Have I been scammed?!

Part of me thinks yes but part me of me thinks no because I’ve been to her house.

Sold a nice item via a neighbourhood selling group and as it was heavy and I had a car I offered to drop it to the ladies house. She was very lovely and the house was lovely! But when I asked for payment, she asked for my bank details. I’ve sent them through and she says she’ll transfer…but having looked online it seems this is a common scam?!

But worst case I’ve been to her house and know her address. Or are people genuine and will transfer?

How long has it been? If she doesn't transfer the money unfortunately not much you can do unless it's expensive enough to go to small claims. Best not to exchange anything either buying or selling if you haven't received the item or been given the money.

MaroonyBalloony · 16/01/2025 18:28

I have done this as a buyer but paid there and then when receiving the item. How long ago did this happen?

TwentyTwentyFive · 16/01/2025 18:29

You left the item there without having received payment? That's madness. Yes it's absolutely a common scam and even though you have her address you have no real recourse if she doesn't decide to pay.

I totally agree. In hindsight I shouldn’t have given it without the money or a transfer. It’s only been an hour but slightly panicking!

I would have insisted on a bank transfer there and then. I doubt you’ll get it now. She has the item

TrolleySign · 16/01/2025 18:30

If she hasn't transferred it by now, I doubt she will.

Little you can do apart from shame her in the group.

That’s a good idea. How long do transfers tend to take to come in? I gave my Revolut details.

OP posts:
Dotto · 16/01/2025 18:31

Most people check the money is in their account before handing over the item. I'd go back there now and say you want to check the bank details as the payment hasn't come through.

olympicsrock · 16/01/2025 18:31

Don’t panic . She will probably pay you. Next time though ask for payment to be done at the time of delivery/ collection

NovemberMorn · 16/01/2025 18:32

I don't think it's unusual for her to ask for your bank details. Most people don't have cash hanging around nowadays and I doubt many write out checks.

It would take her 2 minutes to transfer from her account to yours, so if there is a delay, I would be wondering.

WeeOrcadian · 16/01/2025 18:33

I believe it's up to 2/4 hours

If it doesn't come through, go back and knock on her door, cheeky cow

And next time, don't leave until you SEE payment in your account

A few seconds

PlaneNoiz · 16/01/2025 18:34

Thank you all!! I have chased her again.

She’s said she paid 15 mins ago…

I have one bank that transfers immediately, another, a buiding society account takes up to 24 hours, so time definitely varies.

Payments show up pretty much immediately so it seems likely she's not being honest.

I have learnt that as a lesson!

Oh no, don't shame her in the group. You also shame yourself doing that!
You have to think whether it is worth a public drama or if you are best just chalking it up to experience. Never leave the item without payment in future.

What amount does she owe you?

It does say it can take up to 2 hours to show on some banks - mines always been instantly though.

I'd wait until morning and then if it doesn't show and she has no proof then shame away - people like that deserve it.

It’s £70.

Gosh I feel so silly for leaving without being paid!

I don’t like to be a doom monger but we had a neighbour who owed us money and it took about 3 visits and 6 weeks before I finally got it . She was an accountant in her family business and he was a consultant at the local hospital . It became highly embarrassing but a matter of principle for me . Hope you get your money @PlaneNoiz. In our case it was £230 .

dementedpixie · 16/01/2025 18:41

How much was it for?
Can she send proof it has left her account?
Next time stay until the payment has been actioned or make it clear you accept cash only before parting with the item

BIossomtoes · 16/01/2025 18:41

I made a payment at midday and the debit still isn’t showing in my bank account. Not all banks process at the same speed.

Beamur · 16/01/2025 18:43

It can take a couple of hours
