It's a shame that Hollywood results in women ruining their looks whilst the men carry on regardless (Wicked)

I've been looking at videos of the lovely Cynthia from the Wicked movie a few years ago. She looked wonderful and healthy. Now her face is all sharp angles. The same for Ariana who looks dangerously thin. I've heard many say that it's the gruelling film schedules etc but I don't see the male members looking like a lettuce leaf would fill them up.
Isn't it sad that actresses still feel this need to look a certain way whilst men don't

It's very shit. And I'm sick of seeing older male actors alongside young female ones, when older female actors would be amazing in the parts.
But even on here there are threads full of women talking about appearance, aging etc.. men don't really do it

Catza · 23/11/2024 20:29

What about all the men in superhero movies who have to go through months of dieting and workouts and then dehydrate themselves before a naked torso scene. Don't fool yourself. It's not just women.

Coolasfeck · 23/11/2024 20:38

I saw the movie earlier today. DD and I really enjoyed it but there’s no denying how distractingly thin Ariana is due to the outfits she has to wear. Cynthia’s character requires more clothing but you can see when they are side by side that she’s the same size as Ariana meaning she’s also very very thin.

I know many people are naturally thin but neither of these two were this thin a few years ago. Either the filming schedule was too harsh, or they were encouraged to lose weight, or are codependent in some way. They are both extremely talented, their singing voices are amazing, but they are wasting away.

stargazerlil · 23/11/2024 20:39

Err two words Mickey Rourke.

Vespanest · 23/11/2024 20:41

Cynthia is a fitness freak, I saw her in March at the palladium and she looked great, she also looked good at the Met gala. This seems more to do with the release and the PR maybe even anxiety than the requirements of the movie. I wish they'd just leave her alone

desidi · 23/11/2024 20:41

it's extremely sad and I hope Ariana Grande is getting support. Way back in the 1930's, a teenage Judy Garland was also going through eating issues whilst filming the Wizard of Oz.
Sad that nothing has changed in nearly 100 years.

Arianna Grande has been skeletal her entire career!

ByCoolWriter · 23/11/2024 20:45

Exactly so. Cynthia looks toned but still she's lost a lot of weight.
There also seems to be this requirement to act vacant and dumb. I've seen lots of squeals and over the top facial expressions which totally show them as women of no gravity. Sadly.

I haven’t seen Wicked but I’m finding myself turning off a lot of TV/films lately because of the weird way that both the female/male actors look. I can’t get into something where the actors have had plastic surgery/Botox/fillers. It’s so distracting and people cannot act if they can’t show genuine expression in their face.

This was her when younger. She doesn’t look skeletal at all, just healthily slim.

True, and it's obvious that many of them are using steroids to bulk up in a relatively short timeframe.

Still, the pressure on women in film to be thin and wrinkle-free is staggering. A fairly average looking actor in his 50's will inevitably be paired romantically with an actress 20 years his junior.

No, not as thin as she looks now. I was taken aback by how thin she is.

icelolly12 · 23/11/2024 21:00

Pretty sure Ariana Grande has had disordered eating for a number of years. She's starting to look worryingly ill now and like she should be in hospital not undertaking a gruelling schedule.

isitsnowingyett · 23/11/2024 21:03

I have to agree that both of them are extremely thin now especially Cynthia from how she was before. Sure some men do bulk up or lose for parts eg Denzel Washington in the latest Gladiator losing weight and Paul Mescal bulking up but sadly for women it's an overall look as opposed to being for a role.

BobbyBiscuits · 23/11/2024 21:06

She keeps saying she was at her most unhealthiest when she was a little bigger. She's absolutely kidding herself and is a really bad role model. And adult women of her size would not be able to menstruate. She looks like her BMI is around 13 which is hospital admission/sectioning weight. Immediately life threatening. How can they let this happen that she's classed as the epitome of beauty?

YankSplaining · 23/11/2024 21:10

I agree that they both look very unhealthy. What I find so weird is that when male actors lose a ton of weight, it’s seen as “dedication to his craft.” Christian Bale’s gone on what amounts to starvation diets for a few different roles. Joaquin Phoenix lost about three and a half stone for “Joker,” gained it back, and then lost it all again for the sequel. That’s equally unhealthy, but it’s always the actresses who get judged for drastic weight loss. (Not aiming this criticism at you, OP.)

LoonaBaboona · 23/11/2024 21:17

For women being thin and eternally young seems to be a permanent requirement. Men do it as and when a role dictates.
TBH I don’t know which is more unhealthy.

desidi · 23/11/2024 21:17

scary thing is how desirable this look is to
some people. When my adult daughter weighed under six stones and hadn't had a period for nearly two years, we lost count of the number of
people who told her she looked amazing.
She didn't. She looked poorly.

I never get why Hollywood doesn't just use actors of the size/shape/look they need for the role. As it is both sexes end up having to starve themselves / put weight on etc for given roles.

It is something both sexes have to suck up and is wrong imo.

But you're right this applies to both sexes but women have to be the victim in all situations for some reason which simply detracts from the issue.

Tom Hanks credits his years of crazy yo-yo dieting for his T2 diabetes diagnosis. He was also diagnosed with heart disease at a relatively young age. And Matt Damon damaged his kidneys by starving himself for a movie role early in his career.

Sadly a lot of these people, male and female, are quite unhealthy as evidenced by autopsy reports released after an untimely death. It's a brutal and competitive business that's not conducive to a healthy lifestyle.

Yes but they don't do it for a specific role do they? I can think of Renee in Bridget Jones and Monster with Charlize Theron where they did it for roles. The rest ? It's all about looking good on the red carpet.

Apate · 23/11/2024 21:21

Nicole Kidman looked worryingly thin on Graham Norton last night.

Bonjovispyjamas · 23/11/2024 21:24

Ariana looked a perfectly healthy weight in the Mika video for Popular song, definitely not skeletal.

MarvelJesus · 23/11/2024 21:24

It seems to be the way that as female actors age they turn to extreme thinness to try to appear youthful. It’s a pattern you can see with the majority, sadly.
