To tell my sister she's mad for naming her daughter this?

First baby. The name is a word. A word you would use to describe a very pleasurable feeling. No, not orgasm, before anyone says it!

It's absurd and I think someone should tell her. AIBU to say 'sorry, but it's ridiculous. You need to choose something else'.

My mum is all very supportive and says 'well, sometimes we don't like names. Then can't imagine them as anything else'

I think this is an exception.

May as well tell you the name actually, as my sister isn't going to be on MN! The name is Euphoria

She wants to call her Ewie for short, the nickname our late dad went by (he was an Ewan)

How about Eunice, so she can still be a Ewie? (Or, like others said, Eugenie)

missymousey · 23/01/2025 21:17

I like it.

I am loathe to say you're BU because you've revealed the name and done it in the opening post no less, but YABU. And the nickname idea & background is very sweet.

I don't think it's that awful, TBH. Certainly much better than 'Orgasm'.

That's really is a pretty low bar though 😂.

Awful name OP. I hope she's got an equally pretentious double barrelled surname to go with it though! Euphoria Sackville-Huntington for example.

When you say Ewie I think U turn ie There's no roundabout for miles so I'm going to have to do a U-ie.

JustSawJohnny · 23/01/2025 21:26

Oh dear. Yeah, that's bad!!

Agree that it's chavvy and embarrassing and that the kid is likely to catch some teasing over it.

I don't think you should be outrightly challenging it to your Dsis because, well, her choice, but I do think it's worth an honest conversation about it being potentially harsh on the kid.

DalzielOrNoDalzielAndDontPascoe · 23/01/2025 21:27

If it's ok to call someone Joy, then why not Euphoria?

But you could easily say if it's OK to call someone Mark, then why not Stain!

At least the sister isn't a sheep, calling her child something in the top ten.

I read that as 'in the top pen' at first!

You can see where the bullies get it from aye, nothing more heartwarming than seeing grown children coming up with hilarious nicknames for children who have no choice what they are called. Bullies breed bullies.

Oh come on, people are just being realistic! Catch a grip!

The name and the nn are both awful. If it was me, I'd have to say something to my sister, for my niece's sake.

Actually my mother would have shot it down in flames from the start. It's a stupid idea and someone who loves her needs to tell her!

Her ex boyfriend died from water intoxication caused by MDMA at a Basildon nightclub Confused

He was a right idiot. Loveable but an idiot.

If this is serious then fucking hell. My first thoughts on seeing your post was “did your DSis like shite dance music and bash a lot of pills?”
What does the child’s father think of this?

Hedjwitch · 23/01/2025 21:36

Ewie is dreadful.

Heard a little girl called Navy recently. Never heard of it except the colour

Haven't read full thread so someone else may have made this point but how would Navy fare if she wanted to join the Army?

Well. No. Mark is derived from the Nordic god Mars. Albeit loosely through the passage of Judaism. Bryce actually means blemish or stain.

Nikitaspearlearring · 23/01/2025 21:38

I usually loathe youneek names but I don't mind Euphoria. It's not necessarily chavvy - I could imagine it in posh circles along with Persephone and Callista. It's not awful. And Ria is an OK nickname for her to choose when she's older. I think you should keep out of this.

What a horrible thing to say.

Her sister is concerned for her. Otherwise she wouldn't care and wouldn't give it another thought.

It's not a matter of not liking it. I wouldn't have chosen some of my DN's names because they weren't to my personal taste, but they weren't out-there-ridiculous like this one is.

I'd appreciate having a sister that cared enough to be honest.

If your DSis is dead set on "Ewie" as a nickname, perhaps you could suggest some "U" names (Uma, Una, Ulla) so she could be nn'd "U-ey" ? My eldest daughter has a name beginning with a B, and everyone simply calls her "B".

Ultimately, I wouldn't push too hard, simply mention it might be a bit of an unusual name and not to your taste, but it's your DSis's baby, and you don't want to fall out with her over this, I'm sure.

But it's subjective. Not everyone thinks the name is ridiculous.

Labrawindow · 23/01/2025 21:42

It sounds like a stripper name, or a perfume.

The majority do, and I wouldn't like to hear the names the minority have called their children!!

Would you do that to your child? OP's sister needs saving from herself!!

whynotwhatknot · 23/01/2025 21:43

na not great reminds me of drugs

There is a perfume, Calvin Klein, 'Euphoria'!

MissScarletInTheBallroom · 23/01/2025 21:45

Euphoria is actually a euphemism for boner in certain circles.
