First we get that alarm, now Tesco is closed tomorrow. It's the end, isn't it?

Until you have lived through a proper fuck off 200 mile tornado or 100 mph storm you won't know how it feels.

Keep being glib people, let me know how it feels tomorrow.

I hope you are ok, and sorry for those who are genuinely scared. It is honestly terrifying

I've lived through a tornado in the USA and am now in the centre of the red zone, with two dogs, on a hill above an exposed coastline facing west towards the Atlantic. It is actually a bit unnerving for people around here. Was on public transport earlier, everyone's phone rang at intervals over the space of thirty minutes or so.

Gowlett · 23/01/2025 22:59

Some people will die in this storm.

Kimmeridge · 23/01/2025 22:59

I think the worst cancellation notice I've seen is the one saying cemeteries & crematoriums are closed tomorrow. How devastating for those families

Combustivechicken · 23/01/2025 23:00

Papaya is so overrated? Just watery mushy nothingness. Why would anyone buy it? Sorry for derail, feel quite strongly about papaya

I was given papaya by a neighbour about 30 years ago. I’d never even heard of it. She lived in various African countries for a lot of her childhood where it was an everyday food. She squeezed lime juice all over it and it was absolutely delicious. On its own it tastes bland but the lime juice completely transforms it.

Regarding weather alarm I didn’t get one but am in Yorkshire which is Amber alert. Am also with a network that uses 3 so my phone has been down since about 2pm. Stay safe everyone.

True, we shouldn’t be laughing, stay safe everyone

YourAzureEagle · 23/01/2025 23:01

We are putting scaffolding up the side of a three storey building in the morning, absolutely no plans to cancel, it will have to be really bad to stop it happening! hard hat and hi viz raincoat ready!

Some people will die in this storm.

I do hope not. Please stay as safe as you can if you're in affected areas.

I've just checked historic records. The great storm of 1953 killed 2,551 people. They probably could have done with some sort of warning.

60+ of them drowned in their beds on Canvey Island in Essex. Really frightening! They’re rebuilding the sea wall there now for the third or fourth time. I’m not sure if that inspires confidence or not.

Why on earth is Tesco closed?

In northern Ireland due to red weather warning

BarbaraHoward · 23/01/2025 23:03

Cynic17 · 23/01/2025 22:42

Of course we're all going to die - nobody lives forever.
However, all this fuss about a storm is ridiculous. We live on an island. It gets windy. This has been happening for centuries. But now we infantilise people by telling them to stay at home and giving storms names. It's nonsense.

In NI it's expected to be the worst storm since 1998. In Ireland it may be the worst on record.

If we all carried on as normal tomorrow, quite a few people would die. If as many of us as possible stay home, that won't happen and hopefully the damage will be limited to power cuts, damaged houses and blocked roads. I'm glad we're forewarned.

no, only yellow! probably wouldn't bother in red

On a minor side note with winds of 100mph expected my neighbour's bins are already blowing rubbish all over my garden and drive I really want to say to them please put something on top or face them against the fence like mine as the fence shields from the strong gusts. Is it bad im annoyed she will leave me to pick up her bin rubbish as usual

Edited

This is the exact same scenario I will be facing tomorrow, so on top of worrying about my roof and sheds , I have to worry about my neighbours rubbish and clutter blowing everywhere, they also have an unsecured trampoline which I am hoping and praying does not blow into my car or windows.
Some people are bone idle lazy , we have been out today packing everything away and tying stuff up , weighting things down and these lazy sods do zero prep.

Kimmeridge · 23/01/2025 23:04

YourAzureEagle · 23/01/2025 23:03

So really not comparible. We'd all be going to work and everything would be open if we were in a yellow zone.

noodlezoodle · 23/01/2025 23:04

The alarms themselves make you jump, and it is very scary for people in the red zone, this is not 'normal' UK weather.

Spare a thought for the poor people of Hawaii who once received one of those alerts telling them a missile was incoming (it wasn't). en.wikipedia.org/wiki/2018_Hawaii_false_missile_alert

That's an absolutely terrible idea if you're in an amber area. And if you're in a red one...don't be fucking stupid.

A number of the smaller companies piggyback 3 and they are all down. We are with ID Mobile and we are affected.

I am so confused, I am with ID mobile and don't think I have been affected today at all.

FFS. Is this life now?? Everything is weaponised now, even the bastard weather which has ALWAYS been crap in this country. It's winter and yes, sometimes storms and bad things happen. They always have. Check historic records. I wish people would take no notice of this bollocks and just get on with their lives and stop acting like meerkats, bobbing about looking for the next thing to panic about. I think some people just enjoy the drama tbh.

Meerkat Lookout GIF by Nat Geo Wild

LOL at the meerkats comments!!! 😂I do agree with you though.

Crazy OTT behaviour from some. It's just weather. (And we have had worse before, although I know it is better and safer for people if they stay at home if they can, or at least indoors - if they can! Especially in the Red and Amber Warning areas.)

But at the end of the day, the media and news don't help by catastrophising this type of shit!

.

If Tesco is shut then we’re all finished because obviously we can’t go a day without it.

I’m more positive. If Tesco closes then there’s hope for all the smaller independent butchers, greengrocers, florists and clothes shops on high streets across the country.

Ah…I’ve just realised it’s only for a day. I wish they’d close for ever 🤣
