Have I been scammed?!

Part of me thinks yes but part me of me thinks no because I’ve been to her house.

Sold a nice item via a neighbourhood selling group and as it was heavy and I had a car I offered to drop it to the ladies house. She was very lovely and the house was lovely! But when I asked for payment, she asked for my bank details. I’ve sent them through and she says she’ll transfer…but having looked online it seems this is a common scam?!

But worst case I’ve been to her house and know her address. Or are people genuine and will transfer?

Honest people don’t wait hours to pay for an item which someone has already delivered to them

Honest people are still human. They wander off, put the parcel down, then their phone rings and it's Aunty Maude who yaps for half an hour, then they finish the call and start cooking dinner and before you know it three hours have passed.

Why would you give a total stranger your bank details!? 🤔

Why not? What do think might happen?

LBFseBrom · 16/01/2025 20:27

It will almost certainly be in your bank tomorrow. If it isn't, by close of play, go and see her.

In future stipulate cash on delivery - or else don't get involved.

MiniCooperLover · 16/01/2025 20:28

It's been 2 hours ... if she's had dinner, etc it's not really that long. Some banks don't do transfers after certain hours and it's not instant. If you don't have it by tomorrow then chase.

IMarchToADifferentDrummer · 16/01/2025 20:29

Ask her for a screenshot to show she has paid. I do that when sending money from my account, if she can't provide one tell her you will accept a cash payment.
If she refuses tell her you have proof that she provided her address and you delivered it. That the next step will be the police being involved!
Then tell the admin of the group about your troubles with her. They will know what to do, and she may be kicked out of the group and find herself with a black mark against her name.

ThickAsAPlank · 16/01/2025 20:31

I made a transfer to a revolut account recently and was told at my bank that they take longer to appear in the revolut account than in most other accounts.

rainbowunicorn · 16/01/2025 20:32

PlaneNoiz · 16/01/2025 20:08

Jesus!! I didn’t know about this!!

It is really not worth worrying about. Yes in theory someone could but it is highly unlikely, the direct debit guarantee would cover you anyway.

Growlybear83 · 16/01/2025 20:32

Surely you agreed how the woman would lay you before you agreed to deliver the item?why on earth didn't you ask for cash on delivery?

Mynewnameis · 16/01/2025 20:33

I doubt a scammer would do this seeing you know where she lives.

NoBodyIdRatherBe · 16/01/2025 20:33

I sell stuff a lot. Once a man cam for a large toy (I was only charging a fiver) by the time we got it in his car he ‘realised’ he forgot cash and said he’d go and get some and come back. He didn’t. The worst thing is he had his child with him. He wasn’t setting a great example that day.
I always trust people and this is the only time I’ve been ripped off. I’d rather be trusting and expect the best from people than live in a world where I’m constantly expecting people to have bad intentions.

For gods sake. Please. Read the thread. I’ve answered this so many times and you’re just making me feel even shitter.

Oh no what a horrible example to set to your children :-(

Update - She has said she has paid but isn’t sure why it isn’t showing in my bank. She said her bank won’t let her screenshot. She’s also sent me a video of the item in her home so she does seem genuine!

Payments show up pretty much immediately so it seems likely she's not being honest.

It depends on the banks involved.

A transfer from Revolut to Revolut would be nearly instant.

A transfer from a bank with older IT systems (like EBS in Ireland) to Revolut can take overnight. They literally don't process the payments until one overnight batch job on the computer.

GrandTheftWalrus · 16/01/2025 20:37

PlaneNoiz · 16/01/2025 18:44

It was for £70. That’s a good idea to ask for proof I’ll ask now! Or maybe she’s a mumsnetter and reading this thread haha

She won't be a mumsnetter as she answered the door.

Do you know which bank she is using?

My bank also doesn't let me screenshot. Ask her to write down all the numbers and send them to you. Maybe she put something in wrong and it's gone to the wrong place.

isitme111 · 16/01/2025 20:38

Not sure if this has already been mentioned as I haven’t read the whole thread but sometimes a bank can block a payment. This happened to me when I had building work done. I paid the builder and it didn't go through to his account as the bank were suspicious about the payment and put a hold on it until they could contact me to confirm it was a genuine payment. I've had this happen also with a £5 transfer I made to someone!

PlaneNoiz · 16/01/2025 20:38

Nogaxeh · 16/01/2025 20:37

I just asked she said it’s coming from her Halifax account and she gave me her full name to look out for the payment

OP posts:
FerretChops · 16/01/2025 20:39

I'd probably leave it for tonight

A message saying ' how strange! What bank are you with? OK, let's leave it until tomorrow morning and if still no joy, I'll pop round again and we can do cash instead'

dementedpixie · 16/01/2025 20:40

I think the issue is Revolut rather than the sender. Says within a few hours and up to 1 business day for transfers in

Have I been scammed?!
WhatInFreshHell · 16/01/2025 20:40

I think she's probably genuine OP, I'm with Halifax and I can't screenshot the app.

TheLemonFatball · 16/01/2025 20:41

I'm with Halifax and they don't let you screenshot. Odd for payment to not go in immediately though. Is that a revolut thing?

marble505 · 16/01/2025 20:41

It's pretty brazen to steal off a neighbour after they've delivered something off too. But you can never put stuff past people! Hopefully you get your payment OP.
