Vibrators on sale at Tesco, thought it was a bit much

Went to buy some toothpaste with my kids, 7 year old wants to see new toy in plastic boxes, it’s rows and rows of vibrators. Is it just me or is this a bit much for the weekly shop?

? Where did I say that?! 😂😂

and slightly though my point… some women orgasm by natural means

Some people wash their clothes by natural means, most of us with access to one prefer an electric machine.

absolutely your prerogative, and mine too.

I was abused by ‘D’P with one of these machines, so I guess that’s why I’m not keen. I used to think I was somehow not a good ‘adult woman’ for not wanting it. But then I told myself it’s ok, being allowed to be yourself sexually also means being allowed to prefer all natural sex.

So I suppose my resistance to supermarket vibrators might be that I feel it reinforces the message that if we don’t like them, we are prudes/repressed. Which I so am not. I’m just ok with nature.

Actually it’s been shown time and time again that a great many women don’t orgasm at all and certainly not from P in V sex.

You aren’t forced to go into Tesco for milk and come out with a vibrator.

Its a choice to buy it just like every other item they stock.

valentinka31 · 28/10/2024 08:15

Well if a woman can orgasm by the friction and pressure effect of her clitoris being rubbed by a vibrator, then I’m pretty sure she can by it being rubbed by fingers. What she can’t do with just fingers is have a deep vaginal orgasm.

So I think using a vibrator is about ease of achieving clitoral orgasm and about type and intensity of orgasm. And nobody I think has even dared mention that frequent use of high/variable mechanical vibration can mean that women who could previously reach orgasm fine with fingers/tongue/situation etc then find that not stimulating enough and become reliant on a vibrator. It makes them even less likely to orgasm without and perpetuates the idea that they can’t.

"I don't have an issue with sex toys"
But goes to great lengths to try and shame women who use them

Some of us get to enjoy orgasms with vibrators and also deep penetrative orgasms through either PIV or other means. It's not all or one. I do agree with what you're saying in that you can get used to a vibrator so much that manual stimulation of the clitoris might not be effective enough, but I've found taking a break for a while fixes this. And what you have to realise is that the subject of masturbation is personal and people will get themselves off in the way that they like and it has no effect on you whatsoever.

I agree, it’s definitely disappointing that there is no discretion and that nothing is personal. Adds to the jaded quality of modern life.
horrible and mundane.

Bit extreme, no?

A truly bizzare comment on the subject of Tesco stocking vibrators.

Everyone has clearly moved on from Tesco stocking vibrators and has started piling on @valentinka31 for apparently having a personal problem with women being allowed to have vibrators or orgasm at all. Which is clearly not true posters are just poking at her to make their point. Keep up.

harveyGaskellsMoll · 28/10/2024 09:50

How tall are your kids (to the people who are worried their kids are going to start asking awkward questions?)

I’m 4’10 and had no idea these were on sale till a friend pointed them out in Tesco and I had to actively look up 😂. I’m glad I’ve never needed to purchase one in store (thank god for online shopping!) or I’d have to have a very awkward conversation asking a staff member to get one down for me.

If you do have sex toys at home with kids then can I suggest you hide them well or come up with a very boring euphemism for them?
My mum waited until I was an adult to tell me that as a child I took her “personal massager for a bad back” to show and tell at school. Apparently my teacher had been in a horse riding accident that left her with a back injury, she was a bit bemused when I offered to give her a massage with my mums vibrater!

Luckily it was the early 90’s so it was fairly discreet and didn’t look like a fake brightly coloured penis but my mum still said that she and my dad talked about moving away after this. My teacher apparently commented on what a caring child it made me then asked about where one might buy such a thing?!

I don’t really see what the issue is about selling them in supermarkets when a literal adult struggles to spot one, they aren’t at eye level and most kids are more bothered about getting a toy or sweets. Like plenty of people have said, if a kid does show interest then just redirect them. There are plenty of things young children notice for the first time, especially as stock changes seasonally. A child is far more likely to comment on Easter eggs, selection boxes or teddies with hearts on for Valentine’s Day than anything else.

The same poster has been on various other threads going on about the same thing. If they have a personal thing about vibrators, surely the best course of action is to just not buy one and be accepting of the fact that other people like them?

People don't have to not buy a vibrator because she doesn't like them, she's not telling people they can't buy them so what's the problem?

Hom many threads are currently discussing vibrator use? I wouldn't have thought it was a widespread issue?

Either way, the conversation is definitely not about Tesco anymore so to claim it is silly.

IKEAJesus · 28/10/2024 10:06

She’s objecting to them being “normalised”. Which, if she got her own way, would take away choice / introduce shame for women who choose to use them. I agree it’s a different issue to whether they should be sold in Tesco, but let’s not go back to the 1950s.

TakemedowntoPotatoCity · 28/10/2024 10:12

I thought of buying one, but they were security tagged. When I scanned it the scanner told me to alert a member of staff to remove the tag at checkout.

Needless to say, I left it. Hardly a discreet purchase!

SerendipityJane · 28/10/2024 10:15

Meanwhile, in a parallel universe there is a thread about Ann Summers selling bread, milk and frozen pizzas.

Needmorelego · 28/10/2024 10:17

@TakemedowntoPotatoCity why does it need to be discreet though? The staff don't care what you buy.

Mumwithbaggage · 28/10/2024 10:23

Just flipped over to MN after doing my online Tesco shop. How exciting! Do you think if I click and collect it'll come in a paper bag like the parsnips or will it be casually tossed in the plastic crate with the tins of coconut milk?

HollyKnight · 28/10/2024 10:57

@Mumwithbaggage

If your Tesco is anything like my Tesco they'll probably substitute it with a cauliflower.

Maybe you are more confident than me, but showing a bullet vibrator to a possible 20 year old male college student manning the self scanners is a step too far for my shy self.

Boiledbeetle · 27/10/2024 17:40

I'm just wondering if you order one on your online shopping and they are out of stock whether you get Gary from the warehouse as your substitute!

All this nonsense about "It's a family store"...give the fuck over.

Firstly, the world does not revolve around children. And secondly, supermarkets are full of things that are not remotely suitable for children - knives, medication, laundry tablets that are coloured like sweets, caustic chemicals, even the choking hazard that is grapes. Be a parent and keep your kids away from stuff that's not meant for them.
