Tell us in the tiniest of detail what you did from the moment you last switched your car engine off.

What were you carrying into the house? Did you have your child/children with you? What were you and they wearing? What were they carrying? Can you picture yourself opening your front door? What did you do as soon as you walked through the door? Then what did you do?

Going through this process of thinking, picturing it, trying to remember every tiny detail may help you solve the mystery.

Also, remember, they are in your house somewhere. You just haven’t looked in the right spot yet….

Did you go up to the bathroom, or to a bedroom when you can't home last time?
Last time I had a key panic I found them on the washing basket on the landing where is absent mindedly put them down when I rushed to the loo.

When I got in I went up to dc's room
i cant quite remember where I went after that I think my room to get changed in my pj's
usually I would hang them up put them
on the table or put them on the stairs on my way up

My friend found hers in the tea pot, after she paid for a replacement 😳

They must be in the house slipped behind or into something possibly?

Have you checked every pocket and bag you own, under the lining incase there is a hole?

MakeItRain · 02/02/2025 20:11

I "lost" my car and house key once and eventually found them in a food packet in one of my kitchen cupboards. I think it was something like a packet of breakfast biscuits. I'd grabbed one and helpfully dumped my keys in the box and put it away again! Maybe check your kitchen! Hope you find it.

Children are good at placing keys in toy handbags or under the seat on a ride on toy etc

BusMumsHoliday · 02/02/2025 20:16

I've not read the whole thread so sorry if you've tried this but have you tried linings of your coats and handbags? I've lost stuff inside those before.

@Bagladygirl did you check the friends house you went to for dinner if you locked car before going there by foot?

oaklint · 02/02/2025 20:20

When I loose things the method I use is what I call a "sweep". I start in one corner of a room and sweep my way through the house. I check EVERY single place in the corner I start in and check EVERYTHING in my path as I move through the room, and then through the house. That way I know I've not missed a spot.

I once lost my car keys. The house was a complete shit tip at the time (two disabled kids so that was just life back then). I took a day off work and did a sweep the house, tidying as I went. My reasoning being that tidying would help me check everything and, if I didn't find my keys, at least I'd have a lovely tidy house as a consolation!

It was many years ago I lost those car keys and I honestly can't remember if I found them or not, but I do vividly remember the joy of sitting in that lovely tidy house afterwards! 😂

Good luck!

I used the key to get in my house - they are all
tigether however I have spare house keys so that's not as much of an issue

If you’ve lost the spare set you’re going to have to pay for a new set of those too when your lease ends, you’ll need to give back two sets of keys.

Exactly this.

thenightsky · 02/02/2025 20:33

Bloody keys are a nightmare to be fair. If you do find them, can you come back and say where please? I'm currently missing my very best handbag. The only designer one I've ever owned. And it was a gift. Sad

AuntieObnoxious · 02/02/2025 20:48

Have you checked the fridge?
I lost mine, it was a nightmare my dh finally found in the fridge. I worked out I came in & put some shopping away - milk.
My friend also lost hers - found them in the fridge, she’d got her packed lunch out to take to work and accidentally put her keys in. Apparently it’s really common.

TroysMammy · 02/02/2025 20:53

Put the coat you were wearing on and then check the pockets. Were you wearing gloves and or a hat. Empty your bags and feel inside the lining.

fiorentina · 02/02/2025 20:55

Some car insurance policies cover lost keys, so do check carefully if you can claim. However I hope they mysteriously turn up again, asap.
Have you asked DC if they have hidden them or ‘posted them’ somewhere? Bribery may be needed for an honest answer..

I lost my car key for three days once. I found them in an umbrella. The umbrella was on the stairs, I had thrown the key on the stairs and it must have landed in the umbrella.

Good luck

diddl · 02/02/2025 21:06

If you take them upstairs might they be under the bed? (sorry if already asked).

Cinnamonbonbon · 02/02/2025 21:10

Do you have a “normal” place where your keys live? If so, start by looking all around that area.

last time I lost my keys for days, they turned up inside an oven glove! The glove was hanging on the oven door handle. When I’d tried to put the keys in our key pot, which lives in the cupboard above the oven, they had fallen and been “caught” by the glove. Because the keys hadn’t hit the floor I’d had no idea they’d not safely deposited into the key pot.

ImTheMidsomerMurderer · 02/02/2025 21:22

Any holes in jacket pockets and they might now be in the lining? I wish you lived next to me, I'd be round to help you look lol.

Ignore the arsehole posts OP. Some people on here just love to make spiteful jibes at people.

I hope you find them soon.

Agreed

. @Stravaig - "patiently untangling"???? Strange term you've used there, given you were taking delight in mocking someone. Nasty,

Good luck, OP, I'm sorry you're in such a bind xx

KnewYearKnewMe · 02/02/2025 21:30

Not in your front door lock, OP?

Brenna24 · 02/02/2025 21:33

Check that there are no holes on the lining of your pocket or your handbag. I once thought that I had lost keys but they were in the lining of my coat and there was a hole in the pocket. The good news is that if you used them to get in, they must've in the house unless you have done something like thrown them in a bin.

ThreePointOneFourOneFiveNine · 02/02/2025 21:37

I think you said you sometimes put them “on the drawer”. Do you mean on top of a chest of drawers? If so, search the drawers. I found my spare in a drawer below where I keep it months after I lost it. It was mixed in with all the gloves and hats.

is your DC old enough to have moved it?
