To ask if you'd go to hospital and get yourself checked out?

I just fell and rolled my ankle, it feels like it was pretty bad but I'm not home to check yet.

I've grazed my knee and that's bleeding pretty badly but I'm mostly worried about my ankle, I can feel it swelling and it's so painful to bear weight on, but I can walk (slowly and painfully).

I tripped on an uneven paving slab which is why I want to go and get checked out, because I'm aware I could've done something quite serious. Is it OTT of me to go in the morning? I know it's not an a&e right now type of thing but I can also feel that something isn't quite right

And RICE is spot on. The more care you take now, the quicker it will recover and the better the fix

itwasnevermine · 14/10/2024 18:50

God this is AGONY! The bruising is mainly following something on the side of my leg (I'm assuming a tendon or ligament) about a quarter of the way up my calf. I think the adrenaline has worn off now. Going to get my knee dressed for the scrape and go from there

I fell really badly over the summer. Really thought my ankle was broken. But actually by the following morning it was vastly better - still hurt and still took ages to heal, but it was obvious that it wasn’t broken. So personally I think having a plan to get checked out first thing tomorrow is a good idea.

Waffle19 · 14/10/2024 18:55

Personally I would rest it, ice it and elevate it first. Take some ibuprofen regularly. Then if no better in the morning or gets worse over night I’d seek medical help.

TimTamTime · 14/10/2024 18:20

You're weight bearing and have a grazed knee. Why on earth do you need urgent medical attention? Clean the knee, ice pack and elevate the ankle and take some painkillers. For the sake of your own sanity do not go to ED on a Saturday night.

I was weight bearing on my ankle after my sporting injury. I went on to finish the game. A subsequent a&e visit showed a displaced fracture that needed surgery. Don't underestimate Adrenalin.

itwasnevermine · 14/10/2024 19:04

There's a pretty sizeable egg on the side of my foot/ankle so I'm guessing ankle boots are off the menu for a while 🥲 my toes keep feeling funny but I'm not sure if that's just me panicking

Im worried because I've sprained this ankle a couple of times, badly, and my Achilles tendon is weak because of that

If it can wait until tomorrow I'd be wondering what the issue is. Clearly you need it looked at now. Comvenience doesn't come into it surely.

Differentstarts · 14/10/2024 19:08

I don't know if it's different in different areas but where I live if you go through the gp they can refer straight to xray and you just go whenever and it's in and out within 10 minutes rather then the 12+ hrs in a&e

mumda · 14/10/2024 19:09

Ring 111. They'll triage you and send you to the most appropriate place

WiddlinDiddlin · 14/10/2024 19:09

I would rest, ice, elevate etc and then go in the morning.

Sprain is likely, but a break or torn tendons also very possible (I've done all these things, multiple times thanks to the joys of Ehlers Danlos... ).

Swelling and damaged nerve endings can cause all sorts of weird sensations, I would not try to over analyse that, BUT... if you find your toes/foot are icey cold, numb, no cap refill, go sooner, as that would suggest the circulation is badly compromised and thats much more urgent than a simple break or torn tendon.

Am805463 · 14/10/2024 19:11

I’d go to get it checked personally.

I'd have to drive myself over, it's dark and I'm in so much pain I don’t know if I can drive

Ring your gp at 8am and see if they can refer straight to xray then get a taxi

WinterisComing95 · 14/10/2024 18:15

I wouldn’t go to A&E no, minor injuries unit and urgent care would be more appropriate, hope it gets better soon!

I always find these thread - and these replies specifically - interesting to see how it’s obviously different in different places.

we don’t have an out of hours GP, minor injuries or urgent treatment centre where we live. You have to do all through A&E and then get redirected, it’s the only option. You can be directed to one of these from A&E but you can’t book or walk in, you have to go to A&E to be triaged first.

itwasnevermine · 14/10/2024 19:21

@Differentstarts I will do

@SandandSky we're the same, even the hospital is half an hour away. They closed our MIU a while ago, the nearest one is now 45 minutes away

Yes I would ring 111 and get their advice.
I turned my ankle a few years back and a big egg came up on the top of my foot (similar to your desription) and I had torn the ligaments in my foot it took about 2 weeks to heal. Equally you could have broken your ankle a friend of mine was out for the day fell off the pavement and turned her ankle over, she carried on hobbling round town for a day eventually decided to go to a and e in the evening and she had broken her ankle quite badly needed an operation to have it pinned.
I would certainly get it checked, an untreated break can cause loads of problems (I broke my wrist last year and the hospital didn't pick up the break on first x ray, I've had no end of problems with it since)

Some posters on here think they are the guardians of a and e and that people must be prevented from going at all costs, it is absolutely insane.

Taxi? A friend? A neighbour? That much pain means you could have done serious damage and waiting 12+ hours more could cause issues. Others have said they wish they done something sooner.

MigGril · 14/10/2024 19:30

Sounds like you definitely need to get your mum to take you to a&e in the morning for an x-ray. I wouldn't try and drive onnit if your on your own. I've know two people who have broken ankles just by going over on them like this, it seems to be easily done. One also walk around on it for two weeks before getting it properly looked at as she thought it was just a sprain. It took so long to heal after as she had done more damage to it.

I think it's always worth getting it checked out as you can't tell if it's broken.

I'm also always interested to see what provision others have, we have no MIU here either. It's a&e or the GP nothing else.

jessycake · 14/10/2024 19:30

If you develop pins and needles it needs looking at tonight

FactsNotFeelings · 14/10/2024 19:31

I did this last week and it hurt soooooo bad

still not right but a compression thingy from Amazon helped a lot - it arrived the next day.

NippyCrab · 14/10/2024 19:33

@itwasnevermine definitely go and get it x rayed, continuing to use it will cause more damage whatever the injury is, it's best to know so you have the correct care plan in place. X

itwasnevermine · 14/10/2024 19:33

Think I'll get a GP's appointment in about six weeks! Definitely off to a&e because now I've sat down the pain is unbelievable. Hoping the morning will be quieter than it is now

You won't need an actual appointment just call and explain

Bestyearever2024 · 14/10/2024 19:35

Do you have anything stronger than paracetamol? 🥰

mindutopia · 14/10/2024 19:37

No, I wouldn’t. If you can walk on it, it’s very likely not broken. Give it til tomorrow or the next day, rest, ice and see how you feel. Then go to a minor injuries unit, if necessary, one with an x-ray, not A&E.
