To tell my sister she's mad for naming her daughter this?

First baby. The name is a word. A word you would use to describe a very pleasurable feeling. No, not orgasm, before anyone says it!

It's absurd and I think someone should tell her. AIBU to say 'sorry, but it's ridiculous. You need to choose something else'.

My mum is all very supportive and says 'well, sometimes we don't like names. Then can't imagine them as anything else'

I think this is an exception.

May as well tell you the name actually, as my sister isn't going to be on MN! The name is Euphoria

She wants to call her Ewie for short, the nickname our late dad went by (he was an Ewan)

You don't need the 'ph' as 'eu" makes the 'ef' sound. I know a few Greeks called Eugenia and really like the name.

It's actually pronounced Ev in greek - there is another name Iphigenia which has the 'f' sound.

None of your business.
She’s your sister - be supportive.

I had a great-aunt named Euphemia, who was known as Effie.

Euphoria, while it wouldn't be my choice, isn't terrible in the grand scheme of things.

Euphegenia Doubtfire dear. Help is on the wayyyyy

Euphoria sounds like an indie band from the 90's, or possibly a DJ, give it up for.. DJ Euphoria doing a Boiler Room set! Just needs some tiny decks for when she's 2 or 3.

This thread popped into my head this morning when out for a walk @lettingsitallbeagain and the thought that came was that your DSis should save it for a boy. My daughter would have hated being called Ewie as it’s really quite a typically male nickname, and people would probably ask “short for Ewan?” Tell her to save it for a future son, and Victoria and Ewan would actually be quite nice distinctive but non-embarrassing names. What a pity you poured scorn on Victoria in the first place - is it possible your DSis is just winding you up now because of that? Euphoria, as others have said is more likely to be shortened in school to Eufy, a robot vacuum cleaner brand.

Yikes thats bad. She will be bullied in school for her name if shes unlucky. I have a friend who is Constantine, he was (and still is sometimes) called 'cunt' for short. Kids can be brutal. Ewie - i mean, i dont even know, maybe it's ok for a baby/kid but as an adult? No.

Mummytotheboy · 30/01/2025 14:33

If she wants to call her Ewie why doesn't she call her Ewie to begin with?! I don't get this, my cousin had a baby she wanted to call him Sam, so she named him Samuel then got pissy when someone called him Samuel. That's his bloody name you melt, you chose it don't get mad when people use it!
Also I think Euphoria is a very bizarre choice, it's up there with my friend actually thinking she could name her daughter Pedigree!
