First we get that alarm, now Tesco is closed tomorrow. It's the end, isn't it?

I’ve never had an alert thingy. So does that mean I’ll live forever? 😆

Scotland and NI got a weather warning alarm on their phones I believe

Yes ..I was snoozing in my chair and got the fright of my life!

Ivyiris · 23/01/2025 22:30

Think the alarm on went off to people in the red weather warning zone. Pray for us lol. Seriously though building work next door with unsecure rubble is causing me some worry for my windows

ScarlettSunset · 23/01/2025 22:27

I've never had the alert on my phone. Not even when they did the test one as I was in that group that it didn't work for.
I'm not sure if I'm one of those that's considered expendable or one of those that's been chosen to survive the apocalypse and so either way doesn't need a warning...

Snap. I felt quite left out last time. This time I'm more worried as my dd is right in the red zone and my other kids are abroad.

So far tomorrow

Buses are off
Trains are off
Schools are closed
Hospital appts are cancelled.
Tesco & M&S are closed
No Post Office or DPD deliveries
All local businesses are closed
Doctors are closed

But I do still fully expect to wake up as usual on Saturday

last time this happened to us in Jersey during Storm Ciaran , the whole island shut down. Courts, schools, work places, busses, everything. We had a tornado and people lost their homes. You will probably be fine, and I really hope you are, but people need to take this seriously

ScarletWitchM · 23/01/2025 22:31

WhineAndWine1 · 23/01/2025 22:17

They have sent an email advising they are closing and re opening once the red warning has been lifted

Nope - I asked in my local Sainsbury’s and Tesco and they are staying open tomorrow not sure why they would be closed anyway

1nutcracker · 23/01/2025 22:32

IAmADescendantOfSweepTheSqueakyLegend · 23/01/2025 22:29

Soz. Who got it then?

Most of Scotland. All in the central belt. All the M&S near me are closing, as are Tesco and most local businesses. All trains and buses in Scotland off after 10am.

We did and I nearly shat myself. The cats were in a blind panic!!

WickedGoodDoge · 23/01/2025 22:32

I was in Morrisons when the alarm went off. Their card payment system had just gone down and it was utter chaos so the multiple simultaneous alarms going off on everyone’s phones was just an annoying blip for us all

Kimmeridge · 23/01/2025 22:33

ScarletWitchM · 23/01/2025 22:31

Presumably you're not in a red alert area then?

DreamW3aver · 23/01/2025 22:33

IAmADescendantOfSweepTheSqueakyLegend · 23/01/2025 22:29

Soz. Who got it then?

At the risk of staying the obvious, people who are in the areas likely to be worst affected

Why would they warn everyone else?

AInightingale · 23/01/2025 22:34

I am in the red zone and my local Tesco was insane this evening.

One woman had one of those large trollies packed with about 12 two litre cartons of milk and about fifteen loaves of bread. Okay, she may have been stocking up for an old people's home or something, but no wonder the shelves were empty.

But on the whole, people seemed to be buying pizzas and lots and lots of alcohol.

Pancakeflipper · 23/01/2025 22:35

Big coat weather.

Good luck transport, buildings, fences, trampolines, etc

Stay safe all of you in the high risk windy storm.areas.

I googled Tesco and now I know that papaya is the fastest growing (in popularity) fruit in the UK. I don't think that's why they're closed though.

Papaya is so overrated? Just watery mushy nothingness. Why would anyone buy it? Sorry for derail, feel quite strongly about papaya.

Thank you! Somebody who has experienced this hysteria Our Tesco is out of loo roll and was offensively busy. I am not joking. For a day!?

what happned

Namechange4840 · 23/01/2025 22:37

Yes OP alarm scared the bajeez out of me im based in ni. Wind speeds of 100 in my area I do think thats pretty bad to be fair most seem about 70 but im right by the coast. All schools closed no transport and shops in my area. Stay indoors not safe if trees fall or trampolines go flying etc its already picking up here. I think its ridiculous they are making ppl to go work if not needed my work has also been closed!

Phthia · 23/01/2025 22:37

Stormwhatnow · 23/01/2025 22:10

This alert. I'm expected at work Confused

I hope you don't have to drive?

HangryLikeTheHulk · 23/01/2025 22:38

I already died this afternoon. Might do it again tomorrow.

My friend's cat was lying asleep right next to the phone when the alarm went off. Apparently she opened one eye 😁

Midnightlove · 23/01/2025 22:40

Where abouts are you?

I just hope I don't lose the roof! Or the trampoline doesn't smash through my neighbour window 😬 some schools are closed near me, but nothing about my sons school yet. We're only in amber here though, but near the red

FunnysInLaJardin · 23/01/2025 22:41

WinterBones · 23/01/2025 22:28

What part of 'red warning' and '100mph+ hurricane force winds expected' do you think doesn't need making a fuss of?

By all means, go out.. but mind you dont get hit by falling trees and flying debris.

Having been hit by a T6 tornado in 2023 I think everyone should take this properly seriously and not try to minimise.

These events are destructive and terrifying

Phthia · 23/01/2025 22:41

Skibadeedoo · 23/01/2025 22:24

That’s fascinating! I can honestly say I’ve never seen anyone whip out a papaya and start chomping on it. Who are the people that are buying them now that weren’t before? So many questions

I lived in Africa as a child and we used to have it regularly for breakfast. Happy days.

Biffsboys · 23/01/2025 22:41

I’m in a red area , the alarm came when I was out with the dog in the dark 😱
I’ve not been to Tesco - I have enough wine and snacks to see me through to Saturday…
I’m just praying for my fence .
