My current car came with only one set of keys. It would cost £200 to replace them. I don't have that money to spare, so I make sure that I always put the in the same place when I get home.

I thought I’d lost my keys once but I’d actually left them in the front door when I was unlocking it…

That's where my husband's lost keys are usually found

Lemonyyy · 02/02/2025 17:37

Fridge, microwave, bookshelf, set of drawers anywhere? What did you do when you got home? Mug? Down the side of a sofa cushion? We’re they in your pocket when you went to the loo? Sorry op, I know how stressed you are!

Barney16 · 02/02/2025 17:37

Right down the side of the sofa, so past the base if you see what I mean. I lost my phone down there once and had checked, just didn't shove my hand down far enough. And underneath something, they are in your house you just haven't found them yet and will do 🙂

SnakesAndArrows · 02/02/2025 17:38

If you park on the road, check on top of your tyres/under wheel arch just in case a passer by found the key and put it there for (relative) safekeeping.

Have you been anywhere on foot outside your house since you parked up?

Have you really systematically checked all bags by emptying completely and then emptying and shaking them? Speaking from experience here…

Have a sit down, empty your mind as much as you can and then re-trace your last journey home in your mind. What were you and DD wearing and carrying? Where had you been? What did you need to do as soon as you got into the house? What did you say to each other?

Definitely go through the bins again. Piece by piece into a separate bin bag. Horrible but necessary.

Simplelife1 · 02/02/2025 17:38

Not read whole thread, have you tried the fridge, I find all sorts in there when I'm flustered, good luck

Chuchoter · 02/02/2025 17:38

Check your fridge. If you came home with shopping and put the keys in the fridge and then put products in front.

I did this with a pair of sunglasses once and they turned up a couple of weeks later as the food got eaten!

rach7979 · 02/02/2025 17:41

Fridge
Freezer
Washing machine
Tumble dryer
Dishwasher
All bags
Shopping bags
Any food you put away that it could have been caught on like netting of fruit
Bookcase
Under the sofa
Down the arms of the sofa (I frequently lose my mobile here as you can get your hands under the arms)
Coat pockets
Trousers pockets
Shoes and boots
Drawers
Children's toys
Bathroom
Window sills

Sorry if this isnt your thing but you’ve nothing to lose saying the pray to st Anthony

O Holy St. Anthony gentlest of Saints, your love for God and charity for His creatures, made you worthy, when on earth, to possess miraculous powers. Encouraged by this thought, I implore you to obtain for me (request).
O gentle and loving St. Anthony, whose heart was ever full of human sympathy, whisper my petition into the ears of the sweet Infant Jesus, who loved to be folded in your arms. The gratitude of my heart will ever be yours. Amen.

idiotfacelicker · 02/02/2025 17:46

Whether they are on the same ring as your house keys is important as it will determine if they definitely made from the car to inside the house.

Did you have shopping bags, did your daughter have a school bag with her or PE kit bag? Try those. If you had shopping, where did they get put away? Try this cupboards etc. what was the first job you did when you got home, eg laundry? Try the washing machine etc etc.

Work really methodically through the entire process you went through last time you returned home with the car.

Anononony · 02/02/2025 17:47

Checked all coat pockets and pockets of any jeans etc that are waiting for washing? That's where I usually find mine!

LaurieFairyCake · 02/02/2025 17:49

Laundry bin

Put them in the fridge/bread bin

Feelingathomenow · 02/02/2025 17:57

What were you doing last time you used the car - have you checked fridge/freezer coffee jar. Were you carrying more than your handbag, did you run to the loo when you came in? Did you take DD anywhere, have you checked her pockets

Feelingathomenow · 02/02/2025 17:58

oh check with neighbours in case you left them in door and they took them in for safe keeping

TickTockPolly · 02/02/2025 18:01

Think back to when you last had them. What were you wearing/carrying/doing?

If you can be certain they are in the house then be systematic with your searching and look in places you don’t think they will be.

If the car is one you have to return after a certain period of time, I expect they will bill you if you don’t return two keys so if you really can’t find it I’d get two new ones

I voted YABU for posting such a load of word salad.

What an invaluable contribution to the thread. FFS

bouncydog · 02/02/2025 18:02

Check and feel around the lining of any bags that you had. I knew I had a purse in my handbag and it had disappeared. Colleague had a look in my bag after we had tipped everything out to be sure and found it had slipped between the lining and the outside of the bag through a small gap in the seam of the lining.

FeathersMcgraww · 02/02/2025 18:08

I once lost my phone in the house. Truly jarring as I had it in the morning and couldn’t find it by the time I was leaving for work so 100% knew it was in the house. After 10 days of no luck I bought a new one. 8 months later I picked up an old pair of trainers I never wore and it fell out of one of them. Try looking in your shoes!!

Prettypennies · 02/02/2025 18:13

In your purse? Driveway?

Friartruckster · 02/02/2025 18:17

Oh no! Where’s op? I’m strangely invested in the keys being found and being told where. I hope op hasn’t let her ADHD get the better of her - found the keys and just flowed into the next task not realising we need an update 🧐

AngelicKaty · 02/02/2025 18:19

What about the freezer @Bagladygirl ? My MIL once put her handbag in her chest freezer and only realised what she'd done a few hours later when she found a partially defrosted bag of peas next to her armchair! 😱

DriftAlong · 02/02/2025 18:23

In the fridge or washing machine.
Rooting for you that they turn up.

SaltyPig · 02/02/2025 18:29

HRTFT but mine are insured with my car insurance. Check that and your lease.

Thanks for the laugh, needed it today. St Anthony , indeed. Try Beelzebub. Wetting myself.

I've managed to lock car with keys inside with a keyless fob.

Am sure when you call the leasing company or fleet manager, they will tell you it happens ALL THE TIME.
