I mean, I very much doubt this will get anywhere in the parliament but nearly 2 mil people signed it in just over 24 hours 😬

A parent keeps sharing it on the class WhatsApp and I want to scream.

TooBigForMyBoots · 26/11/2024 01:24

I'm just waiting for proposals from those who signed the petition.

What do they want? A shortening of the parliamentary term? To weeks? Or months? Short term promises? Populism? Someone whose posters they want to snog this week?

Immaturity, denial and need for instant gratification is being exploited here.🤔

Allswellthatendswelll · 26/11/2024 01:41

Elon Musk is a troll who will have spectacularly fallen out with Trump way before Starmer needs to call an election.

The next US election will be in 2028. The latest date for a UK election is August 2029. A lot can happen in five years!

I'd have liked an election before Liz Truss but that's not how our system works.

Lyannaa · 26/11/2024 03:28

Yes, I agree about Elon Musk. That's a situation which won't ever last. Aside from two narcissists knocking against each other, Musk's ketamine-fuelled tweeting isn't going to serve him well for the long term.

pinotnow · 26/11/2024 06:22

The petition itself is neither here nor there but I am fed up and actually a bit worried about the seemingly relentless attempts to undermine or even bring down this democratically elected government by foreign players and very wealthy people here, with their cause taken up enthusiastically by the media, whose owners are all interlinked to these people anyway.

It's depressing and actually a bit frightening now, not because the petition will work, but because it's becoming very clear that these people will never accept that they lost and everything Labour try and do to make things a little bit better/fairer is going to result in even more cries of outrage, taking whatever form they think of next. Then the problem is that the same hard of thinking people who fell for Brexit will obediently fall into line again and start parroting whatever shit they are told to via the media sources they frequent and then in five years, which is nowhere near long enough to put right the damage inflicted on the country by the right last time around, we will end up with an even worse and further right party (Reform/even more fucked up Tories, whatever shape it takes) and the will be emboldened to be even worse than they were last time around.

I actually feel really gloomy in a way I don't remember feeling before.

BitOutOfPractice · 26/11/2024 06:25

I’m prepared to bet a tidy sum that the people calling for a new election are the same people telling Remainers “You lost. Get over it.”

Months before the GE, the Tories were planning to destabilised the new Labour Govt, started with Hunts unfunded tax cuts and unfunded public sector pay rises, Hunt knew this would be v problematic for Labour.

Then there was the non stop rightwing media attacks on Starmer accepting free football tickets, now this petition.

The right wing will stop at nothing to undermine the new Govt and in doing so, trash the UK ie all of us.

The Losers in July's GE may not have stormed the 'commons but they are trying to overturn a democratically elected Govt, one prominent poster on this thread was calling for a new GE within weeks of July 4th, i believing stating "there are ways to have another election"

We 've had a vote, the people have spoken via our FPTP system and we all have to accept that and stop denying democracy.

What would they do if there was another 'vote and Labour won again?

The 'right wing have never been so dangerous.

It’s not going to happen but it does show the strength of feeling against the labour government.

Who knew that this bunch of morons could be worse than the last ones.

This a one term government for sure.

Only a small amount think they're doing better, the majority think it's worse

dottiehens · 26/11/2024 07:31

No, let KS to go deeper in shit. Otherwise, there would be people moaning they did not get the chance. However, watch for the economy to go to the bin so there is that. We know they are the worse of them all. Just let them and as for the people screaming bots and talking about evil Russia. May be just do not use their tactics of calling people bots when they are protesting. Or in short silencing people who do not agree with the agenda.

I feel like your post and view is out of date. Everywhere in Europe and the west is going the other way. Understanding the need to represent all sides and listening to the concerns of real people.

The conservatives will hope Labour won’t damage the economy and country’s prospects too much - they historically always have to clear up the mess.

I am not inspired by Labour to deliver anything beyond more taxes and more debt. I can’t even see them covering the basics such as healthcare, because until you pause the influx of people arriving here to live, you have no chance at all of delivering better services. It becomes a bottomless pit.

