To ask why women would be uncomfortable with unisex bathrooms

Discussion with my DH tonight about this. Am I right in thinking that unisex bathrooms are not great?

OP posts:
WinterCrow · 28/12/2024 22:13

Because I don't want to have to share toilets with the sort of man who wants to share toilets with non-consenting women.

ToBeOrNotToBee · 28/12/2024 22:14

The Hunterian museum has mixed sex toilets with floor to ceiling walls and doors.
I was waiting for a loo and was greeted with a man coming out of the cubicle, zipping himself up and piss all over the seat.

It was grim. My dignity and modesty discarded in the name of 'progress'.

NecklessMumster · 28/12/2024 22:14

I used a unisex toilet in an arts complex recently. I hadn't realised that the door lock was faulty and a man tried to come in the cubicle thinking it was free. He said 'oh, sorry' and left. But I was surprised by the instant visceral panic reaction I had, if it had been a woman in a single sex loo I'd just have been mildly irritated

LPCrunchie · 28/12/2024 22:14

Unisex toilets are universally awful. I hate that this is now a thing in restaurants.

DancingLions · 28/12/2024 22:15

Why do we have to make space for men? Why is it up to us to argue against something that shouldn't be happening in the first place? No one should have to give their reasons why they don't want it. Its enough to just say no I'm not comfortable with that.

If it's a scenario where there's no choice. For example toilets on planes. Fair enough. But if there are already perfectly adequate mens/women's (or the space for it), why change them to unisex?

SallyWD · 28/12/2024 22:16

I have no problem with it.

WearyAuldWumman · 28/12/2024 22:16

There's also the recent case of the schoolboy who apparently left a camera in the unisex bathrooms of a Dundee school.

Entitled to what? Equal pay? Right to have your own bank account? Right to own your own property? Right not to be sacked for being pregnant? Wanting to go to a public toilet without fear of men or their pee everywhere? Police to investigate domestic abuse? Not to be blamed for a man raping them because they were wearing literally anything?

What are women today feeling so entitled about that you disagree with?

AmateurNoun · 28/12/2024 22:16

I’m not bothered by them in ‘controlled’ environments, eg our small office has a unisex toilet. 3 floor to ceiling cubicles but shares a sink

They are still not great in this kind of environment. Somebody I work with was prosecuted for voyeurism involving filming women. Fortunately we have single sex toilets at work, but the point is you can't necessarily trust people you work with and someone like that might have done something at work if he'd be given the chance.

TreesOfGreen99 · 28/12/2024 22:16

I suffer with claustrophobia and struggle to use any toilet with floor to ceiling doors. At least in a strictly women’s space I can put my bag across the door without necessarily my locking it - not something I can do in a unisex loo.

SwanRivers · 28/12/2024 22:17

Bathroom - No.

Floor to ceiling toilets - Yes.

Squidlydoo · 28/12/2024 22:17

My workplace has unisex toilets. I HATE it. They are individual toilet “ rooms” with sinks inside (rather than cubicles) so not the worst set up but still grim. Hygiene is awful.

i notice that several of the toilets are very popular for “number twos”. The (mostly) men will often walk to a “quieter” toilet in a different floor for their daily “deed” which is the worst!

in a public toiletsetting with strangers, there would also be the added vulnerability factor which I would hate - this fortunately isn’t an issue at my workplace

when I have been to unisex toilets in buildings with common sink areas I absolutely HATE it!

MidnightPatrol · 28/12/2024 22:17

TBH what I hate most is that in unisex toilets so often men wee everywhere with no consideration to the ga t the next person might be wanting to sit down.

Soemtimes in women’s toilets this is a problem, but in unisex toilets it’s every time and often really gross and disgusting to deal with if I want to hygenically use the toilet myself.

Tallulahss · 28/12/2024 22:18

It's bad enough dealing with toilet seat left up at home let alone having to touch it in a public toilet!!!!

DorothyStorm · 28/12/2024 22:18

The simple answer is have women's toilets and unisex toilets. Get rid of urinals or box them in.

but people dont want that. They want women to suffer.

Entitled? For wanting single sex spaces?
Are you for real?
Dignity, privacy, safety, the mess that men leave, the men pissing in the toilet with the fucking door open, using the loo with a buggy or wheelchair means leaving the door open so you can see your baby/reach your wheelchair, menstruating, miscarriages, and on and on and on.
And just because we want single sex, if your happy with mixed sex, get yourself into the mens by all means. I will not stop you.

WearyAuldWumman · 28/12/2024 22:18

SwanRivers · 28/12/2024 22:17

Bathroom - No.

Floor to ceiling toilets - Yes.

It makes little difference if they're floor to ceiling. The new build toilets and refurbished toilets in Scottish schools all have floor to ceiling doors.

Intimidation mainly when in a vulnerable position. Agree not all men are likely to cause fear or behave badly but how do you know? Some spaces should be kept seperate and toilets are one of those spaces in my view. Where I worked made a percentage of the toilets mixed but kept a number separate. When looking at the stats after 18mths men used both types of toilets freely but the majority of women avoided the mixed ones and there were queue for the women only facilities. Workforce was split roughly 75% women 25% men so it was women most impacted by the change.

Zebrashavestripes · 28/12/2024 22:19

Public toilets/ loos. They're not bathrooms.

Cherrypickled · 28/12/2024 22:19

Plenty of women hover and piss all over the seats. I don't have a problem with unisex toilets. If it's an enclosed cubicle with a sink then I can't see the issue.

FoxInTheForest · 28/12/2024 22:21

It would be hugely uncomfortable for many reasons. Wee on the seats, toilet seats left up and wee on the floor from a hygiene aspect.
It would make it far easier for creeps to leave discreet cameras, at quiet times of day it would risk assault or the fear of assault.
When changing sanitary items it would mean men can hear the unwrapping etc which would be especially uncomfortable for teen girls getting used to having periods.
As a slightly less common thing it would remove the safe female only space for women to call for support during an uneasy date or similar if it happened in clubs or pubs.

Cinnabarmotheaten · 28/12/2024 22:21

Why are we wanting to make life worse instead of better? Why aren't we ensuring women and girls are safer not exposed to yet more danger and why on earth do we want to add unnecessary fear and anxiety to daily activities like work, travel, shopping?

I hate unisex toilets for all the reasons mentioned by PPs and feel vulnerable and uneasy in communal unisex toilets,

Holidaywarning · 28/12/2024 22:21

Men inevitably piss on toilet seats / floors in any sort of public toilet. I work in hospitality, and have done for years, the ladies toilets are always way cleaner and fresher.
