To think that Greggs is extremely reasonably priced

.. for what it actually sells ?

I my local Greggs last week and there are delicious ready made pizza slices for £2.30 -
large cooked steak pie for under £2

sausage rolls for around £1.20

also the app is very good I think -it breaks down all their foodstuffs individually and you have a free item for every 9th one bought

Come on - to have tasty ready cooked food for these sort of prices - it’s pretty good isn’t it ?

I really like their baguettes (and the yum yums)
I do get the point about quality over quantity, buy if we need food and aren't somewhere with that choice or haven't the money for a great meal at that point, I'd rather go to Greggs where I can feed the 3 of us for about £13 than to Burger King where I know the bill will be over £30.

My only gripe is that the loos in Greggs are always filthy. A brand new one opened near us. I used to go in quite regularly last winter as it was near one of DS activities and it got too cold to wait in the car.
The first time I went in it was brand new, within about 6 weeks the toilets were vile.

How long have you been working for Gregg's OP?

nameynamenamenamename · 03/12/2024 08:28

They are really decent ingredients too.

I had a tour of one of their factories for work, and I really expected it to be horrible quality with dodgy ingredients and poor quality mechanically reclaimed meat, but they made sausage rolls the exact same way I would make them at home, with the exact same ingredients, just on a much bigger scale.

I would have turned my nose up at them before that tour, but I was converted and really enjoy the occasional one now.

Manypaws · 03/12/2024 08:28

Their flat white coffee is lovely

I had a festive bake the other day and it was horrible. Wonder if they’ve changed the recipe. Full of grey sludge.

AConstipatedAccountantJustCantBudget · 03/12/2024 08:32

It's never going to be the best food ever, but it's very filling and perfectly decent when it ticks all of your boxes for a specific time and/or circumstances.

I agree that the prices are extremely reasonable for what you get. Especially when at a motorway service station: the cost looks almost suspiciously cheap when compared with all the other rip-off options!

oakleaffy · 03/12/2024 08:37

They used to do hot chicken goujons that my Whippet loved! We'd share a packet occasionally.
Wonder if they still do them?

Is that a goujon I can sniff??

The one near St pauls Cathedral in London has queues out the door most lunchtimes. I go there at least two or three times a month

MrsSethGecko · 03/12/2024 08:38

Oh I had a horrible Festive Bake last year. Full of stringy bits.
And they've changed the cheese pasty, they taste vaguely of banana now somehow.

Still stand by the sausage rolls and buns though.

As a family of 5 it would be great if we liked Greg's (as in good value for money). Unfortunately we all hate it, the look and smell turn my stomach, let alone the taste.
We have much nicer, more expensive, bakeries nearby and as it's a treat I don't mind paying the extra.

Pigeonqueen · 03/12/2024 08:03

Can’t beat a sausage roll from there.

They are the height of disgustingness. Just rank

On the other hand the chicken bakes are better than Wenzels.

Greggs still lowest of the bakeries though. I'd rather Gails Wenzels then Greggs

@OnlyFoolsnMothers

The trick is to do neither - fewer quality meals out is the way to go. My dc are older now but as primary school kids they loved going to a proper restaurant with tablecloths in nice dresses once a month rather than regular junk and hot chocolates out

lol- you have zero idea how often i give my kids cake or take them out for
cake but thanks for that parenting advice- next you’ll be telling me they shouldn’t be on screens 7 hours a day

They do some healthier options now. They’re not as nice as Pret or similar but they’re also not £8 for a lunch bowl.

Nolongera · 03/12/2024 08:49

I must be tight as I think Greggs is expensive, the quality was never the best but at least it was cheap. Used to be 4 sausage rolls for a quid.

They have closed most of the independents and small chains down round here now.

Until COVID we had a 24 HR drive through near us, the lines of taxis, police cars and fire engines went on for miles. Might be a slight exaggeration.

eRobin · 03/12/2024 08:50

I know you. You’re the person who made that can I eat off £30 a month and gave a list consisting of biscuits and doughnuts

The trick for me is to buy things from Greggs because I like them.

helpfulperson · 03/12/2024 08:17

I think they have hit the golden spot of price v quality. It's not the greatest bacon roll or coffee but it's the greatest for £2.85 and it's fine. Same with their fudge doughnuts. I could buy 4 nice ones from greggs or 1 amazing one from a local Baker. I'd prefer the quantity.

Exactly this! Plus what someone said up thread about them all being the same - I have a child with sensory/food issues and Greggs sausage roll is a safe food and can be found pretty much anywhere!

Oh yeh, it's probably really shit food, terribly bad for me, etc, but tasty and gentle on the bank account, and using the app I seem to get free stuff all the time!!

#TeamGreggs all the way here

ssd · 03/12/2024 08:55

We have Greggs Outlets in selected areas of Glasgow. No wonder we're all fat bastards

Jollyjoy · 03/12/2024 08:55

I am loving the mint hot chocolate they have on at the moment. The thing I dislike about greggs is, why can’t they keep the pastries hot? Other bakeries manage it? Is that why they are so cheap, they don’t want to pay the leccy to give me a hot vegan sausage roll? The chances of walking in when the stars are aligned and they just came out the oven are very slim. Plus their veggie choices sandwiches are a bit meh.

True, usually pretending to think McDonald's is spelt Macdonald's to show how little they have to do with such an awful place.
