To tell my sister she's mad for naming her daughter this?

First baby. The name is a word. A word you would use to describe a very pleasurable feeling. No, not orgasm, before anyone says it!

It's absurd and I think someone should tell her. AIBU to say 'sorry, but it's ridiculous. You need to choose something else'.

My mum is all very supportive and says 'well, sometimes we don't like names. Then can't imagine them as anything else'

I think this is an exception.

May as well tell you the name actually, as my sister isn't going to be on MN! The name is Euphoria

She wants to call her Ewie for short, the nickname our late dad went by (he was an Ewan)

Aw leave baby ‘bursting on a pee then finally reaching a toilet feeling’ alone. It’s a lovely name.

euphoria, a hard no from me. But her baby I suppose!

ForPearlNewt · 23/01/2025 20:20

I quite like it. 🤷‍♂️

ToKittyornottoKitty · 23/01/2025 20:21

Yeah YABU to think you can inform her ‘you need to choose something else’. No matter how stupid the name is it’s not your baby, not your choice. Try supporting your sister instead

WillimNot · 23/01/2025 20:21

Oh god no. Has she been watching too much Towie or other chavvy programme?

That is truly bad. My cousin called her DD a ridiculous name (can't say, too outing), suffice to say the chips is now an adult and has changed it and has not spoken to my cousin for quite some time.

Arlanymor · 23/01/2025 20:21

I think your mum is right.

Does someone in towie have a baby called euphoria??

Didimum · 23/01/2025 20:23

I don’t like the name, but it’s not as bizarre as you make out. Leave them alone.

FabuIous · 23/01/2025 20:23

The meaning isn’t an issue in itself I guess, given Joy or Bliss are established names.

Dramatic · 23/01/2025 20:24

It's a terrible name, I'd make my feelings clear if it was my sister. Actually if my sister said she was calling her child this I'd laugh in her face

AlmostAJillSandwich · 23/01/2025 20:25

YABU.
Its her personal nod to your dad, and a cute nickname.

Bamboogie · 23/01/2025 20:26

I like it, especially with the nod to your father as a nn.

Both my kids have word-name names though, so I definitely lean that way.

PrincessOfPreschool · 23/01/2025 20:27

I know a child called LaRose.

I prefer Euphoria by a distance she the nickname is very cute, with a lovely family connection. It's genuinely not awful. But she could go with other Eu names like Eustacia and... Can't think of anything...

What about supporting the baby?! Who has no say in her future ridiculous name.

WhatMothersDo22 · 23/01/2025 20:27

I can’t hear the word ‘Euphoria’ without singing the Swedish Eurovision song in my head!

That might put her off…

AdoraBell · 23/01/2025 20:27

Personally I would leave her to it.

That said, I saw a TV programme today with a family. DC were called Blayze and Ember. The young one looked extremely angry whenever her name was spoken.

HotCrossBunplease · 23/01/2025 20:28

She could try Euphemia, which is an actual name. Though it does sound a bit like “Euphemism”!

WillimNot · 23/01/2025 20:28

They've probably got names on a par with it.

The one that got me was Molly Mae calling her DD Bambi. Jesus

twoshedsjackson · 23/01/2025 20:28

Never mind Ewie for short, has she considered that her little chums might go for Eww?
Children can be brutal.

Lampzade · 23/01/2025 20:28

Your Dsis needs to give her daughter a classic simple middle name if she is set on using that ridiculous name. At least this would give the child an alternative
David Bowie named his son Zowie Bowie if my memory serves me correctly . However , his son uses an alternative name

That’s because she was quietly burning.

Itiswhysofew · 23/01/2025 20:29

Teachers are gonna have a right laugh at that one 🤣

Bournetilly · 23/01/2025 20:29

There are so many worse names, I think you should stay out of it. I like Ewie it’s cute.

HotCrossBunplease · 23/01/2025 20:29

Euphool?

ToKittyornottoKitty · 23/01/2025 20:29

It isn’t the OPs baby.

Ponoka7 · 23/01/2025 20:30

I like the nickname, including Ria later on. I mix in African circles, though, so these names don't seem strange to me.
