To ask if you'd go to hospital and get yourself checked out?

I just fell and rolled my ankle, it feels like it was pretty bad but I'm not home to check yet.

I've grazed my knee and that's bleeding pretty badly but I'm mostly worried about my ankle, I can feel it swelling and it's so painful to bear weight on, but I can walk (slowly and painfully).

I tripped on an uneven paving slab which is why I want to go and get checked out, because I'm aware I could've done something quite serious. Is it OTT of me to go in the morning? I know it's not an a&e right now type of thing but I can also feel that something isn't quite right

I wouldn’t go to A&E no, minor injuries unit and urgent care would be more appropriate, hope it gets better soon!

Notmanyleftnow · 14/10/2024 18:16

It's not OTT, and it wouldn't be OTT to go to A and E either.

BananaGrapeMelon · 14/10/2024 18:16

I use RICE - rest ice compression elevation - for a sprained ankle.

coffeesaveslives · 14/10/2024 18:17

That's what A&E is for IMO - accidents. Go and get looked at tonight if you can, there's no benefit in waiting.

Going to ice it when I get home, we've got no bandages in to compress though 🥲

It really doesn't feel like an a&e matter but I also felt like I was about to pass out when I did it, I couldn't walk or talk (definitely didn't bang my head though, I'm sure of that, it was just the pain!)

Unless you think it's broken I would wait til the morning and go to a minor injuries/urgent care as it may be badly sprained and you might need some treatment

Luddite26 · 14/10/2024 18:19

Accident and Emergency is the name and it sounds like you have had an accident better to get it checked out if you really feel like it's not right. I would get some ibuprofen and paracetamol if you can and go.

TimTamTime · 14/10/2024 18:20

You're weight bearing and have a grazed knee. Why on earth do you need urgent medical attention? Clean the knee, ice pack and elevate the ankle and take some painkillers. For the sake of your own sanity do not go to ED on a Saturday night.

It's a Monday...

I'm thinking MIU before work but I don't want to be a baby! But my god it hurts

It's Monday for starters - and she says she's incredibly painful to put weight on - of course she should go and get it looked at. Walking around on a broken ankle will only make it worse.

Purplebunnie · 14/10/2024 18:24

Whichever route you go down please, please make sure you get physio for the ankle afterwards. Sprains are always dismissed (yeah I've done it and regret it now) and they can cause problems later on

QuestionableMouse · 14/10/2024 18:24

Yes you should. I did similar, walked on it for almost two weeks then went for an x-ray when I couldn't sleep because it was so painful.

I had a fracture and it needed treatment.

olderbutwiser · 14/10/2024 18:25

There’s weight bearing and weight bearing - my hard-as-nails BIL recently walked on his broken hip. MIL insisted she could weight bear, by which she meant hobble and hop using furniture and FILs crutches.

If you have a MI I’d go tonight; if A&E I’d go tomorrow if it’s not improved. That’s my personal take.

Phonicshaskilledmeoff · 14/10/2024 18:25

No thanks to sitting in an and e with a sprained ankle. Think I’d wait it out with ice and elevation and only go if it got much worse personally, and even then a minor injurys centre. Ring 111 first and you may get a ‘walk’ in appointment

Ratfinkstinkypink · 14/10/2024 18:25

Being able to weight bear does NOT mean it isn't broken. With the level of pain you describe I don't think it would be unreasonable to seek a medical opinion.

Go to minor injuries. I wish I had gone sooner, because I'm still having issues over a year later.

name0284629505 · 14/10/2024 18:29

As above, can you search for minor injuries near you on the nhs website? If you put your symptoms in, they will tell you to go to a minor injuries unit tonight. They usually have x-ray, although ours doesn't work out if hours they give you an appointment to come back the next day. It doesn't matter where you are just put the postcode in for where you are now. Depending on the unit you might be able to make an appointment so you don't have to hang around too long. If you go before work tomorrow you'll need the morning off probably it's usually a few hours wait. Hope it feels better soon. Also, they will give you simple pain killers, if you have some take some now. They sooner they are in the sooner they work!!

I know people that have treated a very painful injury as a sprain and further down the line actually had a untreated fracture.

You know your own body if it’s really painful, swollen and you feel something is wrong. It’s what a&e is for. Be prepared for a long old wait, take snacks a drink, charger etc.

You may get luckily if the minor injuries side is quieter but always better to be prepared. Mornings aren’t always as quiet as you think these days, lots still waiting from overnight.

itwasnevermine · 14/10/2024 18:32

We don't have an MI, my mum is going to take me to the hospital in the morning, all I want is a cup of tea and my pyjamas!! The shock of it has knocked me sick a bit and I just don't have the energy to sit in a hospital overnight

OP posts:
Bunnycat101 · 14/10/2024 18:43

Echo the comments to see if you have a minor injuries unit. Last time we took a child the wait was super quick and we were in and out in less than 30 minutes with an onward referral to the fracture clinic. We’d have been at our major a&e for much longer. It was a much nicer experience.

Bunnycat101 · 14/10/2024 18:45

Sorry cross posted- if you don’t have a standalone minor injury unit near you your a&e probably will have its own minors unit. Don’t be put off seeking medical care. It might be worth calling 111 though as they might be able to book you an appointment to save the long wait.

HectorPlasm · 14/10/2024 18:46

Pleasectell us you've taken the boot / shoe off! It may swell a lot more. I turned my ankle in hole - agony. I genuinely thought I'd snapped it. I had in fact severely sprained it and it was crook for about 8 weeks.

itwasnevermine · 14/10/2024 18:48

Show is off now I'm and I'm going to monitor it for the next few hours, there's some swelling and bruising already so it's definitely a morning in a&e for me

OP posts:
curious79 · 14/10/2024 18:48

A rolled ankle is desperately painful. They can swell hugely and bruise very badly. But it is a minor injuries unit thing. I feel for you! You can heal from a broken ankle sometimes more quickly than a roll as you aren't given crutches or anything
