Have I been scammed?!

Part of me thinks yes but part me of me thinks no because I’ve been to her house.

Sold a nice item via a neighbourhood selling group and as it was heavy and I had a car I offered to drop it to the ladies house. She was very lovely and the house was lovely! But when I asked for payment, she asked for my bank details. I’ve sent them through and she says she’ll transfer…but having looked online it seems this is a common scam?!

But worst case I’ve been to her house and know her address. Or are people genuine and will transfer?

You gave someone an item that you were selling for £70 and actually left before seeing the money in your account? You’re crazy!!

ABunchOfBadBitches · 17/01/2025 09:56

How is it confrontational to ask for money that someone has agreed to paying?!

GhostOrchid · 17/01/2025 10:07

Glad you got your money OP. Thought you would.

I dont know anything about Revolut but don’t they have a payment link option? I’m with Starling and use it all the time. It just generates a link for a specific amount that you can text or WhatsApp and is v easy for people to pay. You don’t even need to give out your account number and sort code and the person paying doesn’t need to go through the hassle of setting up a new payee. Payment should be instant.

I'm very glad OP! If it helps, I fell for a Facebook Oasis tickets scam ... 😶🙄

That’s not a mistake, it’s just common sense surely? You’ve posted on a public forum for people’s input so I’m giving you mine. You got your money so that’s all that matters

UPDATE UPDATE UPDATE - THE MONEY IS IN MY ACCOUNT!!!!!

thank you to every single person who replied and supported me. I’ve learnt a big lesson. I thank you all.

I hope you also learnt the lesson that you are a decent person and a decent judge of character 🙂 (even though not so good at thinking on the spot)

So pleased for you - hurrah! Hope the money goes towards something fun. 🤑

MurdoMunro · 17/01/2025 14:00

Glad to see your still here @PlaneNoiz. Patiently standing there listening to the queue of people in turn telling you exactly what the one before you just said 😆

NovemberMorn · 17/01/2025 14:06

Just a tip that may help.
Talk of scammers is worrying, so if I have to give bank details to anyone, I always use a spare bank account I keep with only a few ££ in it to keep it open.
In the event someone did try to scam my account, they would only have access to a pointless one.

I'm sure it's not foolproof, but it keeps my mind at rest.

That's a really good point - I have a Monzo account that I use that for. My main banking is with Starling. Whenever Monzo gets above £50 I transfer it across.

Thank you. I’m going to donate part of it to the hospital where my DC were born (the item was something related to them) and the rest using towards my DHs birthday gift!

That’s a super smart approach. I have two accounts.

Have asked but no reply. Maybe she’s putting her DC to bed and will reply Later?

I can't screenshot from my bank account, just so you know.

Excellent news OP.. Just one question remains… what did you sell 💁🏻‍♀️?

It’s not as outing now I’ve got it. But a baby furniture bundle. Cot changing table etc. hence why I dropped it off! Wanted it to go to a lovely new family as I’ve years of memories with those items.

that’s all well and good but you should meet in a Tesco car park two towns away and insist on cash. Nobody else in all 11 pages has thought of this, it’s my own original thought, there’s no need for me to read even the first page because I am very very original and clever you see. I mean really, what would you people do without me?

ZeldaFighter · 17/01/2025 14:18

Glad it's all sorted with a good outcome

Why would you give a total stranger your bank details!? 🤔

It's totally safe, you can't do anything with them apart from pay in money. I run a small business where I get paid exclusively via bacs so constantly give bank details out to strangers. In the last 20 years of doing so have bever ever had any issues.