In the next five years we are going to see mass homelessness, a ballooning welfare state, a social care crisis deepening to dangerous levels and the entire country grinding to a slow halt.
And a hell of a lot of angry Labour voters that feel very betrayed.

It is that serious.

localnotail · 26/11/2024 07:40

I'm so incredulous at it, and even if these 2mln people are real people (and not some far right/ Russian bots which I think they are) - I cant believe British public is readily swallowed shit that was Conservative government of the last few years (Liz Truss, I mean come on, she fucked it up for everyone, not just rich farmers!) and being super upset over this government trying to sort out the mess left by Tories.

I would say the same to them as Brexiters were saying to me - stop being a sore loser, you lost, get on with it.

A lot of them are furious Labour voters. They didn’t get the change, the uplift, the hope for better that they were hoping for. That is the reason why they voted Labour in the first place. It certainly wasn’t for Starmers leadership skills.

This is a protest petition. No one expects it to work, but it is a sign that the country is deeply unimpressed. I believe in democracy. I believe Labour should remain in office. Of course people have got what they voted for, and now have to live with the consequences.

I find it very surprising that anyone believed Labour would be able to magically fix 14 years of damage in a few months. They inherited a mess, no money, nothing works. They are doing all the right things tbh.

Were people equally angry about Brexit? No one complains about it even though it fucked up a lot of things for us. Or Liz Truss, how can any party recover from that? But no, let's blame Labour

You do understand they have made it worse. Inflation to increase, unemployment to increase, interest rates to increase. You’re in a minority thinking this is the right thing to do. Although I guess you’re not losing your job and can afford the mortgage.

sharpclawedkitten · 26/11/2024 08:56

JusteanBiscuits · 25/11/2024 08:49

Yet after the result of a non legally binding referendum, we are all told "you lost, get over it".

Yes and as I recall, there were about 7 million signatures on the Brexit referendum petition who just got laughed at and ignored when the previous government pursued the most Brexity Brexit it could.

It's the usual Labour have to be perfect, the Tories can be utterly crap before people get fed up with them.

I do think reducing the NI threshold by so much is a mistake and an extra 1p on income tax would have been better and if they were truly listening to people they would think about adjusting their plans. But I don't disagree with anything else they've suggested - even the farmers IHT thing will only affect a few people a year.

This.

It takes time to fix 14 years of poor management. Surely no one expects results in a few months.

GettingStuffed · 26/11/2024 09:08

It took 14 years to wreck our country and they expect labour to fix it in months. Unbelievable.

After 14 years, debt to GDP has gone from 65% to 100%, public services are wrecked - name one that works? the latest "scandal" is childrens services.

UK Gilts, once the gold standard for stability and value, have tanked, we ve now got worse government borrowing costs than Italy!

You perhaps will argue that we've had Covid and Ukraine, very true but the Tories were in for 10years before any of that and debt to GDP went from 65 to 84%... and Gilts yields still low, it took Liz Truss to treble Government borrowing costs, that alone is costing the UK billions extra each and every year.

Then there is the economic hit Brexit has cost us.

Yet you and others have the nerve to say "the Tories clear up the mess Labour leave"

The clear evidence is that the tories have made the UK far far worse.

Some people still seem to be trapped in the mindset that things can improve without any cost at all.

You conveniently left out the financial crisis Labour caused in 2008 after a huge sending spree that left our country completely exposed when the financial crash happened. It took nearly a decade to recover. Just in time for the pandemic to hit, which cost trillions of pounds. We then had the Russian war in Europe and the cost of living that it created.

Please stop rewriting history.
People voted hoping it would make things better in their lives, and they are just realising the reverse is true. They will become poorer, and the money created will be absorbed by our bloated public services and until we are ready for real root change this country will continue to decline.

And Brexit referendum wasn't binding - whereas a General Election is a legally binding, democratic process. It's interesting to see just how many people don't believe in democracy in this country.

Call for the resignation of PM, sure. But to call for a whole new GE shows how little they they think of democracy.
