To think that Greggs is extremely reasonably priced

.. for what it actually sells ?

I my local Greggs last week and there are delicious ready made pizza slices for £2.30 -
large cooked steak pie for under £2

sausage rolls for around £1.20

also the app is very good I think -it breaks down all their foodstuffs individually and you have a free item for every 9th one bought

Come on - to have tasty ready cooked food for these sort of prices - it’s pretty good isn’t it ?

The pain au chocolat is very good imho. And they do decaf coffee which a lot of the reasonably priced places do not.

It's a good option to have sometimes. My DS who's 16 loves their bakes. I used to have a steak bake almost everyday when I was pregnant, really craved them.
Now my taste buds have changed and like a pp said, I'd rather have Gail's once a month than a Greggs every week. But I have neither!

itsallabitofamystery · 03/12/2024 09:52

We always go to Greggs when in our local town, as it's much cheaper than a McDonalds. However, I do look at the prices and think jeeeez. But that's because I used to work there, and back then a sausage roll was 32p, cheese and onion were 59p and the dearest was a steak bake at 69p. We do have a £1 bakery in our town which is cheaper, but the kids (and I) prefer Greggs.

TheLimeHedgehog · 03/12/2024 09:53

@Jumell As someone who was a manager at greggs for 10 years, though out multiple shops. Glad you like the prices but they treat their staff like shit, and they break their backs in those places.

But as long as you're happy with cheap food 🙄.

Glad I got out of there, I have some right horror stories of how they treat staff.

TorroFerney · 03/12/2024 09:54

For me it has a hospital association. Had a spate of husband and dad being in hospital when my daughter was about 7/8 and I’d occasionally get her a steak bake if we were late at the hospital.

KimberleyClark · 03/12/2024 09:54

Their coffee is better than Starbucks.

CrispyCrumpets · 03/12/2024 09:56

They used to do a really nice veg pastie, but they changed the recipe to a weird sloppy saucy thing. I've barely bought anything there since. I've been wanting to complain to someone about that for about 15 years now, so thanks for the thread OP.

CrispyCrumpets · 03/12/2024 09:57

They haven't managed to make any headway in the Cornish market. They have much superior pastry goods down there.

Overthebow · 03/12/2024 09:58

It’s fine once in a while but I wouldn’t eat it all the time. I also don’t think the pizza slices are that cheap or nice. The rest is good value though.

SybilTheSpy · 03/12/2024 09:58

I'm partial to one of their sausage rolls if I have a hangover but other than that I'm not a massive fan. Their prices certainly mean they do a roaring trade though.

SybilTheSpy · 03/12/2024 09:59

Although near me I noticed a Baynes bakery recently opened across the road from Greggs and seems to have stolen all their customers!

Deathraystare · 03/12/2024 09:59

I do like their coffee and like the vegan sausage roll to.

Dontcallmescarface · 03/12/2024 10:00

If you like pastry with the barest hint of cheese then opt for 1 of the meat free ones....because IME that's all you'll get. I'd rather pay extra at the local independent bakery and get an actual filling.

pooballs · 03/12/2024 10:00

I love their coffee and sugar strand ring dohnuts. Also their wedges and chicken bites.

YourAmplePlumPoster · 03/12/2024 10:01

They used to do pigs in blankets in their hot counter. Don't know if they still do.

Laughingravy · 03/12/2024 10:02

I used to quite enjoy an occasional Greggs but can't be arsed now they're offering made to order stuff and a selection of hot drinks. There's no joy in waiting behind a paint splattered builder in a hardhat who's ordered food and drinks for the whole crew. For me the USP was something tasty and in and out in a couple of minutes.

pooballs · 03/12/2024 10:03

I also went to a bakery in York that was just like that Greggs but did made to order rolls and baguettes as well. It’s a chain too but I can’t remember what it’s called and google not helping!

GrazeConcern · 03/12/2024 09:46

Would rather have a Gail’s once a month than a Greggs once a week!

Totally agree.

Carouselfish · 03/12/2024 10:07

I once saw a man with his kids at a zoo, wearing a t-shirt covered in the Greggs logo.
I think about him sometimes.

MattSmithsBowTie · 03/12/2024 10:08

Yeah, for what it is it is reasonably priced especially compared to Pret or Gail’s, which are our other options in the nearest town. The sandwiches and coffee are quite nice and my kids love a sausage roll.

WhatKatieDidntDoNext · 03/12/2024 10:11

It's not exactly healthy though is it?
The price is there for a reason- to sell more of it.

goingtohellinahandcart · 03/12/2024 10:12

much prefer greenhalgh's (north west chain of bakeries)

Jumell · 03/12/2024 10:13

NerdWhoEatsMedlar · 03/12/2024 09:35

@Jumell does this thread mean that you have stopped trying to feed yourself for £30 a month?

I haven’t succeeded! I’ve actually spent £40 in 3 weeks

Noodlehen · 03/12/2024 10:14

I wouldn’t call Greggs gorgeous. I used to love the sausage rolls, but they are now just like warm mush and quite inedible.

if I was ever in one then I’d be tempted by a steak bake, or a chicken salad baguette but I’ve no real reason to enter one so I’d rather eat somewhere with better quality food.

Lallydallydune · 03/12/2024 10:14

Tasteless items and bad seating though.
