To think that Greggs is extremely reasonably priced

.. for what it actually sells ?

I my local Greggs last week and there are delicious ready made pizza slices for £2.30 -
large cooked steak pie for under £2

sausage rolls for around £1.20

also the app is very good I think -it breaks down all their foodstuffs individually and you have a free item for every 9th one bought

Come on - to have tasty ready cooked food for these sort of prices - it’s pretty good isn’t it ?

Just grim!

This does irritate me. We shoot. We have pheasants/partridge/hare/rabbit/venison/duck. I've got 6 brace of pheasant hanging in the outhouse ready to prep today that have been shot by us, yet there are SOME people who eat at places like this who would be the first ones to say we're animal abusers and cruel.
Greggs sausage rolls contain 19% meat! And it isn't local, free range and British, it's pink paste from god knows where.

Just a pet peeve. Because we care about what we eat - we only eat free range and well reared animals. The birds from shooting we make sure are dispatched quickly and treated with respect (that's why you don't carry a pheasant by the feet, upside down. It's disrespectful.) and utilised as much as possible. There is a serious disconnect between people and the food they eat that has come about.

OrlandointheWilderness · 03/12/2024 09:02

And actually, not one person on this thread has made a connection between the meat being 'not the best quality' and the fact the animal welfare is a massive part of that.
Cheap, poor quality meat is a result of poor animal welfare standards. Personally I don't think that's acceptable.

This says to me you can afford to not find it acceptable. Not everyone has that luxury

I am loving the mint hot chocolate they have on at the moment. The thing I dislike about greggs is, why can’t they keep the pastries hot? Other bakeries manage it? Is that why they are so cheap, they don’t want to pay the leccy to give me a hot vegan sausage roll? The chances of walking in when the stars are aligned and they just came out the oven are very slim. Plus their veggie choices sandwiches are a bit meh.

It's for tax reasons actually! Serving hot food above a certain temp means there is VAT added.

OrlandointheWilderness · 03/12/2024 09:07

@Declutterthoseemails actually I save a fortune by prepping game - I've done 12 birds yesterday and I paid nothing for them. I've recently had 4 rabbits for £6 which will do lots of portions.
I saw a post on our local FB page from a woman desperate for help with food - couldn't feed her kids and couldn't wait for food bank. I not only offered her 8 pheasants for free but I also offered to come over and show her how to prep them, and put her in touch with someone who could get her a good supply. I was told I could as vile and cruel and instead she'd go to Iceland.
I'm a student nurse. I'm pretty broke most of the time!

Nourishinghandcream · 03/12/2024 09:09

Only ever had the cheese & onion roll/bakethingy and it was disgusting.

Fevertreelover · 03/12/2024 09:12

It’s cheap as it’s made with poor quality ingredients and that’s reflected in the taste.

ClairDeLaLune · 03/12/2024 09:14

I love Greggs! Their sausage rolls are the best! And they do a lot of good works too with giving stuff away to community projects.

Shame about the double g connotation though!

Elisabeth3468 · 03/12/2024 09:14

Yes I love a Greggs bacon roll 🤣 it's about £2.50 with a coffee too. Coffee is obviously not the nicest but it's ok

pumpkinpillow · 03/12/2024 09:16

Their products are heavy on the pastry/dough and light on the meat and even lighter on quality meat.

There are times though when only a Greggs sausage roll hits the spot.

Comedycook · 03/12/2024 09:17

Greggs is great. Was in there the other day with DD and for £4.30 she got a bacon roll, hot chocolate and some gingerbread to take home.

It was absolutely packed in there

MaggieBsBoat · 03/12/2024 09:19

Everything sounds like ChatGPT to me these days - but I’ll bite. (Ba da boooon).

I love a sausage roll.

GETTINGLIKEMYMOTHER · 03/12/2024 09:20

I first tried a Greggs when helping out with Gdcs while dd was away. I wanted to go to the (brilliant!) hardware shop after dropping Gdcs at school, but it didn’t open till 10.

So instead of the Costa, more or less next door, I tried Greggs, where I could sit with the paper - and a coffee and a toasted ham and cheese sandwich (no breakfast in the morning rush) - for a fiver! Talk about a revelation!

Of course it’s not exactly the healthiest, but now and then I really couldn’t give a toss.

LanyardLou · 03/12/2024 09:20

It’s the best place to buy a large takeaway tea. Other places charge a fortune for hot water and a teabag.

Doitrightnow · 03/12/2024 09:21

I don't agree. If I want a cheap crappy sausage roll I can get four in most supermarkets for that price. If I want one with more sausage than upf filler I'm prepared to stretch to £2.50 at the local butcher.

It's rubbish quality junk food.

Stickseas0n · 03/12/2024 09:22

I often go to Glasgow JUST for greggs, it's so cheap and I've never had something from there that I didn't like
Wish I had one that I didn't have to travel 3 hours for 😅

Arseynal · 03/12/2024 09:22

Their meat products are extremely low quality

They keep prices low by dodging VAT in a way that the local independents don’t have the volume of sales to do. That is a big reason why they manage to be cheaper than the nice bakery 3 doors down. Independents have to be fabulous with good quality ingredients but Greggs eg al get away with shite because people like consistency. If you find yourself in a strange town at lunchtime more people will go to Greggs for a taxless low quality item because they will know what they will get than will take a punt at Sandra’s bakery at +VAT more.

Chellybelle · 03/12/2024 09:23

I wouldn't say it's overly expensive but I worked there 20 years ago and the food was a lot cheaper and was higher quality. I remember sausage rolls cost 15p at one point. When I was there, would have been 2003/2004, sausage rolls were 45p and pasties and pies were 65p. I know prices go up, but I really miss the size and quality that you used to get.

If you have an Iceland near you, you can buy Gregg's products frozen and cook them yourself at home.

Greg's festive bakes yum

YourSnugHazelTraybake · 03/12/2024 08:04

Depends what you're comparing it to. We've got a chain in the north east ( was locally owned but recently bought out by Asda) that sells sausage rolls at 4 for £1.25, so compared to that Greggs is extortionate and the local one doesn't do very well. We have a second local bakery with several shops that also are cheaper than greggs.

Is this Cooplands? Are they not nationwide?! I thought they were 😂

MrsSchnickelfritz · 03/12/2024 09:27

I do like a veggie bake from Greggs. Their too good to go bags are pretty decent as well if you want to get them even cheaper.

The one near St pauls Cathedral in London has queues out the door most lunchtimes. I go there at least two or three times a month

Any that I've seen in central London have been packed. Not everyone who work in central London is loaded...there loads of people on low salaries who can't afford the higher end places and just need lunch

I worked there in about 2005/2006 and I remember a chicken bake and sausage roll would cost you £1.10, I remember it because it was such a popular order.
