To hate wide leg trousers

Thomasina79 · 25/01/2025 11:17

first world problem I know!

I wore flared trousers first time round and swore I never would again! To me the wide legs look ugly, buy each to their own!

They're opinions! No one is being personally insulted, in fact many have said "that style works for xyz but not for me" Jesus I just found out Skinny Jeans were out but are coming back in 😆I've only ever worn skinny jeans so it was quite the revelation... not everything is pitching women about women

How is ‘noone looks good in them’ not personally insulting?

TheNinjaWife · 26/01/2025 10:48

I’m just over 5ft 4, but I have very long legs for my height (33 cm inside leg). I think they make me look bigger than I am, because I have bigger boobs and narrow hips. The worst thing about wide leg trousers for me is they dictate your footwear. With skinny jeans you can literally wear anything. And like another poster mentioned I trip up in them. They also suck up water when it rains.

But you know that's rubbish? Many people do.. Christ take a look at your colleagues or people on the bus/road.. I could never pull off some of that shit, not everyone suits wide legged trousers.. god knows I don't, stop looking to be insulted

I'll defer back to my beloved skinny jeans (ripped most likely for me) they're out.. I had no idea, does it matter? No! I dress for myself, no one is personally insulting anyone on this thread

We’ll have to agree to disagree.

Why do you have to wait for something to come back into fashion? Just wear what you like. It's called being an individual.

CeeJay81 · 26/01/2025 11:40

They look terrible on me, as I'm short and pear shaped due to a big bum and small top half. Leggings and skinny jeans all the way for me. Any other trousers look awful and often don't fit my bum unless they're high waisted. I wear what looks flattering rather than what's in fashion these days.

Scorchio84 · 26/01/2025 11:46

@PigInAHouse I'm not the only one who's saying similar, so yes for you I think it's the right course of action, no one needs the drama over items of clothing

Rubyupbeat · 26/01/2025 12:00

I love them, 2nd time round for me at 60.
I am 6ft (although think I've lost an inch) and 34 inch inside leg.
Main reason I like them is that I have a condition that swells my lower legs, wide legs give them a cover up and don't cling at them.

Really hard to get good wide leg jeans for a good few years and lots were really high waisted (levi ribcage). I prefer a midrise. So unless you kept them from last time it was tricky. Smarter wide leg trousers have been a bit easier to get from the high street.

Scorchio84 · 26/01/2025 12:16

Oh man @mewkins "Levi Ribcage" my sister & her friends wore this style... what a flashback! & with a belt too 😆

BringMeTea · 26/01/2025 12:33

I love them. Always worn them though. I am tall but think all sizes can pull them off. Agree re the Katherine Hepburn vibe.

RaraRachael · 26/01/2025 13:42

What are "barrel" style that people are mentioning?

Each to their own. I have thin legs so skinny are fine for me.
I HATE wearing tops tucked into anything so if that's the style with wide leg trousers I'll be avoiding them.

I hate them, can’t wait for skinny jeans and leggings to go back in fashion. I do still wear leggings tbh. My legs get cold in wide legged trousers

I life wide legged when it's cold as I can wear thick thermal knee length socks underneath

chargeitup · 26/01/2025 14:09

spacepies · 25/01/2025 15:30

i still wear leggings and oversized jumpers.
Or jogging bottoms.
I dont care whats in or whats out as long as im happy with what im wearing.
I dont like to follow trends or blend in i like being me.
Why blend in when i can stand out.

I dint think jogging bottoms are going to make anyone stand out 🤣

Shopgirl1 · 26/01/2025 14:15

I don’t love them. I’m 6ft and the right pair looks good on me, but it’s hard to find them long enough and also I find them harder to match shoes with. I also don’t feel as good in them as in something slimmer fitting.

lazyarse123 · 26/01/2025 14:30

I'm short, I was 5ft 4 but I've shrunk (unfortunately only height wise). And very overweight but I gave them a try because my legs are huge and lumpy. They are actually very flattering even dh said "those suit you" and he never comments. I now have 6 pairs absolutely love them.
Probably don't look that good to others but I feel nice.

PainthewholeworldwithaRainbow · 26/01/2025 14:40

They are not like 1970s flares . Fashion dies repeat itself but comes back with a twist

FartyAnimal · 26/01/2025 14:42

I'm 5 foot and love them. Either in petite or shortened!

PontiacFirebird · 26/01/2025 14:44

Ah, I always want to look good in them, when I see them in the shops I think “ oh I’ll look like Katherine Hepburn, crisp white shirt, slouchy and elegant”.
In reality I look like I’m wearing my fat grandads allotment clothes. In truth I have seen VERY few women looking good in wide legs. I think they have to be really excellent fabric and cut- you can’t skimp on those.
Bootcut are the best, then straight and Boyfriend Jeans.

Porcelainpig · 26/01/2025 14:49

I used to wear these in the late 90s/early 00s. Not a chance now. I used to basucally drink puddles through my jeans.

I'm 5ft 3 and they do nothing for me. I'm not overweight but I am short legged. A lot are very wide legged combats too and I would look like a bag lady in them now that I'm in my 40s.

CalmConfident · 26/01/2025 15:06

Another short arse who LoVEs wide leg, M&S short length are perfect

suburburban · 26/01/2025 18:03

Yes I'm not long in the leg but I think they look ok on me or perhaps I'm deluded

Bootcut look shite on me. They make thighs look enormous

barrel leg

I love them. Love. I wear mine all the time. It's just the reverse of a baggy top, skinny bottom - also to people slagging them off, not everything has to be "flattering". Some of us like to wear interesting silhouettes.
