I’m so pleased your eldest spoke on the phone. I know it wasn’t nice the way he behaved before, but he’s influenced by a terribly misogynistic culture, as well as having a terrible role model in his father.

How incredible that you are showing him women can be strong and independent.

The weather needs to pack it in, because I’m meant to be going to London tomorrow, on the train.

Awww that sounds lovely @Apolloneuro , are you going for a break or just a day?
I just hope my eldest doesn’t turn out like his father it worries me xx

With you as his mum, I don’t think he will.

Going to London for the weekend, to visit family.

Good morning @RaspberryBeretxx , how are you today?
Awww your son sounds adorable I don’t blame him for not wanting to do pe especially in this weather.
I have a good tip for tea stains in mugs , you wet the cup so it’s damp inside , then coat the stain with baking powder probably about a teaspoon full. Leave for 10 mins . Fill cup quarter way with white vinegar and then was out . Wella…. Tea stains gone .
I actually got my plate tower second hand for £2 but Amazon do them if you search ‘corner plate tower’ xx

Another top tip - I'll try that, thank you! I actually have some baking soda that I used in home made deodorant. Brilliant on the plate tower, I'll take a look on amazon.

That's so lovely that you spoke to your DS last night. You're showing him that ultimately you'll end up better off from splitting with your ex which is an important lesson! I'm sure that when he gets older he'll be closer to you again and you'll have more influence. 19 is such a strange age in these times, their brains are still teenage and have a lot of maturing to do but they're adults in some ways.

So so happy for you with your cooker! Hope the throat eases off soon and that the warm tea is helping.

Hope the snow eases off for you @Apolloneuro and you get to London OK tomorrow.

Im just trying to read instructions for central heating so it can be timed to come on and off it’s giving me a headache 😂xx

Really pleased to see everything is going well in your lovely new house Laura.

Just adding my 2p about schools closing: I teach and left my house this morning at 7.30. It was raining hard but it's no big deal. 4 miles and 10 minutes up the road, there was heavy snow. It was quite dangerous. I have to go up 2 steep hills to get to school. I was dithering about carrying on when the local traffic news came on the radio and they said that a tree was down blocking one of the hills. I turned round and drove home very carefully. I rang my Head of Department who told me that all the school buses turned round, only 4 teachers made it in and the Head got stuck for 2 hours in all the gridlocked traffic. Head made the decision to shut at 8.15 and we switched to remote learning for the day.

I spoke to some of my students on Teams this afternoon and lots of them were stuck in buses for hours. Lots of cars went into ditches. If the roads were gritted, the rain washed the grit away so the roads were slippery and slushy. There have been lots of accidents and roads blocked either by trees or jack-knifed lorries.

Back in the day, when I lived in a large city, we went to school in the snow. In Devon where I am now, the kids come from miles around to school. Lots of roads are single-track and ungritted. Public transport is poor and safety of students and staff is the top priority. Sorry to derail Laura's lovely thread but I wanted to make people aware of the context. I probably worked harder in my freezing house than I do in my toasty classroom today!

Afternoon @RaspberryBeretxx , how’s your day been?
I’ve done my first hoover and mop today in my kitchen , who knew cleaning would be so exciting?😂
Ohhh how did you make homemade deodorant? My eldest has fractured his hand he said it was hurting and went to hospital today and they did a scan and now he’s got it in a pot so he can’t work for 4 weeks. He went out sat night and got into a fight. But guess what? He’s on his way to see me his girlfriend is fetching him as he can’t drive yet he said he needs a love so I’m really looking forward to them coming.
Throat is still really hurting I’m just having a hot water with lemon and honey xx

Oh I’m so excited for you that you get to see your biggest boy Laura @Imbluedalale . Sorry about his hand but that’s so sweet he still wants his mum 💕. He sounds like the trickiest one to get onside so if he is there’s really no stopping you 😁. I bet he will love the house!

I’m also so excited on your kitchen hoover and mop 😆! How is your new cooker?

