To tell my sister she's mad for naming her daughter this?

First baby. The name is a word. A word you would use to describe a very pleasurable feeling. No, not orgasm, before anyone says it!

It's absurd and I think someone should tell her. AIBU to say 'sorry, but it's ridiculous. You need to choose something else'.

My mum is all very supportive and says 'well, sometimes we don't like names. Then can't imagine them as anything else'

I think this is an exception.

May as well tell you the name actually, as my sister isn't going to be on MN! The name is Euphoria

She wants to call her Ewie for short, the nickname our late dad went by (he was an Ewan)

It's awful. It's all very well saying leave her to it and don't rock the boat but what about the poor child being landed with a shit name! 🤷‍♀️ can you speak to the father first and find out what he thinks? Maybe he could persuade her to change her mind?
I think you and your mum need to be a united front on this hold an intervention 🙈

HipToTheHopDontStop · 23/01/2025 20:35

No she couldn't.. because it's still pronounced Eva.

I know how it’s pronounced but the nickname could be a play on the spelling. Better than saddling the poor girl with a name like Euphoria.

Bigcat25 · 23/01/2025 20:59

PrincessOfPreschool · 23/01/2025 20:27

I know a child called LaRose.

I prefer Euphoria by a distance she the nickname is very cute, with a lovely family connection. It's genuinely not awful. But she could go with other Eu names like Eustacia and... Can't think of anything...

Eugenie/Eugenia, Evgenia - same nickname or Genia as nickname.

Personally I would leave her to it.

That said, I saw a TV programme today with a family. DC were called Blayze and Ember. The young one looked extremely angry whenever her name was spoken.

These sound like Pony names. ''Blayze bucked Jennie off today, but Ember was good as gold and won a Red Rosette

To tell my sister she's mad for naming her daughter this?
Echobelly · 23/01/2025 20:59

I don't think it's that awful, TBH. Certainly much better than 'Orgasm'.

CowBuoy · 23/01/2025 20:44

Ewe have a point

😂😄

RedHelenB · 23/01/2025 21:00

Hard for the poor bairn to learn to spell.

FindusMakesPancakes · 23/01/2025 21:00

Poor kid. Having an aunt so willing to mock her name from birth.

At least the sister isn't a sheep, calling her child something in the top ten.

Something in the top 10 would be much nicer!

No point in bleating on about it I suppose...

twoshedsjackson · 23/01/2025 20:28

Never mind Ewie for short, has she considered that her little chums might go for Eww?
Children can be brutal.

This would be my worry tbh.

Gerwurtztraminer · 23/01/2025 21:01

ThinWomansBrain · 23/01/2025 20:48

No offence, but Ewie sounds worse

I agree, the nickname is actually worse! Who wants to be called "You-ee". Imagine being called that from a distance - it's like yelling out "You hoo" but a bit wrong. And written down it looks like a sheep.

OP all you can do is say "I'm not keen on it but you're the parents" if she asks your opinion. Say nothing if she doesn't ask what you think. Or you could gently see what her husband thinks - surely he's got some say in the baby name too.

TheAirfryerQueen · 23/01/2025 21:01

I have to admit, I aniggered.

Orangeoranges42 · 23/01/2025 21:02

I like that you were honest and said the name- you win on this point alone.

also, yes it’s not a great name, depending where you live perhaps in a big city it might be ok but it would be a no from me.

lettingsitallbeagain · 23/01/2025 20:43

Her ex boyfriend died from water intoxication caused by MDMA at a Basildon nightclub Confused

He was a right idiot. Loveable but an idiot.

This is building a picture of your sister. Her choice in men and her choice in baby names. Poor kid. You should choose their name with many different careers in mind, a judge, a plumber an actor, and think if it works for all three. This fails the test and will be one of the sort of names people pass over cvs over because it sounds trashy and thick.

Howdoidoit100 · 23/01/2025 21:02

I know a Euphoria. Her parents call her 'Four-eee' for short

The child is about 10 now. I did raise an eyebrow at first but it's really grown on me.

LikeWhoUsesTypewritersAnyway · 23/01/2025 20:54

Hideous. Euphoria FFS! Hmm

And Ewie sounds like someone is heaving - like they want to be sick.

Spewie Ewie

We had a dog that I once made sick by mimicking the sound a vomiting dog makes..It was astonishing..

I was telling a friend about a car journey we'd done, that was a bit winding, and that I'd heard the ''Hwalp..Hwalp...Hwalp..'' from the back ..

Friend pointed to the dog and said ''You are making her sick now..and sure enough, she did a little sick there and then.

She was a lovely dog, but very attuned to her humans.

ClairDeLaLune · 23/01/2025 21:04

Oh my God that’s awful. Ewwww for short?

If she likes that sound Eugenie would be better.

schoolsoutforever · 23/01/2025 21:06

I like it. Not that different from Euphemia really in sound and lovely link to your dad. I've taught kids with all sorts of weird and wonderful names over the years and I really like something a bit different rather than yet another Chloe/Ruby/Jack/Oliver.

BarkPench · 23/01/2025 21:07

Euphoria isn’t a great pick. in medical terms it is linked to drug side effects or manic states (if not linked to happy events). If it’s a tribute to a Ewan, which (I think) means Yew tree then Yvette or Yvonne are the feminine forms of Yew in French.
Could you come at this that the made up name isn’t close enough to really be a tribute name?

Thomasina79 · 23/01/2025 21:07

I don’t like it either, but it’s not so different from the name Euphemia, liked in Victorian times.

BarkPench · 23/01/2025 21:08

Ewie will also be pronounced as Evie, or worse E-Wee by everyone.

Hoglet70 · 23/01/2025 21:09

I can't stop laughing. That's hideous!

Edited

It's subjective. Even on this thread not everyone thinks it's an awful name and I've actually seen suggestions/alternatives which I think are worse.

I'd never speak to my sister again if I found out she went to my husband to try and get him to help change my mind. Though, it's also assuming that the name wasn't his idea and/or he doesn't love it as much as she does.

Rosaofthevalley · 23/01/2025 21:15

I like it.

Not your baby not your decision. My sis didn’t like my kids names but it’s sod all of her business. I thought her choices were dull as ditch water, but she’s entitled to her own choice and I’ve got better manners than to point that out

GanninHyem · 23/01/2025 21:17

You can see where the bullies get it from aye, nothing more heartwarming than seeing grown children coming up with hilarious nicknames for children who have no choice what they are called. Bullies breed bullies.
