To not want to sit and watch YouTubers all night?

Miserableat29 · 14/01/2025 21:45

Been at work all day cooked put the DS to bed who is a pain for bedtime takes me a good 45 minutes to get him to sleep. Finally come downstairs to relax and have a cuppa DH is watching his fav YouTubers one after eachother. Really cringy childish stuff I can’t stand it. Had a huge argument about it and he’s gone upstairs in a huff and kicked the bin over!!

Am I supposed to just go along with what he wants.

Yeah he's a dick. If it's the main tv then you watch something you both enjoy. If I wanted to watch something DH would hate I'd go and do it somewhere else or wait until a time he wasn't there.
DH does that with football even and he loves football.. but he will always ask if its OK to watch on the main tv.. he wouldn't just put it on as he knows I hate it so it's antisocial.

Wateroffacatsback · 14/01/2025 23:00

Please try to relax.

I'm relaxing to NPR on YouTube 👍🏻

Ew that would give me the ick tbh, a grown man watching YouTube, dunno why 😄😄

I think it is for kids and make up tutorials

Yanbu

There is sooo much content on YouTube. It is a wee bit more than make up tutorials, but I guess it depends on what exactly he's watching.

22nws · 14/01/2025 22:57

There is so much more to it. I watched a video earlier today that showed how to take apart my shower drain. Loads of educational stuff on there. I use it loads and I'm a middle aged woman.

I feel like being sat watching YouTube on your phone/ipad briefly for a tutorial on something is fine

But i couldnt get on with a man sat down watching YouTube like its tv 😬

Wateroffacatsback · 14/01/2025 23:02

@TightlyLacedCorset

Pull down projector screen and projector mounted on the ceiling. It has a chromecast doodah in one of the usb ports. We've had it for years. I wouldn't ever have a tv again.

KrisAkabusi · 14/01/2025 23:04

😄 okay I'm willing to die on this hill

Watching YouTube as a grown man is icky! Watch a proper show on a proper streaming platform

That's bizarre. It's like complaining about a man watching the BBC news because CBeebies exists.

So your man comes home from work

Cracks open the wine or a beer and says

I wonder what my favourite youtuber is up to???? Let me put on the tv and find out??? 😄 unacceptable!!

I think we should use this thread to recommend all the good stuff on YouTube.

I nominate JCS Criminal Psychology channel. Someone has also uploaded all of the Ricky Gervais Show cartoon series.

I see they've deleted the last one because everyone kicked off about the AI voiceover.

I've just subscribed to a bunch of budgeting and healthy eating channels. I watch a few "disaster" channels which explain why buildings collapsed, why train crashes have happened etc. I love Super Eyepatch Wolf who does deep dives into different subjects and somehow makes them fascinating even when I have no interest in the subject. Also, several cat/dog channels.

Youtube literally has videos on any subject you could possibly want.

Twaddlepip · 14/01/2025 23:14

I honestly think I’d leave a man over something like this. I associate anyone who watches YouTube in this way with conspiracy theorists and those worship Andrew Fucking Tate. It feels like a slippery slope for an already weak mind…

I feel your pain. Same you tube this house but no sulking or kicking the bin over in this house.

Namechanged4obviousreasons · 14/01/2025 23:20

I think the bigger issue is why you’re going to work, cooking, doing a 45 min bedtime routine and then coming down to find you can’t even watch the tv. Does he pull his weight or does he just sit watching YouTube? If it’s the latter, I’d be pretty annoyed too.

TightlyLacedCorset · 14/01/2025 23:22

TheTruthHurtsDontIt · 14/01/2025 22:30

I mean technically it's demonstrably not for kids as you have to be 13 to use it unsupervised according to the TOS.

I watch loads of science, cooking, news and history stuff on there, very narrow view you have if you think it's just for "kids and makeup".

I agree, History on YT is bloody brilliant! I often fall asleep listening to People Profiles, but there is loads to choose from. Just tons. From all over the world and about practically every civilization that has ever existed.

