To have the dog in the bed with us?

I bathed her this morning for the first time in well over a year as she rolled in poop. This was the result… she sleeps under the duvet with us every night.. how am I not ill? 🥴

Sorry, but I think that it is really unhygienic to have dogs under the covers in bed with you.

Checkedoutblanket · 19/11/2024 16:22

I loved my dog sleeping in the bed between dh and I - unfortunately as his heart condition developed he stopped getting in - he's gone now and I feel so sad - I miss that wee face in the morning.

But that was why the OP washed the dog?!

I think everyone who owns a dog would wash them if they had shit on them…. 🤣

How do you know your dog hasn't rolled in shit if you weren't watching it ?

Dogs aren't very clean animals. They eat and roll in shit. Sometimes when you are watching. And sometimes when you aren't. They also pick up ticks and fleas which can transfer themselves to your bedding. And they slobber, chew stuff and sometimes piss, crap and vomit and shed loads of hair because they are dogs.

People can have them in their beds if they want. That's absolutely their business. But what they can't do is pretend it is clean and hygenic. Because it objectively isn't.

WiddlinDiddlin · 19/11/2024 16:41

Dogs who roll in shit are... covered in shit. That is how you know @GasPanic

Most dogs don't eat harmful shit, ie carnivore shit, the exception being cat shit and thats because humans feed cats a piss poor diet that leaves a lot of undigested protein in the crap. They mostly eat herbivore shit which is a natural part of a scavengers diet and where they get beneficial bacteria... however they can only do this if they have access to it.

Mine eat zero shit, they have no access to cat shit or herbivore shit.

They will on occasion roll in a fox shit, this is evident because:

  • they stink like fox crap
  • they have fox crap on them

If this occurs, they get a bath. Or three.

They don't pick up fleas and ticks because I use preventative collars and treat the house for fleas regularly.

They do shed hair and skin.So do I. I remove this by vacuuming and washing bedding.

Piss/crap/vomit - again yes they do do those things, so do I. We all attempt to do them in the correct places, which is not in my bed/on my floors.

SO no they're not 100% hygenic, sterile, crud free. But they're not significantly more disgusting than humans either.

Because if they’ve rolled in shit, they stink of shit and you can literally see it on them after they’ve rolled in it? My dog loves a fox poo roll and comes gleefully bounding up to me to show me the damage. Then when we get home, the glee quickly fades when he realises we are heading straight for the shower…

@GretchenWienersHair but why does what other people bother you so much that you think you can pass judgment
Your seem rather insufferable

Because they’re nose blind and it’s other people that have to suffer their scent.

Full seeping Anal glands in your bed. Sticky dog knobs on your sheets. Just no!

Dramatic

I'm a cat person too. They snuggle on me every night. Plus cats don't smell. I love sniffing them 😅

Cats fo have a rather distinct smell

If your dog has either of those issues you should take them to a vet...

Surely you must just smell like dog all day long.

Do you wear your bedding as clothes?

Thank goodness she found you, lovely person x

Thank you. Honestly I feel like the lucky one to have had her. She was the best dog.

I know, dog owners houses and clothes smell of dog. So if it was a goat, everyone would say fgs don’t stink of goat but because it is a dog it is somehow different, plus they want to bring their animals to shops, hotels and cafes, so won’t even leave them in their stinky home whete at least others have a choice to visit or not.

If this is one thread that emphasises the need for emoji reactions on MNet this is so it.
Think I'd have worn out the 'crying with laughter' smiley at some of the dramatic, hysterical, nonsense over the last 3 pages.

😂

Do you apply that logic to people with BO? Strong perfume? Washing powders? Food smells? The list of smells go on and on - surely you can’t object to all of them….

Also , why does your need trump other people? If other people have to ‘ suffer’ the smell of dogs then what happens if the dog people have to ‘suffer’ smells that they find offensive!?

Where does it end??

Maybe people need to learn and accept that they are not the centre of everyone’s world and they just have to get on with it. Like everybody else.

My dog had a really lovely mild doggy smell, just between his ears, it was so comforting - but he often just smelled of my perfume which the kids loved too. I miss my dog so much. Sure he stood on poo but I cleaned it off, when you love someone - you do things like that - but I respect that others don't want to.

I honestly can’t believe some of these people go outside their front door and don’t just sit hyperventilating in their sterile homes about people letting their dogs sleep in the bed 🤣🤣

StopStartStop · 19/11/2024 19:09

My childhood pet dog slept on my bed. Fine. We were both warm and still.
However, after she died, she still slept on my bed.
Every night I'd here her trot up the corridor to my room and feel her jump onto the bed and curl up as she always had.

Frightened me half to death. I slept with the lights on for a year.

StopStartStop · 19/11/2024 19:09

hear!

Whippetlovely · 19/11/2024 19:14

Our dog sleeps on the bed but not under the covers, he hardly sheds. I don't understand that you have only washed your dog once in a year though that seems gross. My dog is washed about once a month or more in winter if he gets muddy.

Whippetlovely · 19/11/2024 19:21

Ow and the covers are washed everyweek. In an ideal world I wouldn't have him on the bed but when we had him neutered he cried all night I felt so bad so let him up and obviously after that didn't want to go back to sleeping on his own.

BO and dog are unclean scents so obviously I object to both of those. Why are you rationalising being smelly?!

Ytcsghisn · 19/11/2024 19:36

Having an animal in the bed with you is gross.

Of course they will have shit on their bodies, paws etc. they don’t walk around outside with shoes on. They don’t clean themselves after going to the toilet.

Threads like these re in force the adage, don’t eat from anyone’s house if you don’t know how they live. You just don’t know other people’s hygiene standards.

That’s one way to justify gross hygiene standards to yourself.
