I bathed her this morning for the first time in well over a year as she rolled in poop. This was the result… she sleeps under the duvet with us every night.. how am I not ill? 🥴

Surely you must just smell like dog all day long.

Mine sleeps on the bed. I don't smell of dog as, like most people, I take a shower when I get up.

Spidey66 · 20/11/2024 18:09

Oh and I've got a pretty strong immune system. Since we've got her I've had Covid once (relatively mildly) and a couple of very mild colds (ie last 2-3 days, never getting past the coughing sneezing stage. I used to get terrible colds lasting a couple of weeks and occasionally ending up in bronchitis-not since the dog.)

DungareesAndTrombones · 20/11/2024 18:10

My golden retriever sleeps on the bed but not under the covers, he'd be too warm. He is free heating I love it when he lays down the middle of me and DH!

Just told my big daft Goldie that's she's apparently gross and unhygienic, don't think she's arsed 🤷🏻‍♀️

What about parents, children, siblings, etc? Are they part of the family too?

no the bed isn’t that big! 😂

YeOldeGreyhound · 20/11/2024 20:03

Enjoy the company and warmth of your dog in bed with you, because one day they will be too old and poorly to join you, and it could just happen suddenly that you wished you really cherished that last time, even though you didn't know it was coming.
I am at the stage now, and my heart is breaking. I miss her warming my feet up, and making me sleep in odd positions.
The sneers at people who share their bed with their hounds is just nasty and unwarranted. It does not affect you at all. And no, my hair has never smelt of dog

Ah, who has been chopping onions in here

mollyfolk · 20/11/2024 23:56

I started out thinking that it was disgusting to sleep with dogs. Then our dog kept setting off our house alarm so we let him upstairs in a dog bed. They before we knew it he was snuggled up on a blanket on our bed!

It probably is dirty but we are all still alive anyway.

Cats fo have a rather distinct smell

Mine don't. Smell warm and fluffy

DevilledEgg · 21/11/2024 10:14

Well it appears the majority of mumsnetters are utter mingers. Enjoy your filth. I'm out 🤣

vodkaredbullgirl · 21/11/2024 10:24

Don't care what you think.

Strawberrypicnic · 21/11/2024 12:19

It's totally anyone's prerogative not to have a dog in their house or on their bed, I am a dog owner and he comes on the bed and I do admit it requires a bit of cognitive dissonance. (I think I'd be considered clean by most other standards, I change sheets once a week, we have a cleaner once a week, etc.) But I don't get the amount of people who seem to think that by not having a dog you're living in some kind of sterile, operating theatre-type environment. Life is dirty, humans are dirty, we 'shed' stuff too, even if we're washing every day! Bacteria exist and it's fine

Makingchocolatecake · 21/11/2024 13:06

I think it's OK if you bath them more, like 1 a week or fortnight

But that's incredibly bad for the dogs skin

I think this is just something you can’t understand unless you have a dog and love that dog. I know it’s not for all dog owners (we can’t due to my sleeping). But before I had a dog I would have thought eeewwww. Now I think - what a beautiful thing for both the dog and the owner.

I genuinely think the level of intimacy people now seek from pets is a sign of how sick and broken our (human) society has become.

Swivelhead · 21/11/2024 13:32

Why do you think so?

The human heart has an infinite capacity for love.

Loving and cherishing our pets companions does not make us love our fellow people any less. The cosiest, kindest people I know all love animals.

Absolutely no one believes this whether they are dog owner or not.

Everyone knows this, whether they are dog owners or not. Most people mitigate the potential unpleasantness by keeping themselves clean and avoid introducing unnecessary layers of yuck to their lives, like taking a smelly dog to bed.

I know quite a few dog owners. They range from fairly easy-going about housekeeping to scrupulously clean and excessively house-proud.

The thing they all have in common are homes that (to a greater or lesser extent) whiff of dogginess. Even the scrupulously clean ones. Dog owners might not notice it (or not mind it), but most non-dog owners find it very unpleasant.

leftfootinletfootout · 22/11/2024 06:41

Just woke up to the dog spooning my husband!

PreciousMahoney · 22/11/2024 09:25

Meh. I'm very clean. And if my house has a little doggy whiff which makes it unpleasant for folk who don't get why they add a wonderful addition to my already great life.....well I'm kinda glad if it puts those sort of folk coming to my home.

On a typical Sunday afternoon my four children, their partners, my grandchildren, my big daft lab and my one eyed cat all gather in my home to eat, and just chill.

Jesus. If you aren't an aminal lover that's fine but to spout shite psychobabble on here about folk and their love for their pets is so typically mumsnet 🤣

Don't have your dog on the bed. Have your dog on the bed. It's not that deep!

SummerFeverVenice · 23/11/2024 23:10

itsalwaysthesame · 18/11/2024 23:04

Nah it's fine, my dog is old, lumpy, smelly and hairy quite dirty too I guess as he hates a bath but his been in our bed for 15 years so can't turf him out now.

I do change my covers quite regularly though and haven't used white bedding for 15 years!

Brown sheets doth hide the skid marks.

Heartbreakanddamage · 23/11/2024 23:18

Mine hogs the bed every night, all 37kg of her. I wouldn't have it any other way

Me neither! Never trust a person who doesn’t like dogs. I have always used this as a yardstick and never been wrong yet.

I remember my wonderful mum once saying to an ex boyfriend “Andrew would you like another sandwich? The dog doesn’t want it”

Swivelhead · 26/11/2024 07:09

There's a definite correlation between dog people and people I'd trust my kids with.

An inverse correlation?!

Swivelhead · 26/11/2024 15:17

Nope. Dogs and little kids inspire the exact same feelings in me -- they're so trusting, inherently good-natured, funny, playful, honest, fearless, and ready for mayhem of all kinds. If you don't look into a dog's eyes and see the little soul sparkling back at you, there's something badly lacking in you.
