Have I been scammed?!

Part of me thinks yes but part me of me thinks no because I’ve been to her house.

Sold a nice item via a neighbourhood selling group and as it was heavy and I had a car I offered to drop it to the ladies house. She was very lovely and the house was lovely! But when I asked for payment, she asked for my bank details. I’ve sent them through and she says she’ll transfer…but having looked online it seems this is a common scam?!

But worst case I’ve been to her house and know her address. Or are people genuine and will transfer?

This is why sensible people say 'cash on collection' and are strict about it. The buyer collects and brings cash. Everything's easy.

I've only done a large transaction once. We stood in a car park, she told me her bank details, and we stood there with our phones till the money showed up in her account – about 5 seconds.

cantthinkofausername26 · 16/01/2025 19:15

She would be pretty stupid to try to scam you when you know where she lives. I would message her and say no worries about the transfer not working, I'll send my husband over in the morning to collect the cash.... with his brothers!!

BMW6 · 16/01/2025 19:18

I think she's paid but if she doesn't go and shit on her doorstep at random times for a year. At least.

Normallynumb · 16/01/2025 19:23

Don't feel silly. You judged her by what you would do.
Personally I would leave it until tomorrow before knocking on the door
If she won't send you proof of transfer, you can ask for your item back
She's stupid if she's trying to get away without paying as you know where she lives!

Laura36TTC · 16/01/2025 19:31

Why would you give a total stranger your bank details!? 🤔

TriesNotToBeCynical · 16/01/2025 19:32

Revolut is not a traditional bank. From their website:

Transfers sent to Revolut Receiving GBP: Faster Payments (FPS): usually within a few hours, but they can take up to 1 business day.

Obviously you aren't giving them your username and password. They can't do anything with your account number and name except pay you.

And what is she going to do with the information about where she lives? Stand on the pavement and glare at her? Ring her doorbell at 2am and run away?

For £70 it's not worth small claims.

That's for transfers i.e. bank transfers into a Revolut account.

Revolut to Revolut - which is what I assume happened with OP - should be instantaneous.

Blueberry911 · 16/01/2025 19:35

It's not scamming, it's more that you gave something away before someone paid so now she's probably less inclined to pay.

WWLD · 16/01/2025 19:36

Shadesofscarlett · 16/01/2025 19:05

she can send screenshot proving she has paid you

My banking app won't allow screenshots, so please don't assume she's scammed you if she can't send one.

Azandme · 16/01/2025 19:36

Mine won't either.

For gods sake I have already said next time I’ll do this. Yes I wasn’t sensible but no need to state the obvious. Argh.

I once bought some unwanted concert tickets from someone, quite last-minute (i.e. not long before the concert started). It finished quite late and I went straight to bed when I got home. I was not pleased when I woke up to find that the ticket seller had already been in touch by three different means, including phoning me at 8.30 on a Sunday morning. I had worked with this person, so they knew I was trustworthy, and I had every intention of transferring the money first thing that morning. (Not sure why I didn't do it the evening of the concert - maybe phone died or something.) Anyway, I do think you should give someone 24 hours to set up a new payee, etc. before starting to chase.

I don’t think there’s anything wrong with giving my sort code and account number? They can’t take my money etc!

So they can pay the op. How else would you propose it was paid if cash was not an option? Bankers draft? Postal order?

MissUltraViolet · 16/01/2025 19:43

I had someone come buy a laptop off me once, he wasn't walking back out the door until the money hit my account. Even had DP stand in front of the door in case he had any funny ideas to snatch and run.

You're just a trusting person OP, but never give someone an item again before you have the money!

Hopefully it turns up but usually bank transfers are pretty instant. If nothing drops into your account, be careful how you handle it moving forwards, even though you know her address you don't want to do anything to 'harass' her. I'd send another message in the morning, visit the house tomorrow afternoon with a letter you can pop through letterbox if nobody answers and then look into sending a LBA.

Screenshot all of your convo history and proof.

Also - giving someone your account number and sort code is fine, no worries there.

Givemecoffee77 · 16/01/2025 19:46

Hopefully you get paid shortly. I would give her to tomorrow and raise it in the local fb group for sure.

I only do cash when selling items, so I don’t have to give people my full name and / or bank details.

I recall reading about a scam doing the rounds a while ago whereby the person transferred the money then once they had the item raised a bank dispute saying items were faulty or something and got the money back that way, so I always stick to cash.

Fruhstuck · 16/01/2025 19:47

verycloakanddaggers · 16/01/2025 18:38

Oh no, don't shame her in the group. You also shame yourself doing that!
You have to think whether it is worth a public drama or if you are best just chalking it up to experience. Never leave the item without payment in future.

What amount does she owe you?

Edited

Nonsense! I would! There’s no shame in trusting somebody whose house you’ve been to isn’t a crook.

Don't worry OP, I'm sure she has paid since you have been to her house. I'm like you, I tend to trust my judgment of people and to this day I haven't had any misfortunes. I think that when you're an honest person you tend to trust people to be honest. And I do think most of them are..

dyedinthewoolcheeseeater · 16/01/2025 19:49

If she's told you she's paid and it's not come through you need to tell her. If I do a transfer on a situation like this I usually screenshot the confirmation. Just get back to her and tell her the money hasn't arrived so she needs to do it again!

Don't worry, nothing they can do with that. Should have come through straight away if she did send it so I think she's a not bothered. Sorry OP, it's a horrible experience 😞

DuesToTheDirt · 16/01/2025 19:50

I still like cash for personal buying and selling. If I'm going to buy something I take cash with me, and likewise if selling I specify cash. So much less stressful.

Thank you. Just so fed up of people on here stating the obvious that I made a mistake! I am an honest person, rather shy and hate confrontation so in that circumstance I reacted as I would!
