To think that Greggs is extremely reasonably priced

Jumell · 03/12/2024 07:58

.. for what it actually sells ?

I my local Greggs last week and there are delicious ready made pizza slices for £2.30 -
large cooked steak pie for under £2

sausage rolls for around £1.20

also the app is very good I think -it breaks down all their foodstuffs individually and you have a free item for every 9th one bought

Come on - to have tasty ready cooked food for these sort of prices - it’s pretty good isn’t it ?

This just feels like a blatant PR stunt

Oh I don't know.
Given their fans here, they don't need to do PR!

But it's very odd considering the OP also has a post running asking if she can manage to spend £30 a MONTH on ALL food!

BrightYellowDaffodil · 03/12/2024 10:50

Their coffee is good but good luck at finding much else in there that isn't massively calorific and ultra-processed. Fine if you're eating it occasionally but a lot of people don't.

And I hate to think what the animal welfare standards are to be able to sell that cheaply.

TeaInBed321 · 03/12/2024 10:48

Yeah but the last few times mea I've been, everything's been really cold. I don't want a cold sausage roll or cheese and onion pasty. Petrol stations near me can do lovely warm pasties, so not sure why Gregg's can't!! But maybe I've just been unlucky?!

I think they aren't allowed to warm stuff up for tax purposes, due to having eating areas now? They won't pay it. Somebody may come along to shed some light on this soon.

We have Greggs Outlets in selected areas of Glasgow. No wonder we're all fat bastards

the aggro on my local FB group when ours opened - residents divided between happiness at the news and outraged that this indicated we apparently lived in an area of deprivation....😂

OP if you think a normal greggs is cheap find an outlet!

Now, Lidl on the other hand has cheaper and higher quality bakery items. Their toffee yum yums, chocolate cronuts etc are amazing.

Lidl bakery is God Tier. I’m not sure what kind of penance you must give yourself for buying from there, perhaps a simple prayer of ‘forgive me for I have chosen bad nutrition on this day, and have given into the Satanic Temptation of trans-fats and UPF of the Germanic supermarket variety. To seek redemption, I shall spend a month in the wilderness, sourcing the illustrious One Week Chicken to complement a very filling salad…’.

It isn't anything to do with that, it is about taste. Greggs tastes disgusting to me. I'd rather stuff my face with calories that actually taste nice to me, and taste as advertised! Oh, and a chicken lasts us a day! You have taken what I said completely out of context. How is me talking about eating toffee yum yums and doughnuts akin to a salad? I want what is advertised, not a chicken pasty with no chicken in it, etc🙄

Gonnagetgoingreturnsagain · 03/12/2024 10:56

Their 6 pack mince pies are delicious.

I often get a vegan sausage roll from there with a tea and I was buying more of their single donuts than was good for me so stopped now. Their jam ones are yummy.

In Iceland (not sure if elsewhere) you can buy Greggs frozen steak bakes and vegan sausage rolls etc and cook them at home.

Boutonnière · 03/12/2024 10:56

Gorgonemilezola · 03/12/2024 08:14

But the steak/chicken has walked through the bakes on stilts. I swear I had a steak bake with one piece of meat in it.

Our local butchers sell steak pies for about the same price but they do contain actual pieces of meat.

🤣🤣 I just love that description!

Can’t comment on the veracity of that because the only thing I have tried was a sausage roll and that was a disappointment- managed to be both greasy and dry.

RenoDakota · 03/12/2024 11:02

The sausage, bean and cheese melt is divine. A shop local to me sells even more delicious (various) vegan pasties. But, horses for courses. And of course they are more expensive.
Greggs meal deals are very good too and I am always pleased to see one at a train station before a long journey. Looking at you Newcastle, especially, right by the ticket barriers.

I wasn’t have a go at you, if Greggs isn’t your thing that’s absolutely fine. I’ve long gone off McDonald’s, I’m not sure if it’s age or how they cook it but the childhood days where a Maccies was the ultimate treat is now just a complete disappointment. Sorry, my post was in jest of the UPF cultist, that’s why I didn’t quote your entire post!

Exactly this. If I am in the mood for calorific trans fats than it needs to taste nice, and as advertised. I want sausage in my sausage rolls, meat in the pasties, peaches in the melbas, and not be wading through salty sauce, and cream etc.

Dimpliy · 03/12/2024 11:06

A cheese and onion pasty from Greggs is comfort food but it's low quality carbs, not healthy. So not worth more.

ThatRareUmberJoker · 03/12/2024 11:09

My daughter worked in Greggs for a year and the horror stories I heard. Greggs will never see another penny of my money.

MyNamesGaryAndImAddictedToChips · 03/12/2024 11:10

YourSnugHazelTraybake · 03/12/2024 08:04

Depends what you're comparing it to. We've got a chain in the north east ( was locally owned but recently bought out by Asda) that sells sausage rolls at 4 for £1.25, so compared to that Greggs is extortionate and the local one doesn't do very well. We have a second local bakery with several shops that also are cheaper than greggs.

I remember when Greggs WAS my local bakery in the NE!

Many years later when I first saw one near me (no longer in the NE) I stupidly got excited thinking I could get a stottie. 🙄😔😭

AshLeaf · 03/12/2024 11:10

anyone buying such cheap meat products needs to have a good think about the animal welfare implications of that

That's okay. I'm with you on Mcdonalds, apart from their cappuccino which I do like. They used to do a good sugar ring doughnut which is no longer available as well.

Now, a zinger salad with an extra zinger, with the signature fries from my local KFC I can do (but only on a Friday afternoon, because that's when the good team are on that cook it fresh, and it is never stale at that time).
I definately enjoy a treat, I just have to enjoy it. I am the same with icecream, can no longer eat Ben & Jerry's, but like magnum cracked (both full of crap, but it's the taste if that makes sense). I guess it is all just personal preference, but alot of them need to upt their game imo.

JingleB · 03/12/2024 11:12

Declutterthoseemails · 03/12/2024 07:59

I'm just very disappointed they don't sell anything with a beautiful buttery biscuit base personally.

On the other hand, I’ve never been to the bakery to be greeted by a bald tosser striding about naked with a sock on his todger.

Thank the gods.

Portakalkedi · 03/12/2024 11:20

Haven't ever had more than the odd pasty, but they seem very much on the ball with marketing, so prices are low but the quality of ingredients can't be up to much. They provide countrywide consistency at affordable prices, which is what a lot of people want (as with McDonalds). Had a look in one last week, as I was out and needed to buy a sandwich, but they don't do the nice ones (bloomer bread?) they used to, was all baguettes - no doubt to keep prices down - more bread to less filling, looks bigger, so seems better value.

Seagullproofoldbag · 03/12/2024 11:50

We went in to Greggs in Plymouth during the summer holidays to buy my son a drink from the fridge. After queueing and watching the flies playing in the warm food cabinet, you couldn't pay me to eat anything from there.

user2848502016 · 03/12/2024 12:22

Yes they are good to be fair, their coffee is nice too

Sausagenbacon · 03/12/2024 12:26

Don't get the love for Gail's tbh. There's one just opened in Bristol and it's £££ and a real BHS 1970s vibe.
