To not want to sit and watch YouTubers all night?

Miserableat29 · 14/01/2025 21:45

Been at work all day cooked put the DS to bed who is a pain for bedtime takes me a good 45 minutes to get him to sleep. Finally come downstairs to relax and have a cuppa DH is watching his fav YouTubers one after eachother. Really cringy childish stuff I can’t stand it. Had a huge argument about it and he’s gone upstairs in a huff and kicked the bin over!!

Am I supposed to just go along with what he wants.

To each his own 😂
You gotta be trolling

Thanks for the laugh before sleep! Funny as hell

Real life lore is another excellent channel 7.7 million subscribers, I have learnt so much about the world from this channel on YouTube

Yes. Another brilliant one!

Ew that would give me the ick tbh, a grown man watching YouTube, dunno why 😄😄

I think it is for kids and make up tutorials

Yanbu

You tube does have some interesting stuff on there {But with an ad blocker, otherwise it's unwatchable} there is some really amazing old footage from decades ago and old films- I never watch the rubbishy stuff, some good podcasts as well.

Caerulea · 15/01/2025 01:06

Some ridiculous & ignorant opinions on here about YT 🙄.

Rarely watch on the TV unless it's something we all want to watch (there's been some gameplay stuff we all enjoy) but right now DH is asleep & I'm 'watching' a markiplier podcast on my phone whilst playing House Flipper on the PS5. How's THAT for cringe?

I watch a lot of gaming related content from adults, some commentary stuff (from adults that aren't Tate or Rogan fgs), there's a female gamer who's really relaxing & plays really niche indie horror games & so on. It's not that different, really, to watching a particular presenter or journalist or radio host regardless of the subject, you enjoy their content & character so watch it.

One of the bigger benefits, as a mum of teen boys, is that we've always got stuff to talk about cos I'm generally up to date with gaming studios are doing what, or what idiotic thing some incel influencer has said etc etc etc. But I've been 'online' for some 30+ yrs so it's all very natural to me.

Also got terrible tinnitus so can't do silence so have to have something on all the time.

RobinMcfly · 15/01/2025 01:18

mine is usually youtube, but a mix, eg , music videos, itv iplayer other shows clips etc

crumblingschools · 15/01/2025 01:32

How much parenting did DH do?

I've read most of the the thread and it has been slightly de-railed about what YouTube has on offer.
@Miserableat29 No this isn't something you have to accept. You may want to talk to him about things you both like to watch. For example when you first got together? Re run an old series for example?
Me and my husband watch things for an hour or so together and then we may move to separate device if we want that "down time". As PP have said it is a compromise. If you want to wantch something different together that you might both be interested in them suggest it.

Oriunda · 15/01/2025 01:53

My DH does this. He has a stressful job with long hours, and it helps him relax. Sometimes there’s something we’ll watch together, but I’m a SAHM, so I can catch up on my tv another time, or I just put headphones on and watch my programmes on the iPad (which I often prefer as I use the 10 second flick button a lot).

Lafee · 15/01/2025 02:10

Hazeby · 14/01/2025 21:53

If I’m watching something I know DH won’t like, I turn it off when he comes in and we choose something with both want. Common courtesy isn’t it?

I agree with you...
My partner and I often want to see different to each other's "taste" in viewing.
I've found that by us compromising with each other's viewing, it's opened up subjects I was previously unaware of, and the same for him.
It's opened up discussions, and been mostly positive.
There are exceptions, we are mindful of each other's "no-nos" ... I don't like watching horror, so we'll either switch to something else, or if he really does want to watch it, I'll involve myself in something else.

OP, only you know if it's your OH or you being unreasonable with hogging the main TV..., the answer is compromising from both of you.

You know those threads where people post about weird rules they had growing up and there would be tales of mum’s who had banned ITV from the tv and everyone laughs because it’s quite ridiculous really. 30 years time @mumofoneAlonebutokay‘s children are going to be telling everyone that their mother had this weird aversion to YouTube Grin

Watching a youtuber as an adult man is despicable was my original point - i stand by it

Watching YouTube for any purpose other than what I've said, is weird

The tv is for tv programmes and films - not some random explaining his opinion on a historical event

If you have to watch YouTube for a short time it's fine on your phone/tablet for those specific tutorials you need

Its for teenagers and conspiracy theorists

I'm way outnumbered here so there's no point keeping on 😄😄 but in the cold light of day, I stand by what I've said 🥰

Ironically, you sound really immature and silly.

I watch YouTube every day. Always plenty on it. Much better than tv!

excalty, ill admit many of the documentarys were orignally on tv, but theres that many, then when some youtubers do their own eg making a bike etc it all adds to knowledge

I think we should use this thread to recommend all the good stuff on YouTube.

I nominate JCS Criminal Psychology channel. Someone has also uploaded all of the Ricky Gervais Show cartoon series.

Tasting history with Max Miller
The great war and World war two with Indy neidell.
The Townsends 18th century cooking
Ashens and Lindy Beige

mumofoneAlonebutokay · 14/01/2025 22:32

Im fine with having a narrow view on the various uses of YouTube 😄

It feels icky honestly because i only ever used it as a teen so it doesn't seem age appropriate for a grown up but I accept that there's more to it

I'd get more of an "ick" (what a stupid term) from someone who watched TikTok and Insta reels.

LeaderBee · 15/01/2025 11:26

slashlover · 14/01/2025 23:33

The music one was a guy who does deep dives into one hit wonders.

The psychology one is psychologist Emma Kenny.

The crackers is a random.

Not sure what you think I would be seeing that's untrue? Do you think he showed things in the crackers which weren't there?

There are lots of differing opinions on youtube, you'll find flat earthers, conspiracy theorists etc if you want. You end up finding what you like and subscribing to certain channels, it's not as if other media is always 100% truthful.

The one hit wonders guy i think is called scott in the shadows? Maybe? he's very informative.

It's Todd in the Shadows, he's great and does a lot of research.

You are so funny.

So the millions of people who are watching YouTube are watching make up tutorials or drunkenly trying to find old songs/music?!

Because I have just watched a clip of Graham Norton’s show that’s been viewed 23 million times ( from 5 years ago no less ) and and a History Hit documentary about the real Uthred of Bamburg that’s been viewed 1.3 million times.

I guess they were all teenagers and conspiracy theorists…

🤣

Ginkypig · 15/01/2025 12:24

Forgetting peoples opinions on YouTube for a second.

the main tv is for sharing!

if more than one person is there then you find something all people want to watch.

I have programs I watch and save until I am on my own because no one else is interested and I expect others to do the same.

unless the other people in the room say no it’s fine John,Linda, jemima etc you watch that I’m not bothered

LeaderBee · 15/01/2025 12:31

Wateroffacatsback · 15/01/2025 00:20

I love the idea that YouTube isn't worth watching and is "icky", but Twitter is fine.

Or instagram - just a bunch of flakes posting pictures for attention.

MorrisZapp · 15/01/2025 12:34

'he was watching his fav youtubers, one after the other. Really childish, cringy stuff'

From the OP. No philosophy, one hit wonders or deep dive podcasts mentioned. I'd have thrown the telly out of the window. Mindless scrolling of silly videos is strictly for phones or personal devices.
