Spaghetti is the default pasta

RawBloomers · 26/01/2025 20:44

My DH asked me what I’d like to eat and I said pasta and pasta sauce. I was picturing spaghetti with a lovely tomato and basil sauce, generously sprinkled with black pepper and parmesan. This is also DC1’s favourite meal.

Spaghetti is the default pasta and should be assumed if no particular type of pasta is mentioned. AIBU?

He has made a mix of penne pasta and macaroni. And put sausage in the sauce. I want to pout and stamp my feet like a four year old. (I have not I have thanked him and told him how lovely he is).

There is plenty of spaghetti in the cupboard. We only have penne in because they had no spaghetti in the shop once, months ago. We only have macaroni in because DC2 likes mac&cheese and I make it - for them alone - from time to time. He made this penne/macaroni monstrosity for me and DC1 as DC2 has already eaten and he had something different. He and all right thinking people should know better, right?

It normally is spaghetti. I don't know why it's different today. 😥

Do you normally just say pasta though? Did you even have spaghetti in?? Seems really odd you’d ever think spaghetti is called pasta, sorry! Maybe it’s an ick your husband has and he’s trying to stop you 😂

ForeverinBJ · 26/01/2025 21:54

Spaghetti is spaghetti
Pasta is penne or fusilli or the spiral one whose name escapes me !

Topbird29 · 26/01/2025 21:55

I must be weird - spirali is preferred here! And we will mix pasta if have 2 end of bags to be used up. Or rigatoni and macaroni together, as it amuses us to find macaroni inside giant macaroni.

Spaghetti is for carbonara.
Tagliatelle is for bolognaise.

I’d never eat penne carbonara.

There is no default pasta. It depends on the sauce.

And trofie is for pesto only.

ElleintheWoods · 26/01/2025 21:57

I don't think there is a default pasta in all fairness :)

HOWEVER I've not had spaghetti in the house since I was a child. If I buy pasta it's got to be penne, fusili or nice fresh egg tagliatelle.

RawBloomers · 26/01/2025 21:58

GrumpyInsomniac · 26/01/2025 20:50

No. In our house if you ask for pasta you’re likely to get penne or fusilli or conchiglie. If you want spaghetti you ask for spaghetti. I don’t make the rules, that’s just how my husband and son work, so I’ve learned to communicate my preferences clearly.

Both DH and DS default to anything but spaghetti because they both have beards and don’t like picking sauce out of their beards after dinner, which I think explains the problem in our house. Could this be why your DH defaults to pasta shapes?

But your DH is being unreasonable to mix pasta shapes.

No beard. He always used to eat spaghetti, but has had to give up pasta entirely for health reasons (even though he loves it - and yes, I'm aware that makes his cooking it for me even more of a lovely thing!)

I always call it pasta - it is pasta! And yes, we have it in. More of it than penne or macaroni (especially now!).

To throw a bit of a spanner in the works, my DH (who does all of our cooking) will always use the ‘proper’ pasta for the particular sauce he’s cooking. So there wouldn’t really be a default pasta, it depends on the sauce.

Coloursofthewind2 · 26/01/2025 22:01

Fusilli is default in our house in a tomato sauce. Spaghetti is referred to as spaghetti not pasta. Same goes for lasagne. Penne/fusilli/shells are all just called pasta.

Macaroni has never been used with anything but a cheese sauce.

Mixing pasta types is very strange.

gotmyknickersinatwist · 26/01/2025 22:01

I disagree that spaghetti is the default pasta, I think if you want spaghetti you should specify spaghetti gimme linguini any day but it irrationally annoys me when someone asks 'do you want spaghetti or pasta?' and I have to stop myself from saying 'spaghetti IS fucking pasta!!'

RawBloomers · 26/01/2025 22:02

AllProperTeaIsTheft · 26/01/2025 21:50

Spaghetti isn't the default pasta, but it is pasta. Not sure why people are implying spaghetti and pasta are two separate things! If I said we were going to have e.g. pasta and tomato sauce, I'd be just as likely to make spaghetti as any other kind of pasta I had in the cupboard.

Also, tomato sauce is even better with sausage in it!

We were getting on okayish until your last sentence.

It is a type of pasta but it’s so different to the other types that no one calls it that if that’s what they want!!

ThatEllie · 26/01/2025 22:04

It’s definitely penne. I love rigatoni too but it’s too big for my mouth so I’ll often use that mezzi rigatoni that’s shorter. And- hear me out- ditalini for macaroni cheese.

Fusilli has me baffled though. I had to look up which one it was; I’ve only ever seen it used in cold pasta salad type things. And I’m no stranger to Italian restaurants! 😂

CrowleyKitten · 26/01/2025 22:05

Spaghetti or Tagliatelle for Bolognese or Carbonara type dishes.

my preferred small pasta shape is conchiglie. especially in soups or stews.

BunnyLake · 26/01/2025 22:05

WhatWouldTheDoctorDo · 26/01/2025 21:39

Fusilli is default pasta, penne is a bit floppy and is ‘emergency pasta’. Spaghetti is spaghetti and for bolognese only. I do
like the bow ties though.

Spaghetti is my default for marinara sauce, bolognese, carbonara and pesto, (oh and chilli prawn pasta).

OperationalSupport · 26/01/2025 22:06

Spaghetti is always called spaghetti (but I actually buy linguine because I think it’s nicer) and only served with bolognese.
Default pasta in my house is spirali.
We also have penne, fusilli, farfalle, some Halloween shapes, possibly some tricoloured zoo shapes, tiny stars that go in soups, and some fancy ones from a special pasta shop. We love pasta.

If you ask for pasta and sauce here you will get spirali in tomato and basil sauce, with the option of grated cheese on top.

Hankunamatata · 26/01/2025 22:06

Don't particularly like spaghetti. It's always penne, fusili or tagliatelle if I'm doing bolognese.

Honestandkind · 26/01/2025 22:07

Sparklfairy · 26/01/2025 20:46

I was about to say 'pasta is pasta' but somehow I have recoiled at the thought of mixing pasta types Shock

This set me back a mile too, I just didn't see it coming

Oh my god it looks like dried maggots

Gowlett · 26/01/2025 22:07

Spaghetti is always spaghetti.
Pasta is all of the other ones.

It's not if you snap it in half.

You have a million Italian curses on your head if you do that!

Do they make it in half sizes then?

YourWinter · 26/01/2025 22:09

Penne or fusilli for the win, spaghetti is horrific.

BottomWibblyWob · 26/01/2025 22:10

Rigatoni in this house!