The range of political coverage is immense. You can access the major news corps of virtually every country as well as Sky, BBC, etc I actually prefer Sky on YT and Sky Australia

Anthropology, psychology, nature programs, maths, survival skills, lectures, debates, clothes design, runway fashion, history of Art, Royal coverage, languages, cooking, science, philosophy, history, crafts, live court cases, historical enactments, documentaries, how to's, celebrity scandals, live international sporting competitions, podcasters, financial news.

If I were exiled to a deserted island, and there was only one SM website I could use. It would be YT.

That all said OP, I think your DH ought to have been more accommodating and you should have found something together to watch. His reaction, considering how much you had done before relaxing was OTT.

Tonight I've watched a 25 minute video about "Tarzan Boy" by Baltimora, an 1 hour 15 minute video about the psychology of a serial killer and 45 minute video about the £700 Christmas crackers from Harrods.

Literally something for everyone.

I'll also fall asleep to an ASMR video.

YouTube kids is actually not a great place for kids, there's really no moderation and the algorithm is designed to keep them glued to the screen. As you don't know a lot about it I caution you using it for your child, especially unsupervised. Don't mean this in a judgy way, just fyi.

Who makes the videos? Is it just randoms?

How can you trust what you're hearing is true? Are you youtubing things that are shown on tv anyway?

I did watch a recording of the original dream girls performance of 'and I am telling you' once - that was very moving but again was watched appropriately on my phone during the small hours when I couldn't sleep

johnd2 · 14/01/2025 23:27

Is your complaint about what he's watching or the fact that you've been struggling with all the work while he relaxed and then has no appreciation of your effort?
Focus on the actual issue otherwise you'll never resolve it.

That's okay, it's used on the tv - we watched Mr tumble today actually, hop little bunny calmed her down when she was inching towards a meltdown

I only watch YouTube and Netflix. No “normal” TV at all.

How is the algorithm any different from other platforms? Genuine question. I am a bit concerned about my 9yo always choosing YTK rather than proper programming : series which needs a bit more focussed concentration.

Wateroffacatsback · 14/01/2025 23:32

@mumofoneAlonebutokay

You're making up your own rules about "appropriate" ways to watch something on YouTube. You'll respond with emojis and sarcasm, but quite frankly you just haven't discovered good content on YouTube. That's fine, but fantastic content is there. And if I'm going to watch a half hour or an hour of something that is great quality, I'm not going to watch it on my phone.

It's like me saying I won't watch television because of Love Island. YouTube is simply a platform. You and PPs notions of it all being Andrew Tate and the like is just weird and misguided.

This evening we watched a documentary about Aardman Animation Studios, after enjoying the new Wallace and Gromit at Christmas. We were interested in behind the scenes. It's an hour long. Why would I watch that on my phone?

The music one was a guy who does deep dives into one hit wonders.

The psychology one is psychologist Emma Kenny.

The crackers is a random.

Not sure what you think I would be seeing that's untrue? Do you think he showed things in the crackers which weren't there?

There are lots of differing opinions on youtube, you'll find flat earthers, conspiracy theorists etc if you want. You end up finding what you like and subscribing to certain channels, it's not as if other media is always 100% truthful.

Unexpectedlysinglemum · 14/01/2025 23:34

That's very aggressive on his part

BobbyBiscuits · 14/01/2025 23:35

I think watching you tube vids on the 'main' telly when your partner isn't interested is annoying. It's the sort of thing you watch on a phone or tablet with headphones. As others say.
Kicking things is awful and if he broke anything or made a mess he needs to apologise and tidy up/buy new bin.

This makes no sense. We're both entitled to watch things how we want in our own homes. I'm not interested in a specific genre of documentaries my husband watches. But he can watch them because they're broadcast on "real telly" but I have to watch a documentary on my phone because it's been uploaded to YouTube? No. He gets to watch things and so do I. We don't have to share all the same interests.