Thats good you’re having lemon and honey for your throat - I hope that helps a little. If you can take ibuprofen they may help if it’s swollen up. When I had Covid they were the only thing that helped!

Hi @Malbecfan , I was going to ask how you are but it seems you’ve had a hectic day so I’ll send you a big hug instead. Watch out for it ❤️
Steep hills and snow is my worst nightmare , you did amazing to get as far as you did and I can imagine teaching from home is very very hard so you should be proud of yourself. I’ve turned my heating off for a while as worried about the bills I’ve never had a gas bill before as used bottled gas at old home xx

Hooray that your daughter is there and a Chinese for dinner sounds a perfect celebration of your new home 🎉 ❤️. 🤣 at the fluffy lampshade! I’m sure it’ll be ok. I think with the newer led bulbs they don’t get so hot 🤔?

Wow, your son’s x ray looks awful, so painful. No wonder it’s so sore, poor him 😞. I’m sorry you didn’t get to see him but sounds like you’re on much better terms anyway which is a big step.

hope you have a lovely evening! I’ve got a drive to get ds from his activity in a bit then hopefully a quick dinner and relax before bed. Your cleaning and washing enthusiasm must be catching as I changed my bedding today and even washed the mattress protector on a long hot wash (it looked horrible 😳, I’m hoping it’s just several tea spillages 🤣).

Evening @RaspberryBeretxx , how’s your evening going? Do you watch I’m a celeb?
daughter came and was lovely seeing her and then my big sister and her partner came which was lovely so ordered a Chinese which was amazing and tried new things on the menu. Sisters partner put me a lampshade up in kitchen , sorted my radiators out and sorted my heating which I’m chuffed about. He’s got his own business in property maintenance so he said anything I need doing just let him know . I’m writing my list as we speak 😂
Funny story about the Chinese , when it arrived they hadn’t put the 2 portions of rice in and I was fuming and spent about 5 mins muttering there’s no rice and everyone was saying to go on just eat and complain so I thought ‘right I will’ . When I was on there I checked the order and I didn’t order the rice! 😂I also didn’t mention that I didn’t order the rice which was naughty of me but regardless it was a lovely Chinese.
My son’s hand looks very painful doesn’t it , bless him. I think we are getting on better terms and I hope it continues . My sister and her partner said my house is lovely and a decent size and they loved the garden too.
Hope you managed to pick ds up and your all warm and safe snuggled at home.
Bet you feel so much better for having a clean fresh mattress protector I love fresh bedding there’s nothing better xx

Evening Laura and the Spoonies, sorry your son wasn’t able to come over to see you. His hand looks really painful and I hope it heals quickly. Lovely that your daughter came over with her bedroom stuff though and you were able to enjoy a Chinese with your sister and partner.
Glad you have enjoyed cleaning today. Hope you are staying warm in this cold weather? Sending a hug 🤗

Ruralretreating · 21/11/2024 22:16

Checking in quickly to say hi and that crafting pic made me well up @Imbluedalale . Glad you had a good discussion with safeguarding lead, sensible to build that relationship and it sounds as though you handled it really well.
Sorry not to have more time to chat, work very busy, but I am reading thread daily. Love to all the Spoonies.
Am just having a cuddle with my dog before I bake cakes for school event tomorrow and finish writing a report for work.

Ruralretreating · 21/11/2024 22:22

He just nabbed an oldish pink cauliflower as I opened fridge door 🙄

I’ve had a lovely evening thank you I’ve just washed all the Chinese pots and wiped down the kitchen and put a wash on so all sorted.
I am staying warm thank you , I’ve had a knitted jumper on today with pearls all over it that my mum gave me and I’ve been boiling all day and it has felt really heavy with all the pearls so couldn’t wait to take it off 😂
Ive got my support worker coming tomorrow which will be nice but that’s about it for tomorrow apart from sorting out water and sewerage and tv licence . Sending big hug xx

Hello Spoonies, SpoonCats and SpoonDogs! Heck it's cold - who went to the North pole and brought this weather home with them?! I had to deploy my long sleeved thermal top today, and the scarf!

