To think that Greggs is extremely reasonably priced

.. for what it actually sells ?

I my local Greggs last week and there are delicious ready made pizza slices for £2.30 -
large cooked steak pie for under £2

sausage rolls for around £1.20

also the app is very good I think -it breaks down all their foodstuffs individually and you have a free item for every 9th one bought

Come on - to have tasty ready cooked food for these sort of prices - it’s pretty good isn’t it ?

I'm just very disappointed they don't sell anything with a beautiful buttery biscuit base personally.

Something with a cheese cakey base ? Yes agree !

I tried Greggs for the first time last year and was underwhelmed. The steak bake and sausage roll was really disappointing. A Cornish pasty from a local bakery is more expensive but nicer!

Pigeonqueen · 03/12/2024 08:03

Can’t beat a sausage roll from there.

Yes agree that bakes - and definitely things like cheese rolls from local bakeries are often nicer

😂

(I think the OP missed the reference)

Greggs is cheap for a reason, OP. It is, of course, absolutely fine though, unless you are eating every meal, every day from them!

YourSnugHazelTraybake · 03/12/2024 08:04

Depends what you're comparing it to. We've got a chain in the north east ( was locally owned but recently bought out by Asda) that sells sausage rolls at 4 for £1.25, so compared to that Greggs is extortionate and the local one doesn't do very well. We have a second local bakery with several shops that also are cheaper than greggs.

I definitely missed the reference 🤣

I don’t watch cooking programmes - might that be the explanation? 🤣

Count yourself lucky 😂!

It’s the Gregggggg Wallace connection. And sorry to put you off your steak bake with the thought of that disgusting misogynist!

Ffs just when I'd finally got that tune out of my head 😅

I agree OP, I used to have a longish bus commute early in the morning and used to treat myself to a breakfast pot every morning. I don't think they do them now 😔 but it was sausage, bacon, egg, hash brown and beans in a pot for about £1.50, bargain!

The sandwiches are good too.

That breakfast pot sounds gorgeous!

It's great for my autistic children because it's all the same no deviation a sausage roll from London looks the same in Scotland 😂

Newhere5 · 03/12/2024 08:14

Greggs is not tasty.

Gorgonemilezola · 03/12/2024 08:14

But the steak/chicken has walked through the bakes on stilts. I swear I had a steak bake with one piece of meat in it.

Our local butchers sell steak pies for about the same price but they do contain actual pieces of meat.

OnlyFoolsnMothers · 03/12/2024 08:15

It’s bloody brilliant- I take my children there for a juice and cake when out rather than a Gail’s or Pret, save myself about £15

Jumell · 03/12/2024 08:15

I do agree that local bakeries do better on the cheese roll etc side of things

  • but a hot slice of Pepperoni pizza is gorgeous

It's functional food at a relatively affordable price but it's junk food and far cheaper (plus better for you) to make breakfast and lunch at home and take it with you.

We do succumb to Greggs travelling in particular, but it's not good food

helpfulperson · 03/12/2024 08:17

I think they have hit the golden spot of price v quality. It's not the greatest bacon roll or coffee but it's the greatest for £2.85 and it's fine. Same with their fudge doughnuts. I could buy 4 nice ones from greggs or 1 amazing one from a local Baker. I'd prefer the quantity.

Totally agree and think it’s why they’re so successful

A nice greggs bacon roll is lovely. But it all depends. Sometimes I've bought them and the bacon is all dried up, because it's been sitting around too long. Not lovely.
I also like their porridge, and put a pot of their cut fruit into it. Very nice.

mitogoshigg · 03/12/2024 08:20

@OnlyFoolsnMothers

The trick is to do neither - fewer quality meals out is the way to go. My dc are older now but as primary school kids they loved going to a proper restaurant with tablecloths in nice dresses once a month rather than regular junk and hot chocolates out

Wherehavetheyallgone · 03/12/2024 08:21

Cheap food, made to a basement price point. Available almost everywhere, with easy parking, for the convenience of the masses in a hurry. Nothing wrong with that if it's what you're after.

The food feels 'free' as it's bundled with a hot drink. If that stopped, the food wouldn't feel like a bargain at all.

Gillettethebest · 03/12/2024 08:23

I used to eat a greggs every morning as a teen and I survived lol . I was a size 6 until I was about 18 as well but tbf did used to walk loads and play in 3 sports team.

strangely enough now as an adult I rarely go there. Haven’t been for about 2 or 3 years now. I don’t see it as good quality food
But I’m sure there’s worse.

I can imagine it’s convenient for people with large families and kids who need food on the go at a decent price and that’s understandable.

MrsSethGecko · 03/12/2024 08:26

I do love the sausage rolls and Belgian buns. And the Tottenham cake but I can't get it where I live now.
I don't go in very often because my self control disappears around pastry.
