To tell my sister she's mad for naming her daughter this?

First baby. The name is a word. A word you would use to describe a very pleasurable feeling. No, not orgasm, before anyone says it!

It's absurd and I think someone should tell her. AIBU to say 'sorry, but it's ridiculous. You need to choose something else'.

My mum is all very supportive and says 'well, sometimes we don't like names. Then can't imagine them as anything else'

I think this is an exception.

May as well tell you the name actually, as my sister isn't going to be on MN! The name is Euphoria

She wants to call her Ewie for short, the nickname our late dad went by (he was an Ewan)

Point her towards the TV programme Euphoria, that will likely change her mind! Maybe best kept for a middle name.

TheBunyip · 23/01/2025 20:44

As an ageing raver I wholly support this idea

How about ''Comedown'' as a middle name, @lettingsitallbeagain ?

PercyFone · 23/01/2025 20:52

PrincessOfPreschool · 23/01/2025 20:27

I know a child called LaRose.

I prefer Euphoria by a distance she the nickname is very cute, with a lovely family connection. It's genuinely not awful. But she could go with other Eu names like Eustacia and... Can't think of anything...

Euphemia!

Bringmeahigherlove · 23/01/2025 20:52

WhatMothersDo22 · 23/01/2025 20:27

I can’t hear the word ‘Euphoria’ without singing the Swedish Eurovision song in my head!

That might put her off…

Came to say the same! Get her to listen to that song, it will soon put her off.

SouthLondonMum22 · 23/01/2025 20:52

She probably doesn't like what your children are named either. Names are subjective, you don't get a say on her baby's name.

Marcipix · 23/01/2025 20:52

Eugenie is really nice, and Eustacia is better than Euphoria.

You go ahead and upset your sister with your smugness about her dds name OP. And when you've caused a rift and possibly alienated her, you can come back and tell us all about it.
Or how about you dont, just keep your nose out and your opinions to yourself. Honestly.

Or her sister realises that it is a divisive name and has a change of heart and spares her child a lifetime of comments about her name.

goodnightgrumble · 23/01/2025 20:53

Heard a little girl called Navy recently. Never heard of it except the colour

Oodlesandoodlesofnoodles · 23/01/2025 20:53

It’s not that terrible. Makes me think of the euphonium.

Iwantmyoldnameback · 23/01/2025 20:53

Nodlikeyouwerelistening · 23/01/2025 20:44

Am I missing something? It really isn’t that bad. It’s just another virtuous name like Joy, Faith, Hope, Harmony, Verity.
It’s a little unusual and not my cup of tea, but it way less “out there” than half of the names you hear these days.
Ultimately it’s none of your business and your mum is right. It’s not like she’s calling her something offensive so you really need to button it.

This.

BornSandyDevotional · 23/01/2025 20:53

I don't think it's the worst. It's not for me. But it has been a girl's name for a good long while. So it's got heritage. Ewie is very nice and a lovely nod to family. It's growing on me by the second., TBH. It is a superb goth name! No one thinks it's odd calling a baby Joy or Athena or all manner of assumed characteristic/disposition names. YABA because it's not your child. Are you always mean and patronising about/towards your sister? Also, what are your children called?

AInightingale · 23/01/2025 20:54

It's flippin dreadful and awful for the child.

Euphemia is a cool name though and can also be shortened to Ewie.

LikeWhoUsesTypewritersAnyway · 23/01/2025 20:54

Hideous. Euphoria FFS! Hmm

And Ewie sounds like someone is heaving - like they want to be sick.

CrowleyKitten · 23/01/2025 20:55

I wouldn't choose it, but I don't think there's anything wrong with it. I wouldn't bat an eyelid at someone introducing themselves with that name.

MimiSunshine · 23/01/2025 20:55

WillimNot · 23/01/2025 20:28

They've probably got names on a par with it.

The one that got me was Molly Mae calling her DD Bambi. Jesus

I read this as the baby was called:
Bambi Jesus

😆

Nothing would surprise me

I don't like unusual names but that's actually very nice... I like it!

I am a sucker for Old Navy baby clothes though, well, back in the early 2000 Grin lovely

Namechangefordaughterevasion · 23/01/2025 20:56

I think your mum is right. You'll get used to it. All names were made up at some point. Lots would have seemed ridiculous when they were created but we get used to them. Or we don't and they die out.

Chastity used to be a very common name but not so much in vogue now. Euphoria is definitely better than that!

k1233 · 23/01/2025 20:56

Ewan can be used as a female name. I'd probably try suggesting that as an alternative.

denhaag · 23/01/2025 20:57

WillimNot · 23/01/2025 20:21

Oh god no. Has she been watching too much Towie or other chavvy programme?

That is truly bad. My cousin called her DD a ridiculous name (can't say, too outing), suffice to say the chips is now an adult and has changed it and has not spoken to my cousin for quite some time.

Surely there must have been other issues and not just the bad name that resulted in their relationship breaking down?
Or did she call her "Hate You"?

Greyish2025 · 23/01/2025 20:57

lettingsitallbeagain · 23/01/2025 20:43

Her ex boyfriend died from water intoxication caused by MDMA at a Basildon nightclub Confused

He was a right idiot. Loveable but an idiot.

This is all very outing, I would delete

SpearheadViking · 23/01/2025 20:57

I like Egwene, could possibly work with nickname.

MileyPsoriasis · 23/01/2025 20:57

Spirallingdownwards · 23/01/2025 20:52

Oh stop it! Divisive? It's not like she's calling the baby Adolf is it. That would be divisive.
It's her choice, not the OPs. She should mind her own business.

BigAngeOut · 23/01/2025 20:57

I really don't get why so much hate for this name. It's not like the word is Umbrella or Turtle or Action. It's a word that lends itself to be a name. Would I choose it, no, but nor would I judge someone else for choosing it. I also would make no judgement of a child or adult with the name. As PPs have said it's not much different from Gloria or Joy. I also think Ewie is a sweet nod to her Grandad and lovely to hear an unusual name tbh in a sea of Amelias and Sophias.

BrioNotBiro · 23/01/2025 20:58

I know they're two different words, but I keep thinking 'Euphonium', a big Tubby the Tuba brass instrument.
