No, the whole issue of "things were different then" is irrelevant to the case of Wallace and his behaviour. It was not acceptable "in his day" and it isn't acceptible now (and up until the recent publicity his behaviour certainly hadn't changed). Ditto the classist bollocks that he is "working class" implying its acceptable to working class people (also not true then or now).

All the guff about children's seatbelts and images is simple whataboutery and nothing to do with Wallace whatsoever.

Again, I reiterate I specifically said I am nit saying it usctelevant in THIS particular instance. I’m not sure his to say that more clearly.

But specific instances don’t exist in vacuums, and thought needs to be given to how far it gets taken.

Sorry “ not saying it is relevant.” And “ not sure HOW to say that more clearly.”

Typing very rapidly and distracted with tasks so missed edit window!

Innocent until proven guilty? No, "kill the pig, slit it's throat, drain it's blood".
Much as I hate game shows and talentless contests, and this creature seems and sounds to be odious he has not to our knowledge committed a crime, and is subject to.an internal enquiry and whatever punishment may be decreed IF found responsible.

His classist, sexist and ageist comments are beneath contempt.

OPsSockpuppet · 02/12/2024 19:48

Calliopespa · 02/12/2024 19:18

I don’t really think of it from the excuses pov; it’s more thinking about the retrospective aspect from a policy perspective. I - or you - could be doing things seemed normal now but which might be frowned on in years to come. I gave the example of posting on SM when it involves other people’s information. It’s important when dealing with these types of things that we think what we are establishing as acceptable reaching backwards. I highly suspect any of this business will be too recent and too clear cut for it to be an issue, but was simply raising that there is an issue around how things are framed.

Hmmm. But the social norms you refer to are generally shared by the majority; that’s what makes them norms. Sharing family photos online is mainstream now (though it might not be in the future, true). But making people uncomfortable with sexualised comments is unacceptable now and was unacceptable 20 years ago. His behaviour is being commented upon because it’s outside the accepted norm.

I agree with this.

Also, I think there is usually (not always but usually) a certain degree of rough justice in the world.

So people who make stupid mistakes but who take responsibility and are otherwise fairly ok people, get a second chance.

Eg Hugh Grant, and Ant McPartlin.

People who are unremittingly awful to everyone on their way up and don’t accept responsibility eventually get their comeuppance;

Eg Philip Schofield, Huw Edwards, and now GW.

It’s obviously taking far too long to identify and expose the second group but it’s a balance between people being unfairly accused and people getting what they deserve!

crosstrainerornament · 02/12/2024 15:51

I'm waiting for a big confessional where he explains away his awful behaviour.
The only question is which way he goes?

Addiction? Sex, drugs, or alcohol?

Mental health breakdown? (One that lasted 20 years and insults anyone with genuine MH issues)

He's already tried to use autism. Hmm

the80sweregreat · 03/12/2024 03:25

I bet a few people are worried that things might be leaked about them now.
I can't see GW going down without a fight and I wouldn't put anything past him now his been exposed. A few dirty tactics and ' tip offs' and more stories might emerge to cause damage limitation / revenge.

WiddlinDiddlin · 03/12/2024 04:16

DP said to me tonight...

Most of the complaints we're hearing about now are pretty old stuff, from before he got warned...

So barring the letter from Dawn Elrick and the Big Weekend complaints from 2019 (which reasonably, may actually have occurred prior to his warning in 2018, given how far ahead some things are filmed)...

Why's it come up now. Is it unreasonable to think that we haven't heard about some fairly major issue/complaint from much more recently that is being investigated and can't yet be published?

NigelHarmansNewWife · 03/12/2024 07:10

@WiddlinDiddlin it's news now because BBC News have been investigating.

yaki · 03/12/2024 09:06

There are decent mannerly men out there . But like women, they need to be courageous in calling out uncouth lecherous, demeaning behaviour.

I think it's s bit like not supporting victims of bullying in school or the workplace for fear of becoming the victim - or getting the sack etc

Boys and young men need to be more prominent positive role models in tbe media. Not just pop ,sportsmen or porn actors
But that's a whole new topic .

yaki · 03/12/2024 09:07

Does GW behave like this at family get togethers ?

Novaavon · 03/12/2024 09:10

We even have Downing St and politicians commenting on Gregg Wallace and whether Masterchef should be shown. I couldn't give a fuck what they think about it but I do give a fuck about what they're going to do about us being able to get a GP appointment, an ambulance in an emergency, enough teachers who are properly supported to give our young people a decent education. This country really is in an absolute mess.

the80sweregreat · 03/12/2024 09:16

Downing Street getting involved was odd. However, if they had stayed quiet I suppose someone wouldn't have been happy. They can never win.

You do realise that Downing Street can both have an opinion on sexual harassment and work towards improving the NHS and education? It's not either or.

Novaavon · 03/12/2024 09:25

@Motnight yes I do, but I do also think that the current situation is that Wallace is being investigated by the BBC and has not been either sacked or charged with any offence. Surely the government should not prejudge a situation?

I'm no fan of Wallace and if he has done the things that he is accused of then there should be repercussions. But I'm not in favour of trial by media.

crumblingschools · 03/12/2024 09:44

@Novaavon didn't the MP comment after GW posted that misogynistic video on Instagram which couldn't be interpreted in any other way

Paddymcpaddy · 03/12/2024 10:27

Boomer55 · 28/11/2024 16:57

Yeah, a few off colour remarks/jokes to grown women has caused some sort of meltdown.

ok then, 🙄

I was being sarcastic! He’s an absolute bully and knobhead, but then I have always thought he was a bit of a creep.

Swivelhead · 03/12/2024 23:30

He's an absolute bully and knobhead

Is this satire?

MissTrip82 · 04/12/2024 06:38

Novaavon · 29/11/2024 17:37

He hasn't been found guilty of anything. I'm not a fan but being innocent until proven guilty is reasonable and it's what our justice system is based on. I'm not a fan of trial by media.

And I'd like to see the rest of the series of Celebrity Masterchef. If others don't want to they don't have to watch.

This again.

It’s always very telling that the only time
people discover an interest in the presumption of innocence is when the wronged individuals are women or children.

In fact this maxim applies in one place and in one place only: a criminal court. It is
demonstrably not the basis of our legal system. It applies in a criminal court, and nowhere else, because that’s the forum in which the state can employ its ultimate sanction. Anywhere else, literally anywhere, you are absolutely free to decide if you think someone has done what they are accused of.

AllIsMerryAndBright · 04/12/2024 08:54

Melanie Sykes is saying he's the reason she quit TV She doesn't strike me as particularly middle class...

VictoriaSpungecake · 04/12/2024 11:10

I really hate pile-ons.

One of the things that strikes me is that he isn't the only guilty party. His behaviour was allowed to build to the point that it has. They say he was given a strong formal warning some years ago, but that wasn't followed up by action. To my mind the people handling this were just as bad - if not worse - than him. They should also face sanction.

TonTonMacoute · 04/12/2024 11:22

Gregggg is a distraction.

The real issue is how big organisations handle accusations like these. Answer: extremely badly.

There have been several stories recently of NHS staff complaining about the behaviour of male consultants/senior male staff. The BBC has a long history of ignoring complaints. Women who work in big City firms have long lists of vile behaviour.

Greggg should just be the first in a long line of men who need to be shamed publicly for behaving like creepy twats in the workplace, and of abusing their position of power.

ineedtowomanup · 04/12/2024 21:01

Jeez some of the descriptions in this are just awful. Poor woman.
