Spaghetti is the default pasta

RawBloomers · 26/01/2025 20:44

My DH asked me what I’d like to eat and I said pasta and pasta sauce. I was picturing spaghetti with a lovely tomato and basil sauce, generously sprinkled with black pepper and parmesan. This is also DC1’s favourite meal.

Spaghetti is the default pasta and should be assumed if no particular type of pasta is mentioned. AIBU?

He has made a mix of penne pasta and macaroni. And put sausage in the sauce. I want to pout and stamp my feet like a four year old. (I have not I have thanked him and told him how lovely he is).

There is plenty of spaghetti in the cupboard. We only have penne in because they had no spaghetti in the shop once, months ago. We only have macaroni in because DC2 likes mac&cheese and I make it - for them alone - from time to time. He made this penne/macaroni monstrosity for me and DC1 as DC2 has already eaten and he had something different. He and all right thinking people should know better, right?

Fusilli is default pasta, penne is a bit floppy and is ‘emergency pasta’. Spaghetti is spaghetti and for bolognese only. I do
like the bow ties though.

Funnywonder · 26/01/2025 21:39

Pasta is fusilli in our house. Spaghetti is spaghetti.

We also have penne, tagliatelle, linguine and conchiglie. Oh and macaroni. None of those chewy little bow shaped bastards though. DS1 and DP prefer brown, so we have wholewheat spaghetti and fusilli too. It's a wonder there's room for any other food.

Winterskyfall · 26/01/2025 21:39

Before I had to go gluten free penne or farfalle were the default pastas depending on the sauce, now it's fusilli. I definitely don't see spaghetti as default.

Penne is only floppy if you overcook it!

SheWasPureSound · 26/01/2025 21:40

Penne is the default pasta. Spaghetti is spaghetti

Saracen · 26/01/2025 21:41

I would have said YABU, the default pasta is something small and easy to eat, NOT spaghetti.

BUT. How long have you been with your DH? How has it escaped his attention that spaghetti is your favourite? Surely he should have noticed this by now.

RainingCatsandFoxes · 26/01/2025 21:41

Penne is default in this house. If you want spaghetti, ask for spaghetti? We do love our pasta sauces and my husband does do an amazing pasta sauce 😋. Mixing the pasta is weird. Doesn't it cook at different speeds?

It’s not our default pasta
Perhaps more instructions for dh next time OP 😁

Aworldofmyown · 26/01/2025 21:41

Wrong, it's fusilli

mitogoshigg · 26/01/2025 21:42

Mixing pastas is plain wrong and macaroni is for baked dishes but nothing wrong with sausage in pasta sauce.

AllProperTeaIsTheft · 26/01/2025 21:42

YABU. But on a separate issue, why do so many people call penne 'penne pasta'?! It's really weird. Nobody says 'spaghetti pasta', 'fusilli pasta' or 'macaroni pasta'!

Londonrach1 · 26/01/2025 21:42

Totally disagree... It's penne here. I think I cook spaghetti twice a year at most.

Erm I’d say it’s the other way. If her husband agreed to making** pasta, why doesn’t she know that it wouldn’t be spaghetti 😂

fingerbobz · 26/01/2025 21:43

Pasta is pasta
Spaghetti is different

I would assume pasta is penne or macaroni or the spiral one (those are the pastas we usually have)

JLou08 · 26/01/2025 21:44

YABU. Penne is default for me.

Lentilweaver · 26/01/2025 21:45

Mixing pasta is the devil's work!

soundsys · 26/01/2025 21:46

Fusilli is the default here!

If he'd given you penne and sauce he'd been entirely reasonable, but mixing macaroni in with it Confused

PointsSouth · 26/01/2025 21:47

Linguine.

And the sausage is a good improvisational addition if you're trying to avoid being deathly dull.

30 years! And spaghetti is DC1's favourite too and she's currently sick! Shock

He is a monster.

Lemon1111 · 26/01/2025 21:48

Fusili is the default pasta 🙂

Edited

It normally is spaghetti. I don't know why it's different today. 😥

Alliteration. It's irresistible.

Spaghetti isn't the default pasta, but it is pasta. Not sure why people are implying spaghetti and pasta are two separate things! If I said we were going to have e.g. pasta and tomato sauce, I'd be just as likely to make spaghetti as any other kind of pasta I had in the cupboard.

Also, tomato sauce is even better with sausage in it!

TENSsion · 26/01/2025 21:53

Spaghetti is for carbonara.
Tagliatelle is for bolognaise.

I’d never eat penne carbonara.

There is no default pasta. It depends on the sauce.
