never happened. Life is too short to waste your time worrying about something you have no control over.

Agreed. My friend is so worried about terrorism that she won’t go to London (her sister lives there) and wouldn’t come with me to a concert in Manchester. She asked why am I so ok with it.

Because I’m just living my life, I was evacuated from my home because of a bomb scare last year. Thankfully it was a false alarm but it just goes to show that I could have sat inside my house worrying about the very thing that could have killed me by being there.

Life is too short. I’m not worrying about WW3.

There were more wars under Biden than Trump so no. As much as people seem to be frothing for it.

For the last 5 years.
