Discussion with my DH tonight about this. Am I right in thinking that unisex bathrooms are not great?

If the doors go to the floor and ceiling all good

You're more likely to be assaulted in a mixed sex toilet than single sex one.

WaitingforStrike · 28/12/2024 22:06

I'm not a fan of floor to ceiling doors, feel very blocked in in them - and still likely to have pee on the floor/seat (and could have a camera hidden somewhere, if you're really unlucky).

MyPithyPoster · 28/12/2024 22:06

Because it doesn’t feel safe.

There’s very good reason why most toilets aren’t floor to ceiling. When you are having a heart attack, you feel like you need to do a poo. A very disconcerting amount of people to die on the toilet. Some of them in public toilets.

YouMeandBrie · 28/12/2024 22:07

Personal safety and dignity.

Changethenamey · 28/12/2024 22:07

My work were considering making all toilets unisex. I did object, mainly because some of the men I work with are vile and leave the toilets in an absolute state. They won’t even spray air freshener or open a window when they’ve had a shit. Appreciate some women are also just as bad but not in my office. We have one unisex, one male and one female toilet now so everyone is happy. 😃

TestingTestingWonTooFree · 28/12/2024 22:07

Mixed toilets are usually dirty. I don’t want to share with men for that reason.

JPC123 · 28/12/2024 22:07

I have different from SA in the past. I don’t feel safe in enclosed places like a public bathroom with men. I know the vast majority of men are good people but that does t help with my panoc

derbiee · 28/12/2024 22:07

Female toilets are gross i can't imagine men's being any worse

If they have cubicles not sure why the panic

Brightredtulips · 28/12/2024 22:08

I was innone in brixton market. Came out my cubicle and guys were waiting for cubicle. Weren't a threat but God I felt so so uncomfortable and vulnerable. I didn't want my mum or daughter to then go to that toilet.

AlmostAJillSandwich · 28/12/2024 22:08

Because I've seen/smelled how men treat public toilets, they don't aim and piss everywhere, and shit happily without cleaning up after themselves.
It's hard enough finding a womens loo with a cubicle that hasn't got piss on the seat/floor from the stupid hover brigade.
Add in the fact some men will get a sexual kick out of deliberately making a nasty mess knowing a woman is going to see it/ have to clean it up, and just no.

ApolloandDaphne · 28/12/2024 22:09

I've never had an issue with a unisex bathroom.

Ponderingwindow · 28/12/2024 22:10

There are multiple unisex bathrooms in my area. The ones that are built new and well-designed are fine. They have been built with privacy, hygiene, and cleaning in mind. They don’t bother me at all.

bathrooms are distinctly different than changing rooms. Those should always be separate.

Men’s toilets are beyond disgusting. Go in any unisex toilet at a restaurant after men have been in.

we have a unisex toilet at work and the men do not look back. And they keep moving the sanitary bin out of sitting reach out of their way. Er, no dickhead. It is a shared space, it isnt designed just for your comfort.

A woman I knew died this way.

Mostly safety. More likely to be assaulted in a mixed sex toilet/changing room. But also dignity. And inclusivity of women of a religious persuasion.

The Brixton Market toilets last time I was there were awful. Dirty, queues and lots of men.

RebelMoon · 28/12/2024 22:12

Some women can't share these spaces with men for religious reasons

JarvisIsland · 28/12/2024 22:12

I’m not bothered by them in ‘controlled’ environments, eg our small office has a unisex toilet. 3 floor to ceiling cubicles but shares a sink. If there was piss everywhere people would absolutely be called out for it and there is a cleaner daily. We are a team of 14.

Somewhere mass like a shopping mall I’d be less keen. I’m personally not worried by being assaulted or anything like that, but I have done the ‘there’s no queue in the men’s I’ll go in there’ more than once in my life and those places are rank. They stink and are generally a worse condition than the female only toilets so I’d rather not. Mind you, I think in nightclubs and the like even the women’s toilets can be rank, toilet roll and tampons everywhere so I’d probably just try and go somewhere else if I knew I was going somewhere with rank toilets. I’m also lucky in that I can hold it for a reasonable amount of time so would just not go somewhere I didn’t feel safe/clean. I appreciate this isn’t an option for everyone and so for that reason I think truly public toilets should stay single sex.

Unfortunately, no. The person who attempted to rape a little girl in the supermarket bathroom of a town where I used to work shoved her into a cubicle with the intention of assaulting her there.

HPandthelastwish · 28/12/2024 22:13

Ignoring the physical safety aspect

Ignoring the increased incidents of cameras being put into unisex toilets for voyeurs.

Ignoring the fact that young girls shouldn't have to walk past random blokes with their penises out.

You have the very basic and added 'ick' of blokes peeing on the toilet seat and floors as they seem to have no issue doing it in their homes I'm sure a good percentage would happily do it in public to get off. Why should a toddler or elderly person who can no longer hover have to sit on that?

The very grim prospect of (if they've actually put San pro bins in the cubicles) some dirty fucker removing used San pro to play out their fantasy.

So no, I'm not down with unisex toilets.
