Vibrators on sale at Tesco, thought it was a bit much

Went to buy some toothpaste with my kids, 7 year old wants to see new toy in plastic boxes, it’s rows and rows of vibrators. Is it just me or is this a bit much for the weekly shop?

Ahh yes and all the kids are pulling their phones out to scan random QR codes...

Otherwise, it is quite discreet. A quick glance doesn't scream "sex toy" and the picture is the same colours as the background, making it blend

That's your definition of discrete? 😳

SockWithSmallTear · 28/10/2024 20:00

They also sell pregnancy testing kits, baby clothes, baby formula, encouraging young children to normalise the concept ( sorry) that people walking around in Tescos have had sex and got pregnant ! Though maybe if they promoted the condom aisle more they wouldn’t have to sell the end products of normalising sex around children

---->>>

That's one hell of analogy.

Chidlren see pregnant women so exposing them to inappropriate sexual aids is ok? Clearly not. My kids have seen me pregnant, yet I still put my toys away.

Most people don't look at pregnant women and immediately think sex either.

Needmorelego · 28/10/2024 20:01

@BalletCat that's discrete enough for anyone under the age of about 12.
Under 12's won't know what it is. If they ask it's "I have no idea" or "It's for adults".
Over 12s - will mostly be "urrgh gross" or "omg embarrassing".

SockWithSmallTear · 28/10/2024 20:02

...Let alone looking at "baby clothes" at thinking sex - fucking hell...

CostelloJones · 28/10/2024 20:04

There’s anal bleaching kits for sale at my local Tesco.

Edited

Are they on offer with club card? Asking for a friend 😂

BalletCat · 28/10/2024 19:50

Yes.

Fairly subtle picture, the name quite small, picture on a similar coloured backing so it's not obvious, quite possibly even a drawing and not a photo...

Putting it in a completely blank box would make it stand out more, rather than this which looks not too dissimilar to a condom box or something you wouldn't look twice at

Needmorelego · 28/10/2024 20:06

@SockWithSmallTear I remember being about 13/14 and me and my friends would look at baby clothes and be all "Awww..... aren't they cute? I can't wait to have a baby" but then one of us would remember that we'd have to have sex with a boy ("eww gross") to get a baby.
So you could say that baby clothes do scream "sex" 😂😂😂😂

At 13, I get it in a way... sex is new and scary.

But blimey - any adult who looks at baby clothes and thinks of sex (or that it's comparable to a sex toy) needs to reflect. That's all I'm gonna say.

Needmorelego · 28/10/2024 20:25

@SockWithSmallTear yes but this thread isn't about adults seeing sex toys and baby clothes.
It's about children who might see them (and probably aren't even interested).

Mxflamingnoravera · 28/10/2024 20:29

@justasking111 are we sisters? That was my mother's favourite thing to do while I was at work on a Saturday morning. I learned sex was bad, I was a slut, I was disgusting. I learned to lie and deceive her and ended up pregnant at 16 because I was too scared to get hold of contraception. Worse, I was so scared, I hid the pregnancy until I was 7 months (even from a doctor).

Be careful what you teach your daughters.

I'm 62 now and thrilled (literally) to see vibrators and clit suckers in Tesco. I might take my mum out of her care home to Tesco to show her what she's missing!

Completelyjo · 28/10/2024 20:35

BalletCat · 28/10/2024 19:41

This is not discrete. It also offers a demonstration if you scan the QR code which debunks the "it's not like demonstrations are being given in the aisle" argument.

Are you suggesting that packaging is inappropriate?
It’s obviously going to state what the product is otherwise how would it be sold but it’s hardly graphic.

There's nothing wrong with the packaging form a marketing point of view, I don't think it's discreet enough for sale in a general store.

Deep & deeper
Butt plug set - on your game
Scan me to see me at play
Neon lights around it

Are hardly discreet. As you say all it needs to state is what the product is. A plain box with an outline that an adult would clearly recognise as a butt plug and butt plug in reasonably sized writing would suffice.

