It's a shame that Hollywood results in women ruining their looks whilst the men carry on regardless (Wicked)

I've been looking at videos of the lovely Cynthia from the Wicked movie a few years ago. She looked wonderful and healthy. Now her face is all sharp angles. The same for Ariana who looks dangerously thin. I've heard many say that it's the gruelling film schedules etc but I don't see the male members looking like a lettuce leaf would fill them up.
Isn't it sad that actresses still feel this need to look a certain way whilst men don't

It's Ozempic.

The trend for thinness in Hollywood is way older than Ozempic (which isn’t the magic fat blaster some people think it is).

Well it is choice there has to come a point where people are responsible for their own actions and stop blaming others, women have as much brain capacity to think as men although it is seemingly so less and less these days

They can choose not to do it

Easier said than done when we live in a patriarchy that rewards those that conform

There are lots of women both in and out of the entertainment industry that do not do this

Using patriarchy is not excuse for not making your own choice, each year women seem to be losing their capacity to think

scary thing is how desirable this look is to
some people. When my adult daughter weighed under six stones and hadn't had a period for nearly two years, we lost count of the number of
people who told her she looked amazing.
She didn't. She looked poorly.

I completely agree. When my daughter was in the throes of anorexia, she had adult females praising her willpower. This when she already had stunted growth, no periods and weighed 6 stone.

desidi · 23/11/2024 22:29

for the poster who said Judy Garland didn't have eating issues when she did The Wizard Of Oz.
You're wrong. She did.
But you're correct that they were created by the studio:

Crushed23 · 23/11/2024 22:33

It will always be a desirable look for some people, because in some circles it's a way of demonstrating willpower, hard work, commitment etc. If it was easy to be stick thin, it wouldn't bring with it high status and admiration.

desidi · 23/11/2024 22:34

@Pomegranatecarnage feel for you, looks like we've both walked the same journey.
My daughter is doing much better now.
I hope yours is too.

Nicole Kidman looked worryingly thin on Graham Norton last night.

Also looked like she was wearing a mask, shes beautiful but her face looked odd-had too much work done on it I think, really sad women feel they have to do this

SnapdragonToadflax · 23/11/2024 22:46

I think sadly they're deep in a competitive eating disorder. Arianna has always been slim and petite but not skeletal. Cynthia used to be fit and muscular.

The interviews where they're fawning over each other are so bizarre. I hope they both can get some peace away from each other and get well after this publicity trail is over.

InWithThePlums · 23/11/2024 22:51

KrisAkabusi · 23/11/2024 20:42

I know many people are naturally thin but neither of these two were this thin a few years ago

Arianna Grande has been skeletal her entire career!

No she hasn’t. Certainly not like this.

PerditaLaChien · 23/11/2024 22:55

I’m finding myself turning off a lot of TV/films lately because of the weird way that both the female/male actors look. I can’t get into something where the actors have had plastic surgery/Botox/fillers. It’s so distracting and people cannot act if they can’t show genuine expression in their face.

This, i find it weird watching all the inflated lips talking. Real people don't look like that and its a bit uncanny valley to me.

InWithThePlums · 23/11/2024 22:59

EmotionalSupportPotato · 23/11/2024 22:04

Like this one I guess. Focused on appearance

We should be allowed to talk about industry and societal pressure to be skinny and get a shit ton of plastic surgery imo.

Cynthia and Ariana are both clearly very underweight. Some teenage girls who watch Wicked will see that as aspirational, which isn’t the fault of the actors at all, but I do think it can be pointed out.

Moonlightstars · 23/11/2024 23:02

Disturbia81 · 23/11/2024 20:06

It's very shit. And I'm sick of seeing older male actors alongside young female ones, when older female actors would be amazing in the parts.
But even on here there are threads full of women talking about appearance, aging etc.. men don't really do it

Exactly all the people on here going on about Botox or fillers or whatever Re completely buying into the bullshit.

Well, funnily enough, amphetamines will give you issues with eating. She was doled out pills by the studios - it is well known that is how her addictions began.
She was 16 when she was cast, playing a younger character and the studio manipulated her appearance in multiple ways, particularly with doling out the uppers and downers, and insisted she constantly diet even before she landed this starring role.

So I would hardly say she had eating issues. She was given them.

Preppingdonkey · 23/11/2024 23:04

Ariana looks very different facially at the moment, is it her weight?

SwedishEdith · 23/11/2024 23:07

Nicole Kidman looked almost unrecognisable last night. I think her husband is the same though, having tons of surgery. If you have no one to tell you to "Stop", you can't see when you no longer look like you anymore.

The bleached eyebrows make a hell of a difference. Those, the blond hair, and the light make up style and colours she is using make her very singular in tone, but she has these really dark brown eyes that now standout more.

Preppingdonkey · 23/11/2024 23:08

Yep, I used to work in a designer shop on Bond st, one of my colleagues had an eating disorder & was often hospitalised. She was a fantastic saleswoman & in part it was her look, our rich customers used to look at her in admiration & trusted her judgement.

Preppingdonkey · 23/11/2024 23:09

@SummaLuvin she looks like she’s about to burst into tears constantly!

Even so, it is fecking Ozempic.

LikeWhoUsesTypewritersAnyway · 23/11/2024 23:11

I kind of agree in general @ByCoolWriter but what's wrong with how Cynthia looks? Confused

Also, Ariana has always been super teeny tiny. No different to how she's always been.

I think she’s had fillers and they stand out more due to the weight loss. Plus there’s the eyebrows.

This is just not true. Ariana used to look a healthy weight. Cynthia did too, and is now just as tiny.
