To want to go in my garden without my neighbours being intrusive

As soon as the neighbours spot either of us put in either our front or back garden they mysteriously need to come outside for a wander and then just have to interrupt us.

I get their world is small but I just want to be left alone to do what I need to.

It is ruining any enjoyment I could potentially have if I ever actually got to use my garden instead of avoiding being out there at all.

I need to tidy up after the high winds. Managed to be out for 10 minutes max before they appeared so I've come in for a cuppa.

Sad

Big headphones. Tap them and say I can’t hear you. Have a great afternoon etc and then get on with relaxing, garden jobs

itsjustbiology · 29/01/2025 13:56

Op can you take a radio out into the garden and just not hear them if you get my drift ? Or would you still have to see them? If not the best i can do is a huge gazebo which blocks their view..facebook market place is best for one of those. Or a squeaky trampoline could put them off maybe? Hot tub? dunno ..its crap though. You might have to be rude in the end.."oh its you ..we were just talking about how long it would be before you arrived"" Sorry lovely I hope you get it sorted x

itsjustbiology · 29/01/2025 14:01

Can you and dh have a massive row? Total slanging match (made up of course with lots of effing and jeffing) the louder the better when they appear say oh god dont you start (as aggressive as possible) I am so not on the effing mood to deal with you as well,,this could end all relations permenantly!
Trying to help but failing miserably sorry!

I understand OP, it's not the chat it's the fact that they are always coming out everytime you are in the garden. Every single time! I have a retired neighbour, shared party wall which are thin, he will follow me round my house when I wfh. So I'm upstairs working in bedroom he is the bedroom opposite to mine, I go down for lunch he goes down for lunch and so on. As I said thin walls can hear sneezing, floorboards creaking so it's obvious. In the evenings if I'm on the phone (and I now talk quietly) he will turn his tv down as soon as I'm off the tv volume goes back up...coincidence no I don't think so. Fucking creepy, why do you want to hear my conversation 😒

On the otherside my neighbours always looking out the window if I'm in my garden, what am I doing, or leaving my house at the front. Caught them so many times looking and then suddenly stepping back from the window.

I feel like I live in Truman show constantly being watched 👀

That's beyond normal. I've enjoyed chuckling at some posts but yours is unsettling. Can you afford acoustic panelling?

I know, bit stuck for now as it's just me and my salary and soundproofing is an option but not right now. Thankfully I'm enjoying being back in the office and rather spend my.money going on multiple holidays so I'm not at home much now a days so it's something I can live with but those few yrs covid and post covid were hard to deal with.

Whilst.my other neighbours still look out their windows I've decided to just ignore it, they are clearly not happy with their own life if they need to be following mine lol

It's why I can understand how OP feels it's just so icky.

MillicentByst4nder · 29/01/2025 14:16

OP I had a similar issue with a female neighbour, which was thankfully resolved by us falling out 😄

Getting in and out of the house without her noticing and wanting to chat for 40 minutes became a bit of a mission. If I arrived home and saw her outside my heart would sink. She even appeared at my kitchen door a few times, tapping on the glass. She only ever wanted to gossip and is probably the dullest person, with the dreariest voice, I've ever had the misfortune to meet.

The garden wasn't safe either, as she'd regularly appear, droning on and on. But then we fell out, which I felt bad about initially, but soon started to appreciate the consequences of that included her not talking to me. So although it's not nice to fall out with people, I wouldn't turn the clock back even if I could. I'm thoroughly enjoying being ignored.

@Spectre8 Crikey. I'd have background music on as much as I could possibly tolerate it, I think. Also look at getting some soundproofing - not that you should have to, of course!

They complain about your washing?? that will be the peek a boo bras and crotchless knickers. How disgusting hanging that out in view! But by all means hang out the bondage gear, leather 😁masks get quite sweaty so I'm told

Oh yes, I do hang out a few items that I specifically bought just for them 🤣 I hang them on the end of the line close to their lounge window 🤣🤣

Thanks, I don't have music on but floorboards make noise so hard to stop that. To be honest I'm 20 yrs away from retiring and whilst I have my health rather spend my money travelling a much as I can cos when I retire I have that time to spend st home. I'll be downsizing and getting a detached house which at least guarantees no noise and creepy behaviour. Soundproofing isn't guaranteed to always work as well as a detached house.

Just give one word awnsers and always be busy with something!

Headphones. You don't even have to be listening to anything. But you can pretend not to notice your neighbours when you aren't looking at them, and if you look up at catch their eye, you just shout "listening to a book, it's great!" (you have to shout so they think you're talking over the voice in your ears).

Then just carry on doing what you're doing.

EXCELLENT tip 🎯😂😂😂

The cold weather is assisting, by the time they get wrapped up I'm back inside 🤣

Anyhow DH shared this on the Family Chat 😂😂😂

Yanbu.
I would hate such intrusive behaviour.
When I moved into my house 25 years ago, the first thing out of the neighbours mouth next door, was she would love OUR 10 ft hedge to be replaced by a wall.

I told her very sweetly and very firmly that the 10ft hedge surrounding our house, was a key reason we bought the house.
We LOVE our privacy.

No more discussion was had about it.
I would go mad living with what you describe.

Love this, shared it with my dd in America, as she has met our nosy neighbour and couldn't believe how intrusive he is. peering over the fence whilst standing on a breeze block because he heard us talking to the other neighbours.😅
He sounds very similar to OPs, talks at you but doesn't listen to what you are saying, extreme but you get the gist.
"My head fell off yesterday and I'm still looking for it Rodney,"
"I'll help if you want, what do you think about our neighbour having that work done on his garage? Wonder how he can afford it, blah, blah."
We do the hide and run game like the OP, great fun😃

RandomMess · 14/05/2025 20:34

@TheGreyQuail 😂😂😂😂

We’ve got scaffolding up, I’m waiting for the grilling on what we are having done & why!

There was much excitement when one of our cats got trapped in their garage.

Moving a item of furniture tomorrow morning that is currently in the back of the car and bringing it into the house.

We are doing it at 5am to avoid the "watching" but somehow, i think we will still get caught and questioned 😆

Eldermillennialmum · 14/05/2025 21:58

Say you've got to run as you've left something on the cooker or something Mike that and then run off. Surely they'll get the hint?!

RandomMess · 14/05/2025 22:47

@SplendidUtterly🤣 I managed to sell a car whilst they were out for the day, how long before they ask where it is!