Or you can keep this things for sex stores and have the packaging wild as you like because it won't matter?

I guess if I could pick I’d probably put condoms behind the pharmacy counter too, I get that people may want to buy these items it’s just that as a parent I want to choose when my kids hear about these things rather than just get exposed to them.

Honestly my boys have never ever ever noticed any of these things. One, we don’t spend an inordinate amount of time perusing the toothpaste/condom/vitamin aisle; two, kids find shopping immensely boring and are more likely to be messing about than browsing; three, kids really don’t analyse boring products to the extent of reading the blurb and all these things look fairly innocuous at a glance, and 4, honestly who cares. Questions can be answered carefully in an age-appropriate way. There are way bigger things to worry about.

Failing all those - online shopping.

BalletCat · 28/10/2024 20:52

This is discreet

Yes all the line drawings of butts in high contrast white on black are more discrete than the other box

I'd actually stop and look at this box to see what it was, especially as it looks different to condom etc boxes whereas the Durex box blends in to what would be around it

Delphiniumandlupins · 28/10/2024 21:16

valentinka31 · 28/10/2024 06:01

absolutely your prerogative, and mine too.

I was abused by ‘D’P with one of these machines, so I guess that’s why I’m not keen. I used to think I was somehow not a good ‘adult woman’ for not wanting it. But then I told myself it’s ok, being allowed to be yourself sexually also means being allowed to prefer all natural sex.

So I suppose my resistance to supermarket vibrators might be that I feel it reinforces the message that if we don’t like them, we are prudes/repressed. Which I so am not. I’m just ok with nature.

I'm sorry that happened to you and no wonder it has shaped your opinion.

Magnastorm · 28/10/2024 21:33

BalletCat · 28/10/2024 18:13

What exactly is your problem?

You were doing this with people pages back. Piling on the people disagreeing with you with some ridiculous ideas. Do you just not like it when the numbers are the other way around?

Grow up.

My problem was the previous 20 posts by you and others using phrases like "good job the adults are posting" because you can't grasp or accept the idea that some people actually don't agree that a few vibrators on sale in Tesco is much of a big deal, and that some people think that there are other products "for adults" that actually cause far more harm in society than a £5 sex toy.

Disagreeing with someone is not "pilling on", either, on a discussion board. If you don't like other opinions, the internet is not for you.

Think you should take your own advice to grow up, frankly.

I think it would stand out to you more, but I think the colorfull box with the word "play" and "game" on it might be more likely to attract a child's interest.

XenoBitch · 28/10/2024 21:48

Nothing wring with it. It is down to you as a parent to deal with this, not shops.
My Tesco has a shelf of sex toys too, but they are not massive rubber fists and and 10 inch realistic cocks. They are pretty subtle ones.. even the ones for men.

What bothers me more, is waiting at the pharmacy for my meds and there is a big display on the counter about Viagra... I don't know where to look! I feel like people will look at me catching a glance and think my DP needs it (he actually does anyway).

It's hardly the same thing.

And a child is very unlikely going to be scanning the qr code - as 1) shouldn't have a phone that has that capability at a young age and 2) the parent should be parenting them in the shop so that wouldn't happen.

Numerous different posters all having a go at one or two people talking sense with ridiculous comments like "baby clothes shouldn't be on show if you don't like sex toys on show then because sex makes babies!" is both a pile on, and stupid. By page 4 of the insistence that condoms are the same as vibrators and baby clothes it was obvious it waste of time trying to have a serious conversation.

Then some people with sense came along and we resumed normal discussion 😊

I can absolutely grasp that people don't think there's a problem with sex toys being displayed on Tesco. I absolutely do not believe for second that people can't see the difference between health products/contraceptives and baby clothes and are not just winding people up.

On a high up shelf, out of the direct eyeline of children and down an aisle that is "boringly grown up" as the medicine aisle is...

A link to a demonstration of using a butt plug? Really?? 🙈

I checked out the link and it really isn't a demonstration, thankfully! It's quite a vague video ad.
