Have I been scammed?!

Part of me thinks yes but part me of me thinks no because I’ve been to her house.

Sold a nice item via a neighbourhood selling group and as it was heavy and I had a car I offered to drop it to the ladies house. She was very lovely and the house was lovely! But when I asked for payment, she asked for my bank details. I’ve sent them through and she says she’ll transfer…but having looked online it seems this is a common scam?!

But worst case I’ve been to her house and know her address. Or are people genuine and will transfer?

I just asked she said it’s coming from her Halifax account and she gave me her full name to look out for the payment

Halifax say that a Faster Payments transfer to another UK bank can take up to two hours. I wouldn't panic just yet.

Teanbiscuits33 · 16/01/2025 20:42

She probably won’t send it now. I wouldn’t do bank transfers at all though because people can do chargebacks. There’s no way of proving they have the item they paid for so they can claim to the bank that they themselves were scammed and get the bank to reverse the payment. I always insist on cash if I’m selling something being collected.

CousinBob · 16/01/2025 20:43

I’m sure it will be fine OP. I’ve been trusting in many situations without a problem so far.

timetodecide2345 · 16/01/2025 20:44

You need to wise up op!

Arlanymor · 16/01/2025 20:47

viques · 16/01/2025 20:17

You mean the exact same bank details that were printed on every personal cheque anyone ever used in the history of writing personal cheques?

I came here to say this!

Arlanymor · 16/01/2025 20:50

FerretChops · 16/01/2025 20:39

I'd probably leave it for tonight

A message saying ' how strange! What bank are you with? OK, let's leave it until tomorrow morning and if still no joy, I'll pop round again and we can do cash instead'

Good suggestion.

I. KNOW. It’s been said so many times on this thread. Yes I need to be less trusting, more confident and less flustered and more confrontational. I know I made a bloody mistake. But please be nice.

Good suggestion.

I sent something very similar and here’s hoping it’ll arrive overnight :)

I think she sounds genuine. I also know Revolut can be slow.

I really wouldn't worry until tomorrow.

And I'd rather see the good in people than always be suspicious. That said I have ADD and reading other people is my superpower, so I can usually tell immediately if someone is iffy.

Fingers crossed for you my lovely.

Quiinkong · 16/01/2025 20:56

Sorry OP but she has most definitely not sent you that money even though she says she has. Halifax payments will not take hours to show up, it will take seconds. Only small banks have their payments take a bit longer

lto2019 · 16/01/2025 20:57

I am with Halifax and think she is right that it doesn't let you screen shot but it does send me a text notification saying you have paid X - Y amount but I am not sure if I had to set that up. When I transfer it does say it can take up to x many hours for the person to receive it but they have always got it instantly.

If you don't get it by tonight - I would message and say it has not come through so I will return for the item tomorrow and she can chase up with her bank.

TerrysNeapolitan · 16/01/2025 20:59

I use revolut a lot even to move money to one of my own bank accounts and if she did the transfer late this afternoon it will not show up to the earliest tomorrow morning - mine never do OP. It may be even close of play Fri/Mon morning - it is never instant.

TheQuirkyMaker · 16/01/2025 21:05

PlaneNoiz · 16/01/2025 19:41

I don’t think there’s anything wrong with giving my sort code and account number? They can’t take my money etc!

You are right, this is perfectly normal. People can't withdraw money from your account but they need the details to pay into it!

DreamW3aver · 16/01/2025 21:06

InWalksBarberalla · 16/01/2025 20:38

My bank also doesn't let me screenshot. Ask her to write down all the numbers and send them to you. Maybe she put something in wrong and it's gone to the wrong place.

Extremely unlikely with confirmation of payee

My bank doesn't let you screenshot either but I think you can send the person a message to say you've paid

Dobbycraft · 16/01/2025 21:08

I don't think you've been scammed, especially if she has historic posts on the group about parenting etc.

At the very worst she's chancing it and hoping you'll forget. But I bet it comes in tomorrow.

How do you know? More than one person has explained that transfers to Revolut accounts take longer than other banks

What makes you so sure shes a liar?

kittyycatt · 16/01/2025 21:15

I have a revolut account but don't use it very often. DH is with Halifax and transfers have never taken more than a minute or two.

kittyycatt · 16/01/2025 21:19

I just checked by sending myself some money from DH Halifax to my Revolut and it was instant. I actually got the revolut notification before the Halifax spending one!

Toooldforthisshit49 · 16/01/2025 21:20

A payment from Halifax to Revolut can take a few hours to a few days, depending on the type of payment and the destination.

Halifax payments
Payments to new people
Payments made online or through the Halifax mobile banking app usually arrive within two hours.

International transfers
The time it takes depends on the destination and currency. For example, payments to EEA countries in euros usually take one working day.

Revolut payments
Faster Payments (FPS): Payments to Revolut in GBP usually arrive within a few hours, but can take up to one business day.

Salary payments: Payments to Revolut usually arrive in two to three business days.

CHAPS: Payments to Revolut usually arrive within one business day.

International transfers: Payments to Revolut can take up to five business days, depending on the intermediary banks.

Factors that can delay payments
Payments made over weekends or bank holidays may be delayed.

If the recipient's bank is experiencing maintenance or an outage, the payment may be delayed.

The sending bank handles the initial transfer, so Revolut can't influence its status or processing.

You can use Revolut's in-app incoming transfer tracker to get an estimated arrival date for your payment.
Hopefully you'll see your payment in the morning 👍

BobbyBiscuits · 16/01/2025 21:22

Well you should've given them and sat there til the money went in. Otherwise you can't do much other than turn up on her doorstep. But it might not have been her house.

loveyoutothemoonandtosaturn · 16/01/2025 21:22

OP I work for a well known high street bank. Anyone giving you a hard time about giving your bank details are incorrect. Fraudsters can do absolutely nothing with your sort code and account number expect put money in. Card details, absolutely do not give out! Also most faster payments will go through straight away, but some banks can be slower. I'd tend to give her the benefit of the doubt here.

thank you for this. I also was so bamboozled when she asked for my details that i opened my Revolut app - I NEVER use it! I don’t know why i even thought to give those details!

You can absolutely screenshot on Halifax. I’ve just done it

anotherday11 · 16/01/2025 21:26

PlaneNoiz · 16/01/2025 20:36

Update - She has said she has paid but isn’t sure why it isn’t showing in my bank. She said her bank won’t let her screenshot. She’s also sent me a video of the item in her home so she does seem genuine!

That’s a lie as Halifax changed their stance on screenshots from online banking recently, I can remember reading e-mail. Also I bank with them too and I just now logged on to my online banking and took a screenshot just fine. Sounds like she’s bullshitting you.
