Horrendous

Goodness me. The poor woman. I'm glad she feels able to talk about it now, hopefully it will give any others the confidence to come forward.

AhBiscuits · 05/12/2024 08:05

I bet there are a lot of men quaking in their boots right now, wondering if they are going to be cancelled for all the bad shit they did.

Tbh there are probably loads that are secretly relieved that GW is more high profile than them and getting it with both barrels, at the moment while they've been getting away with the same thing.

I really hate pile-ons.

One of the things that strikes me is that he isn't the only guilty party. His behaviour was allowed to build to the point that it has. They say he was given a strong formal warning some years ago, but that wasn't followed up by action. To my mind the people handling this were just as bad - if not worse - than him. They should also face sanction.

I don't disagree - it certainly sounds like someone (or a few people) have ignored complaints and watched this happen. Hopefully it will all come out in the investigation.

https://www.dailymail.co.uk/news/article-14160729/bbc-masterchef-encouraging-gregg-wallace-behaviour-former-winner-claims.html

Former Masterchef winner Mat Follas has now opened up on his experience on the show in 2009 saying that Wallace's alleged behavior was 'allowed' and 'certainly not discouraged'.

He described Wallace as 'loud' and 'inappropriate' and claimed that show runners have 'spent 20 years encouraging the behavior'.

Posting on his Instagram page, he wrote:

'I may regret posting this but let's have some balance rather than sanctimonious b*.

'Anyone who has been in the studio is not surprised at the revelations about Gregg's behavior in the studio. Anyone who has been there knows there was an environment where Gregg was allowed, encouraged... certainly not discouraged.

'IMHO the blame is cultural they hired a loud, inappropriate, funny man to perform, they have spent 20 years encouraging the behaviour.

'He should have been censured when I was on the show 16 years ago but no one did, that I saw... including the BBC observers that were often present.'

Mr Follas added that he had no comment on other behaviour Wallace has been accused of outside the studio.

'It takes huge bravery to step forward and he deserves what comes if they are accurate,' he continued.

'I guess that the end of my chances of reappearing on the show.'

BBC show makers 'spent 20 years encouraging Gregg Wallace's behaviour'

Greg Wallace, 60, is facing a mountain of allegations from women who have continued to come forward with allegations of sexual misconduct in recent days.

I heard steven fry make a joke about a penis to a woman who was talking about licking an ice cream. This was on r4 at 6.30pm

Greg (g) would now be getting crucified for that, in the pile on.

WiddlinDiddlin · 05/12/2024 21:35

It isn't just about the content of the joke though, it's about the tone, the recipients, the context, the teller themselves.

Stephen Fry making a willy joke to a room full of people in a sound studio isn't remotely the same as Ggreg Wallace muttering something dirty about his own cock in a womans ear when she's alone or no one else can hear him.

God yeah, poor picked-on Gregg 🙄. He's the one we should be feeling sorry for in this shit show.

I thought steven fry's comment was appalling as well fwiw, but its all hindsight with Gregg.

I honestly don't know what you mean by that. People were complaining at the time.

Movinghouseatlast · 05/12/2024 22:05

I work in a similar industry. There is a man I work with who.has always been a bully. 20 years ago people complained and were ignored. Even now people talk about how awful this guy is. Management know how people feel and do nothing. I actually walked away because of him,but most people can't afford to lose their livelihood when the powers that be won't fo anything. It's rife everywhere I'd say.

Calliopespa · 05/12/2024 22:05

I felt there was a lot of vitriolic pile-on at first, but I hadn’t envisaged the sort of comments and incidents that are being alleged.

Thought it would be more boyish, but some of it is pretty vile.

That said, I do find all the hate a bit much. He needs reprimanding if true, but why all the relish and delight from some? I just think these situations are very sad. Sad for the victim, sad for the perpetrator’s family, and sad, in a way, that anyone would feel the need to behave like that.

Thats a fun show I've just listened to it and will listen to the rest of the series.

Stephen didn't mention penis's (Phil Wang made a far less subtle reference right near the start of the show) at all.

Susie Dent (I think, well it wasn't Lucy Beaumont and there were no other women on the show) suggested a new word 'licksation' or 'lixation' theres no info on how it would be spelled... to describe the situation when you've got an icecream and someone wants a taste of it, they have a 'lixation' .. a fixation on licking your icecream.

Stephen asked: "could this be applied to anything else?'

Thats it. Yes, of course the innuendo is there but it's supplied by your mind, he could have been referring to Lollipops or icelollies or any number of other things.

He didn't make it personal, he didn't suggested he had a lixation towards Susie Dent or anything she might have, it wasn't a whispered thing in an empty green room or as he brushed his genitals unnecessarily up against someones bottom 'in passing'...

And really quite crucially it was on a show about words and their meanings, use and creation, hosted by Susie Dent and Phil Wang.

Absolutely fucking worlds apart from Ggreg saying to Katy Brand that he'd 'love to munch the living daylights out of your.... little tart'.

I was more surprised that the word 'twat' was acceptable pre watershed Radio4 language (Phil Wang).

I think a great deal of people found him wholly unlikeable prior to any of this, so it's not surprising there is an air of relish.
You see plenty of times on discussion threads, 'Please don't tell me there's anything bad rumoured about random national treasure type. I would be gutted!' Never once saw any posts like that about GW.

Lisa Faulkner reposted a statement from John on her Instagram a couple of days ago and he didn't say he'd complained, it was along the lines that he would be very upset if people didn't have an amazing time on the show and he wasn't saying anything else until the investigation was complete.

Or simply in heavy duty arse covering mode having taken the £££ for working closely alongside him for 20 years.

Its not like he was only involved in a couple of episodes or lacking in power in his own right.

I don’t think kbthey can do that. She was too outspoken a voice in this drama. It would look like pushing him off the parapet to make space for herself.

I agree. I find it a bit reprehensible when people in the same industry as him suddenly become very vocal. Is this because they want to save their own skin in a very public way? I ask this because if it was me I wouldn't be posting my experience on social media I would contribute to the investigation by telling the investigators. Every single person is entitled to the dignity of a proper investigation. It is one thing to express disgust with his actions, but the hateful tone of the pile-on is almost as bad as his initial misconduct.
