Is war likely?

user1492538376 · 04/03/2025 16:28

In the UK in the next few years given world events?

What do people think will happen?

My personal view is that it is likely though of course not inevitable - but there is a path now for Europe to step up - but with the mad orange man who knows what will happen.

War is never an inevitability but neither can it be dismissed. The tides are shifting, alliances are fraying, and the UK's defense posture is far from certain. If we aren't vigilant, we risk being swept up in events we could have controlled. It's time for leadership that sees the storm coming and acts before it breaks

Is that you Keir?

chaosmaker · 05/03/2025 00:02

@user1492538376 very likely now that even nuttier nutters have been voted into power.

Edited for typo

MrsSkylerWhite · 05/03/2025 00:03

Unlikely.

My husband lived through the Suez crisis. I grew up with threats of nuclear war on the TV every Sunday morning on the then equivalent of LK on Sunday. (And adverts in very serious voices telling us to paint our windows white and line the airing cupboard with mattresses.)

Didn't happen then, don’t think it will happen now.

Seriously mate, stop worrying about it. Spring has sprung, the sun is shining, the crocuses are coming up. Get out and enjoy them and FFS stop following the (desperate to fill 24 hour) news.

If it is going to happen there’s sweet FA that any of us minions can do about it anyway, short of putting our head between our knees and kissing our arses goodbye.

Get on with your life. You’re more likely than at any other time in history to celebrate your 100th.

Putin is no spring chicken and I think he will give it his best shot before he kicks the bucket. And Trump is stupid enough to encourage him, if not join him.

Stop with the scaremongering,

JoyousGreyOrca · 05/03/2025 00:57

We are in a kind of war already with trade tariffs and cyber attacks. I think this level of attack will continue to rumble on and will affect many economies, including ours.
There will not be war on the ground in the UK though.

Yes! It's kicking off on the 21st June 2026. You heard it here first OP.

Pasta has been difficult to get hold of recently 😉

The US are trying to stop the bloody war fgs.

Trump and gang are trying to appease Putin. He wants the war stopped more than anyone - Russia has suffered massive losses. The ending of the war wouldn’t involve him packing his troops off home - it would be Ukraine (and the rest oft world) accepting the loss of Uktanian territory (within their country!) and possibly even more. Putin has proved if you give an inch then he’ll take a mile. It won’t stop until he has taken the whole country and then what? Who’s next?

Stop with the scaremongering,

With all due respect they don’t have close relationships and even if they did I think with the person he is reported to be and his previous actions and own statements - he would probably consider the loss a small price to pay if he could go down in history as the modern Russian leader who reunited and expanded the Soviet Union. That’s the dream and he’s doing his damndest to make it a reality with whatever time he has left.

No. Nobody is going to attract the U.K. because of our nukes. That’s the whole point of having an ‘independent nuclear deterrent’.

It’s important to remember that although the Ukraine war has been going on for 3 years, the Russians have been very careful not to drop a single bomb, or put a single soldier’s boot on NATO territory. And NATO have trained & armed the
brave Ukrainians, but have been very careful not to get involved in actual fighting against the Russians. Because both sides understand that such actions could escalate into World War 3. And nobody, on any side, wants that.

It’s also important to bear in mind that, for all his many faults, Donald Trump is not George Bush. He wants peace, not wars.

Very eloquent post- thank you.

With all due respect, both Putin and Trump are insane you can’t possibly know if they have a close relationship.

Stop with the scaremongering,

Oh do wake up. Hitler had family and friends too but still started a war. Do you think Putin gives a shit about his family, his bloodline? If he did he would have put an end to this madness long before now. His family will always be remembered as being associated with one of the most evil men in history. Who wants to be associated with that? They can change identities with new names etc but they can’t change their bloodline.

CeaselesslyIntoThePast · 05/03/2025 05:54

The mad orange man is very anti-war thank goodness.

Crazyhousewife23 · 05/03/2025 06:01

No wars. However we will end up with many riots due to the current muppet. The country will only be pushed so long before they decide to take action and I predict even starmer won’t be able to contain what is yet to come.

It's looking likely that a US and Russia alliance is being formed. You'd think that would stop WW3 because who'd be crazy enough to take that on.

Thats the danger! A couple of powerful nations with pure authoritarian ambitions, to rule by force and invade other countries (Trump yesterday...he said he'd have Greenland one way or another, for example). That's a huge danger.

Chiseltip · 05/03/2025 06:16

Who exactly would we be be fighting?

We don't have any armed forces in the UK, not really. Not anymore. We just play toy soldiers and polish the rust on out outdated and obsolete equipment. Not even our soldiers want to fight anymore. The current generation of young people have no desire to sign up to fight for anything.

shortoedtreecreeper · 05/03/2025 06:19

Yes I think it's likely.Putin will be eyeing up baltic republics, Moldova will be probably next and then Finland or Sweden.
It might take a while for him as he's building up his war machine further.

I agree..but sadly we dont have any real leadership at the moment.

Lex345 · 05/03/2025 06:35

As much as I am not pro Trump, this strategy of his may just work to bring about some form of peace. All of these public declarations/decisions on Ukraine are aimed at placating/finessing Russia to come to the table. As with any end of war agreement, there will have to be concessions and losses on both sides, unfortunately.

UN vote recently and US voted against a motion to condemn Russia's invasion-this is the first time they have done this and voted with Russia.
This might not seem significant-but the US are courting Russia.

I am not sure that the deal that will eventually brokered between US and Russia will be beneficial for Ukraine, sadly. However, if Russia can be brought onside just enough to have a friendlier relationship with US, we might just see an end to active war in Ukraine, at least for a reasonable period.

The world at a whole is unlikely to ever be fully at peace. The best it seems we can hope for is avoiding global conflict. Very sad really, when 99% of the world's population are probably just like most of us and want to live in peace.

If they decide to, and Russia backs them -who is going to stop them? Would Europe start a war with their military depleted like it is. Would they launch nukes assuring mutual destruction. Would they send off their youth to die? I can't see the UK pulling young men out of their houses to go fit as their mothers try and fight back. Maybe Europe needs to start cozing up to China.

To be fair, the UK have already started building a closer trade relationship with China

The chancellor's gamble with China: What price is Rachel Reeves willing to pay for closer trading ties?

The UK sticks out diplomatically and economically by refusing to impose extra tariffs on Chinese car companies. In return, Britain is hoping to boost exports of financial services in the coming years.