I'm so glad things are going so well @Imbluedalale - sounds like you are having really good catch ups with your family! I'm sorry about ImblueSon1's hand though - OUCH!! I hope it heals quickly and doesn't hurt too much.

I love your scrapbook!!

As to what a spiralizer is, its a device that turns vegetables into thin strings so you can, well, I dunno really - eat stringy vegetables?! Ours doesn't get much [any!] use as I have no idea what I'm supposed to do with the end product. Let me find a picture....

OK, so this is like the one we have: 5.imimg.com/data5/SELLER/Default/2021/1/UN/PV/LL/114081401/8-500x500.jpg - what you can't see is the massive spike for impaling the vegetable on the left hand bit, and the sharp-ass blades on the right hand bit. No putting your hand unawares into a drawer where this beastie lives!

No pets here sadly, but lots of urban wildlife. The squirrels are looking particularly porky at the moment!

Hi @ChoccieCornflake , how are you today? It is nippy outside. I hope you’re managing to keep warm. I love a good scarf although I haven't got one at the moment but I have seen a nice one on tik tok shop for £5.95 , I’m scared to order it though incase it turns out to be a dolls scarf or something from wish!
Thank you so much @ChoccieCornflake , I am having good catch ups with my family and rebuilding relationships again. My sisters partner said something really lovely this evening and it really made me think that’s what real love is, caring about your other half. He said ‘your sister will be so pleased and relieved now she’s seen you looking as you are and with your lovely home’. The fact he felt relieved that my sister will now feel better and be relieved she’s seen me just made my heart warm.
So basically a spiralizer is to make vegetable spaghetti but also attacks humans?😂
Ive seen lots of squirrels here outside my kitchen window as there’s big trees across the road. I’ve got anxiety tonight as my bins haven't been delivered yet and they said to just put the black bags out front for the bin men and I have but I’m worried that in the morning all the contents of my bins will be strewn across the road . Not that I have any bad contents just Chinese cartons , biscuit wrappers , roses chocolate wrappers and several hundred sequins which dropped on the floor whilst doing my crafts yesterday and I couldn’t be bothered to pick them up so swept them straight into the bin 😂xx

😂😂😂 You nailed it, I don’t really sleep much, it’s very unhealthy. I gave up on doing the report tonight, will start early tomorrow instead!

Dog wasn’t at all convinced by the pink cauliflower and he’ll eat most things (computer power cables included, he was lucky he didn’t blow himself up yesterday, chewed through to the inside wires whilst it was plugged in 😱), so won’t buy that again as children weren’t keen either. To be fair that might be because eldest declared “What is that? It looks like brains” when I put it on the table 😂

Ruralretreating · 22/11/2024 00:27

P.S. So glad your eldest is being kinder

nornironlady · 22/11/2024 06:32

Good morning Spoonies! @Imbluedalale that was some mega Chinese last night. I actually shocked you had to order rice separately on top of price of meal 😮 the rice comes with the meal here! I'm really pleased you had your family around you and got lots of help in the house. Bonus! I got up to put heating on and bring the cat back to bed for a half hour. It's the right weather for staying at home and doing a bit of life admin. If any of you are up and out please take care and have a great Friday 🥰

Apolloneuro · 22/11/2024 06:55

Morning!

What a gorgeous woof woof @Ruralretreating

I love a Chinese takeaway. I can’t remember properly, but is this the sister that’s got your Christmas baubles? Might you be able to get them back, now your family have realised the truth? I hope so.

Trains seem to be running, so will be off to London in a couple of hours.

nornironlady · 22/11/2024 07:38

@Apolloneuro really glad to hear you are getting up to London as I seen there was more snow in the Devon area where I think you said you are. I'd love to visit that part of the UK, I bet it's beautiful. I took my son to London for a weekend last year and we had a brilliant time. I hope you have a great day 😀

However, every day, more than ever I wake up so grateful I have a home, warmth, nice food and a few good friends.
Have a lovely day @Imbluedalale hope your hair day is better than mine?! 😂
